    I purchased a Nokia 6101 with T-Mobile prepaid service.

I am having a problem with the volume of the earpiece--I can hardly hear the person I am trying to speak with. There is a very small volume control button on the phone that can be pushed during a call to adjust the volume. Most of the time it doesn't really help and it isn't a permanent solution--i.e. the volume (if it has changed at all) reverts back to the same pathetic level for the next call.

I don't think the problem is reception, since there is a strong signal here for T-Mobile service.

Has anyone else had this problem with the Nokia 6101 or similar models?

    Would appreciate any suggestions.

Bring the phone to T-Mobile and have it checked out.

I have had a Nokia 6101 since this past summer and have not had any issues with mine, it's a great phone.

    Edward, thanks for your reply.

I did take my phone to T-Mobile. Coincidentally, when the guy checked it in the store, the volume was better. (Kind of like the mysterious noise in a car that temporarily disappears when you take it to the mechanic.) Anyway, I had read that the 6101 has an "automatic volume control" feature that can be set so that the volume adjusts itself according to external noise levels. I asked the T-Mobile guy about it and he had never heard of that feature! However, he did locate it on my phone. It was turned off. He was skeptical about its benefit and suggested leaving it turned off.

A question: Do you have the "automatic volume control" turned on for your phone?

That is news to me, I didn't know it had an automatic volume control. I just noticed it on the Call settings menu. By default, it is turned off, so I have not been using it all this time.

I don't think it is listed in the manual, but like most nokias, you can raise the volume by pressing the right soft-key while you are actually in a call. That volume level should stay the same, in subsequent calls.

The volume control on the Nokia 6101 is a small rocker switch on the left side of the phone. The volume can be raised or lowered anytime, whether or not a call is in progress.

Just a note about the volume control switch on the left side of the phone: The rep at T-Mobile told me that you do have to have an active call to use it. However, I don't know if he is real knowledgeable since he knew nothing about the other volume control function (automatic volume control).

Another note: Against the advice of the T-Mobile guy, I turned on the Automatic Volume Control, which is accessed in the Menu >Settings>Call Settings. Right away I noticed a significant improvement in the volume.

Anyway, I know that others on this forum said that they weren't having a noticeable problem with the volume on their 6101 phones. So probably it isn't worth the trouble for them to turn on the Auto. Volume Control. But if anyone else IS having trouble, give this option a try.

Yes, I read about the volume buttons. I believe it was on some PhoneScoop reviews, that said using the softkey buttons (undocumented) worked better (louder) than the actual volume buttons.
