    So I recently purchased the Samsung SCH U340 (Snap) From my local Alltel store. I thought it was a great deal, and I love the phone.

    The thing is though, when I want to download a ringtone from the Realtone Jukebox, or the Axess Shop, I get a message something similar to "Error: Network Down (504)". I went back to the store, because I was having problems with my voice mail in the first place, so I thought it would be a good chance to ask that as well. She told me that downloading ringtones, wallpapers, etc. were considered "Data" and off limits to prepaid costumers. I really hope that isn't the case, because all the preloaded ringtones on this phone suck. Was she right? Am I really stuck with these crappy ringtones? I hope not. Any help you have would be greatly appreciated.

    P.S. I also asked if I could send and recive picture messages, and she said no. I thought I could, but it was for like 25 cents a message. My friend tried sending me one, and I couldn't see it. It said in a text message to follow the link on my phone, but that would mean I would have to go on the browser thing, and I can't do that. :|

    Is it my phone? I don't know. I'm on the pay per day plan, if that has anything to do with it.

    P.P.S. Sorry for the long read.

    Alltel U Prepaid Pay Per Day

    From the Alltel website.

    A wireless prepaid plan that puts U in charge.

    Customize it to fit your needs:

    * UNLIMITED Mobile-to-Mobile
    * UNLIMITED Favorite Number Calling
    * UNLIMITED Night & Weekend Minutes
    * UNLIMITED Text Messaging

    Choose 2 Features — $0.75

    Choose 3 Features — $1.00

    Choose 4 Features — $1.25
    What does this plan include?

    * Anytime Minutes — 10¢ per minute
    * Text Messaging — 10¢ per message
    * Picture Messaging — 25¢ per message (handset dependent)
    * Nationwide Roaming — 59¢ per minute (see calling area)

    Any unlimited feature that is not chosen as a part of your daily package will be a pay-per-use charge of 10¢ per minute or message.

    How often do I need to add money to my account?

    The choice is yours. A recommended replenishment to get this plan started is $40. This will cover your daily charges and any additional service U may want to use, such as airtime, messaging, and downloadable ringtones and games.

    To keep your service active, you just need to have money on your account. Once your account reaches $0.00, your service will be “on hold” until your next replenishment.

    I'm not sure if anything has changed recently, but the alltelu website does indeed clearly show picture messages at 25 cents/message if the handset is capable. I have no problems accessing data and ringtones through axcess shop or sending/receiving pic messages on my pay-per-minute line with an E815. So I'm not sure what might be wrong, it might be that the rep you talked to thought your account was suppose to be that way, but accessing data and pic messages are something that it seems like you should have access to since your phone is capable. It may be worth the time to call AlltelU tech support and explain your pic messaging and ringtone problems in case there is an account setting that is wrong.
    If it's just a problem with your model phone, you should have a 15 day return period where it can be exchanged.

    Re: Alltel U Prepaid Pay Per Day

    This is accurate information for AlltelU on the pay-per-day plans. As a footnote, it is only on the pay-per-minute plans that there are now replenishment periods for how long your minutes are good.

    Rate and Days of Service
    $20 – $44.99 60 days
    $45 – $54.99 90 days
    $55 – $99.99 180 days
    $100 or more 365 days

    But if you're not on a pay-per-day plan, it's nothing to worry about as all discussion on this thread has been about so far.

    If you received a text message directing you to a website to view the picture, then that sounds like picture messaging service did not fully provision on your account, a call in should be able to resolve that.

    If you received the picture and it would not download, than that could be something on either phone or computer system.

    As far as Axcess Shop, this is open to prepaid customers now. (There was a time it wasn't.) Just remember: browsing through the Catalog and Apps uses airtime and I *think* there is a minimum balance requirement to be on your prepaid account to let apps work. (Don't remember the exact amount, but it may be $10?) Also, any apps that have a monthly charge or monthly subscription are still blocked on prepaid. Examples of this would be a game that is 2.99/mth or 7.99 one-time. The monthly option wouldn't be available to prepaid.

    (If I'm wrong on any of this, please feel free to correct me, I haven't taken many prepay calls at work recently)
