I was just checking the sprintpcs.com web site and was surprised to see that both the 4900 and 6400 "Candy-bar" phones are no longer offered by Sprint. Discontinuing the 6400 was no surprise... They recently had them on sale for $49.00 to blow out the remaining inventory. I looked on the sanyo.com website and did not see any new phones on the horizon. Flip phones are OK, but I really prefer a "Candy-bar" phone; They're easier for me to operate while driving. Also, some of my clients (Big Aerospace Defense contractors) do not allow camera phones. Has anybody heard about more new Sanyo "Candy-bar" phones? Only the Hitachi is currently offered in that configuration. --Mark
Here are the new Sanyo phones that are coming out that do not have a built in cameras: SCP-5400 - Flip Phone SCP-7200 - Candy-Bar They also feature PTT (Push to Talk).
Thanks Infinity, I wonder if PTT will push Nextel "Out of the Sanbox." A lot of my buddies who have Nextel just hate it. --Mark
As great as it is to see the PTT phones that may be coming out for sprint in the second half of this year, what is going to be the actual date when they are set to release the service. I think after Verizon released it's new PTT service last month, it has really opened up the eyes of consumers to this functionality as a valuable asset to the business world. Heck, I would also get all my sprint friends on board with it and then it would be great! Also, wouldn't it be nice if we were able to go inter-carrier with the PTT. That way people on Sprint, Verizon and Nextel could all talk together! I understand that this may not ever be a possibility because of compatibility issues, but It would be very neat!
Both the 6400 and 4900 are still available from Sprint. You just have to know where to look: Sanyo 6400 ($129.99) Sanyo 4900 (2 for $79.99) - sheureka
The 7200 is kind of ugly. It looks like the kind of outdoor walkie-talkies outdoorsmen use. Can't anyone come up with a PTT phone which doesn't look like a walkie-talkie?
Don't worry kids, the 4900 will be back. You don't think Sprint would take away one of its all-time best sellers after less than a year do you??
Of course they would, they do it all the time. Too many new phones will hit the market. I wouldnt hold my breath waiting for the return of this phone.
You're right, there are too many new phones coming out for Sprint to backtrack, even though the 4900 is a great phone. If what seems to be planned in the near future comes true, the camera phones we have today will soon be considered outdated relics, replaced by phones with streaming video with sound as well as the "quaint" picture taking ability. It's amazing to me how quickly a phone like the 4900, which was considered groundbreaking in the US at the time, has become simply passe. Ready link will be the next big thing to come out, but I see that Samsung is already coming out with a phone for the US that will take video clips. I'm sure used 4900's will be around for quite some time, as I still have people calling in and activating StarTac phones! The good ones stay around for a long time, which is a good thing for the many people who really could care less about accessing the internet or taking pictures with their wireless phone, all they care about is being able to place and receive voice calls. Besides, the 7200 is really an updated version of the 4900, just as the 4900 was an updated version of the 4700, which was an updated version of the 4500, etc., etc.
Also, wouldn't it be nice if we were able to go inter-carrier with the PTT. That way people on Sprint, Verizon and Nextel could all talk together! I understand that this may not ever be a possibility because of compatibility issues, but It would be very neat! I can see it with Verizon and Sprint but not Nextel. VZW and SPCS use VoIP technology that uses the internet to carry your voice over protocol, unlike Nextel who uses a Radio repeater service, besides, why would we want to talk to any Nextel user? ^_^
Good Call....I would love to see the intercarrier operability with the PTT services. I think it may be a bit ou to reach, or financially inreasonable. Think about the fact that the don't let you use the pcs-pcs or mobile-mobile minutes with other carriers.
Maybe it's just me, but I can't get behind all the hype regarding PTT. PCS2PCS is great and fits my needs; but someone please tell me, what is the advantage of PTT or RL if the person you're trying to contact doesn't even have that type of phone?
some one please help im dsperate! i have a 6400 and a serial cable that i bought from radio shack. my laptop is old and does NOT have a usb port so i have to try and use the serial. i want to use the phone as a wireless modem to surf the internet. I have sprint vision and i downloaded some "sprint connection manager" from sprints website. What else do I need to make this work? When I connect the phone to the laptop, the computer does not recognize it at all. it doesnt do anything. Please help! thanks
copy/paste First off you need a better computer with a USB port unless youre a good hacker and can figure out AT commands for your phone. else you need to somehow find the drivers for the cable and phone which i dont think are available. I'm assuming you have Radioshacks cable part # 17-776 which I also have, and there was a software out there (which I also have) that lets you download MIDI tones and pictures into your phone, but not to use it as a wireless modem connection.... I dont know what to tell you. youre last resource is to buy a new computer. and no you dont need snap dialer #777 is the number you set your Dialing program to dial to make a connection between your computer and the cell phone providers network.
Exactly. Don't even try to mess around with that old laptop. Sorry! It's so simple using the standard drivers and the newer pcs connection 2.0 software from sprint...it's all automatic.
When did the new pcs connection manager come out, and what are the improvements? The one I downloaded five months ago is dated 8/2/2002.
