I just started work (actually, I was recalled from layoff) at the Boeing factory in Everett, Washington. You probably know this building or have heard of it - it's the largest building in the world by volume (472,000,000 cubic feet), where the 747, 767 and 777 airplanes are built (and the new 787 too, in about a year). Anyway, when I am inside any of the buildings I get no service at all with my Sony Ericsson T637.

I am really happy with the phone and Cingular otherwise but if I cannot make/receive calls then I will have to jump ship to either Verizon or Sprint in July, when my Cingular contract expires.

Has anyone else had this experience? Is there anything that I can do on my end? Is this just a drawback of the GSM network (does not work well in gargantuan building complexes with a HUGE roof)? Others who work at Boeing who have either Verizon or Sprint CDMA service seem to have no problems.

I'd complain to Cingular. ATT or Cingular should work there, especially ATT since it's 850 there. I wonder if T-Mobile works there?

Sprint and Verizon must simply have closer towers. I bet you're glad you have a 1 yr contract! Maybe Boeing let them install repeaters?

Glad you're back to work, being laid off can be great, but getting back to work/routine is good. My dad would be laid off sometimes from DaimlerChrysler, and he'd still get paid 95% of his salary. Gotta love unions :)

I'm an Airbus man though (FBW, more innovations, QUIETER!), but I support Boeing as well, all in all both produce good planes. Haven't been keeping up with stuff lately due to college and just new interests (ie cells haha).

The simple solution is to switch to Sprint or Verizon. There is nothing that you can do.

Does Sprint have Reception Inside the Building?
Maybe VZW if they're 850 MHz.
Cingular probably does'nt have a Tower near the Area.
This reminds me of T-Mobile in my friend's House
and it took them a year to colocate in an
existing Tower, now there's coverage Inside
    my friend's House.
Inside Building reception will work if towers are near.

I'd have to agree with the poster above. In fact, I am curious--have you seen anyone successfully taking on a cell phone inside the building. I wouldn't be surprised if a large firm like that were using jambing technology in an effort to prevent industrial (and possibly political) espionage.

KJ: Yes, there are lots of folks who can use either Verizon or Sprint. A co-worker also has Cingular and she cannot get service like me.

Boeing does have an employee discount plan with Verizon but last time I tried one of their phones I could get no service at my house.

Thx for the help - - Back to work (I'm on lunch)!

    So here's your Situation:

    With VZW:
    There's Coverage inside Work Building
But No coverage Inside your House.

    With Cingular:
    No coverage inside Work Building
But there's Coverage Inside your House.

    I believe you and this
    is a Tough Choice.

Try Sprint. You have 14 days to return the phone and cancel the contract if it does not function at your home and work. If Sprint works for you, then cancel Cingular. That is the only viable option.

When did you last try Verizon? Things might have changed. You have a 15 day worry free guarantee. Sprint has a 14 day trial if you want to give them a shot.

    R32VW,

As both Verizon and Sprint have contracts to provide phones for Boeing employees, I would bet that both Verizon and Sprint have towers or repeaters on Boeing property; most likely on the roofs.

As a Boeing employee, you would be eligible for a SIGNIFICANT discount on your Sprint bill if you switched.

    1. No, I don't sell Sprint nor do I recommend them; even though I have a Sprint account AND the LARGE Boeing employee discount.

    2. I wouldn't say it's the size of the roof, but simply that the roof is a large piece of metal and with no signal enhancers, your signal is simply not going anywhere without one.

Best of luck and welcome back!!!

I would concur... you should try Sprint, or borrow someone's Sprint phone for a day at work. And corporate discounts can really work to your advantage -- I have a 20% Verizon discount through work and it's quite awesome. They even installed repeaters in the main buildings (which, being bomb shelters, were build to withstand everything including radio signals) so now you can use it.

I agree with Chinasaur. Boeing has huge contracts with both VZW and Sprint. Sprint has the bulk of the business, but VZW is trying very hard to win it away from Sprint. Both VZW and Sprint roam on each other's networks as well, so if you don't have coverage from one you'll have it from the other.

GSM carriers just don't have the coverage depth that Sprint and VZW offer here in the Seattle area. Combine the poor coverage quality with a Sony-Ericsson handset (these have notoriously poor RF), and you're bound to be unhappy.

Sprint offers a considerable discount to Boeing employees. You will probably save so much the first year that it'll more than cover your Cingular ETF.

I first want to say Thank You to all who have offered advice; I initially thought that this thread would not receive so much attention.

This is what I have learned: Verizon has a tower (or antenna) installed somewhere on the Boeing factory roof complex. I spoke with a guy who has been in the tunnels beneath the floor and he claims to get great reception even there. I am fairly sure that Boeing has an employee discount plan with VZW, somewhere in the 10-15 % region. I have not checked with Sprint yet.

The last time I tried VZW was June 2004 and that was with their Nokia 3588/9i (I forget which model # it was). At that time I was unable to get calls at my home, which is important as my internet connection is dialup and I have me land line set up to forward to the cell. phone when it is busy.

BTW, I have not noticed poor RF with my SE T637. Also, for the record, I am in no way unhappy with either Cingular or Sony Ericsson. I am only changing because I need my phone to work when I am at work. My Cingular contract is up this July so I may just stay with them until then - I don't know. My usage is so low (around 100-150 hours/month) that it seems stupid to have 2 contracts. All I really want in a plan is around 300-350 hours and free nationwide long distance. I don't travel outside of Puget Sound so roaming is not an issue.

I would really like for my next phone to have a speakerphone. I think that the only LG that has one is the VX8000 but it is not Tri-mode, which may not be too important for my use. Does anyone know of a Samsung phone that has a speakerphone?

Last question (for now): Is it cheaper for me to buy at a Verizon bricks-and-mortar store, at VerizonWireless.com, or through their 800 number? I spoke to a really pushy saleswoman at VZW's 800 number center and she was insistent that I would save money by going with her instead of a B&M store. BTW, I will probably go with a 1-year plan (I don't care about spending more for the phone).

The Nokia 3589i is a great phone, RF wise, and if you do decide to try Verizon again, you can see if they improved coverage at your home, and if not then you can cancel within your 15 day trial policy.
If you do go with Verizon's America's Choice, Sprint's coverage in WA should be included for free, meaning if Sprint has coverage at your house, while Verizon does not, your phone should automatically switch to SprintPCS, if it didn't last year, that might mean that Sprint doesn't even serve your house:

You can go to a Verizon corporate store, ask them for the best possible deal, then you can call Telesales and ask them for their best deals, and just compare.

Other LG Verizon phones I know for sure have speaker phones is the 6100, 4700, and the 4500, I think. The 6100 I know for sure is tri-mode.

My recommendation would be go with Sprint. Vision plans offer much more than the VZW plans. My buddy has VZW and he can't get the kind of unlimited access (pictures specifically) Sprint offers. Unless someobdy can show me where I'm missing the boat on VZW's prices, Sprint wins.

I guess your deciding factor would be how many friends are on either network and if you need somthing like Unlimited Vision/Pictures.

    Luck.

    *** UPDATE ***

Was just talking to VZW buddy about Sprint v VZW plans and how VZW didn't have Unlimited plans. He said he spoke with a VZW rep yesterday about not having Unlimited..and he said that Rep told him "We don't have that feature RIGHT NOW..and I can't talk about anything coming up in the future... But check our site on or after next Wednesday (4/20/05) and you might find what you are looking for"

Sooo..be interesting to see if the rep was blowing smoke, or if she knew about an upcoming Unlimited net plan for VZW. I'm not a VZW subscriber so I'm not clued in to what they offer, but since both Sprint and VZW offer 2000 min for $100, having VZW's enhanced caller base and coverage would be a deal maker for some over Sprint.

I am thinking about getting the LG VX-8000 from VZW (for a trial at least) but I am somewhat concerned that it is dual-mode only (850 & 1900). I wonder if my service (in the Pacific NW area) would be compromised at all with this phone.

I do not foresee myself needing unlimited pictures or the Vision plan.

Thanks for the Sprint info., Andy. :)

Verizon will come out with an unlimited 'IN' SMS/PIX/FLIX plan starting at $4.99 a month tomorrow 4/18. For someone who fell in love with Vision, you are correct saying that Verizon's Mobile Web doesn't come close. VZW's Mobile Web 2 is better, but still not as good as Vision's Webservices.
R32, if you are in a populated area then having digital only shouldn't be a problem, unless you do travel out to the boonies from time to time. Checking coverage maps can give you a general idea though.

Although VZW is not the type of company who is known for "giveaways," you may get an eager pushy phone rep. to give you a better deal than you could get inside a store. Talk sweet yet undecisive and you may actually get certain features or promos that other customers may not get. I got a representative to give me free unlimited mobile web (normally $ 4.99 plus airtime) back in 2003 when I bought a VX10 from him and he through in a free CLA and leather case. He also gave me a 20% discount off my bill for three months. Keep in mind I've been a customer for a long time.

I'm not saying to expect freebies, but those guys have a quota to make and if you tell them you want to go to a retail store, they might try harder to win your business. Telesales actively competes for sales with the store representatives.

I believe some upcoming Samsungs have speakerphones. Here is a video of the Sammy A970.

    http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2005/03/20/samsung-a970-video

Several sources say the Sammy A970 will have a speakerphone as well as every other feature "avaialble under the sun." Don't quote me on it though. Here are some more pics of the phone. Just click on each pic to enlarge it. This phone is expected to be available by June or July of this year but that is unconfirmed and subject to change.

Good luck with Verizon, the 8000 is a great phone, you might want to think about upgrading. Now I also wish you luck with Dialup, if you can afford it and get coverage, try at 1X, EV/DO data at home, if you can not get DSL or cable. I just refuse to dialup once you go fast there is no going back.

Thanks, Rasputin. I just tried my auntie's VZW phone and the coverage was very spotty around my yard and ended when I went inside my house. This leaves me with Sprint as the only choice (see my other thread).

BTW, neither DSL or cable is available in my neck o' the woods.

Sprint is a very good choice. I had Verizon for years and moved to a new home where Sprint is the only carrier that works reliably. I switched to Sprint and have never regretted it. I no longer have to stand on my head on my balcony facing South to make a call. My phone gets 4 bars of signal anywhere in my home. I also travel nationally and have been impressed with Sprint's coverage and roaming agreements. Vision also works very well and performs better than the Verizon equivalent. I do not work for Sprint, I am just a satisfied customer. I would suggest the Sanyo 7400 or the Sanyo 5600 as they have very good RF performance.

    Best of luck,

    -jim

SOMETIMES IT NEEDS A REPEATER to get indoor coverage

Cingular Wireless Completes $203 Million Digital Network Enhancement Plan in Washington, Prepared to Accelerate Growth in 2005
Additional sites, combined with AT&T Wireless sites, give Washington
    outstanding wireless coverage

SEATTLE, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless, the country's largest
wireless provider, announced that it has installed more than 110 cell sites
throughout Washington and Northern Idaho in 2004 as part of a $203 million
commitment to expand its digital wireless network performance and coverage.
Combined with the cell sites from the recently completed merger with AT&T
Wireless, Cingular's Washington/Northern Idaho area now has almost 1,500 cell
    sites.
"While we are pleased with our progress, we will not stop here," said Mike
Maxwell, Cingular's vice president and general manager. "In 2003, we made the
commitment to complete our advanced data and voice network across the nation,
and in 2004 we focused on increasing our coverage, particularly in residential
areas and in-building locations, by adding cell sites and an additional GSM
spectrum band and enhancing data services for our customers.
"We recognize that superior call quality and coverage are two of the most
critical factors that determine customer satisfaction. We are moving
aggressively to continue what we began earlier this year to ensure we have
'more bars in more places.' Our ALLOVER(SM) network* is the largest digital
voice and data network in America. We have an even larger commitment planned
    for 2005."

Highlights of the many 2004 enhancements include the following areas:
    - Enhanced GSM service in the Puget Sound area: Deployed an 850 MHz
overlay to the existing 1900 MHz GSM network to greatly improve the
overall coverage in the Puget Sound area. The 850 MHz spectrum
improved in-building coverage (business and residential areas), added
more capacity to the network, and improved call quality. In addition,
new antenna sites were added to enhance service for residents and
businesses in many areas of Washington and Northern Idaho.

    - New wireless service: Provided customers with new wireless service
where they work and live in Chewelah, Colville, Eatonville and Raymond

    - New highway wireless service: Extended existing wireless services to
new areas, such as Highway 395 from Deer Park to Kettle Falls; Highway
101 from Cosmopolis to downtown Raymond; Highway 7 connecting
Eatonville to Highway 161; I-90 from Coeur d'Alene to Wolflodge Creek
in Idaho; and Highway 41 from Spirit Lake to Old Town

    - Enhanced highway and road service: Created wireless service for
travelers of Highway 182 from Richland to Pasco; Yelm Highway in
Thurston County; Highway 525 and Highway 20 on Whidbey Island; Highway
162 in Pierce County from Alderton to South Prairie; Highway 101 from
    Leland to Quilcene

    - New technologies: Added new high-speed UMTS data service in Seattle,
including SeaTac airport and E911 Phase II service in 21 counties.

News stories like this can be found for almost any carrier. I can post VZW's network enhancements for 2004. This is all nice and good, BUT, Verizon still, with all those improvements, does not get any service at the OP's house, Cingular, while having done many upgrades as well, doesn't get service at his work...

I took my Cingular phone in to work today to see if I could get a signal and I was pleasantly surprised to see 4-5 bars. I called a few people to see how it sounded and they said it was fine. Cingular's coverage does seem to be improving by the day! I am now getting 25% off of my service as a Boeing employee and will be off-contract on June 28.
