Nextel's Tim Donahue to Open Nasdaq on Company's 10th Anniversary of Trading; Announces February 21 Earnings Call

RESTON, Va., Jan 30, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Tim Donahue, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Nextel Communications, Inc., (Nasdaq:NXTL) tomorrow will open trading of the Nasdaq Stock Market at the Nasdaq MarketSite(TM) in New York City's Times Square to commemorate the company's 10th year as a publicly traded corporation.
David Weild, vice chairman of Nasdaq, will join him in the market opening ceremony.

"We are extremely pleased to mark our 10th anniversary of trading on Nasdaq, having completed another successful year," said Donahue. "Strong customer demand for our differentiated wireless service continues to attract the highest quality customers among the national wireless carriers, and Nextel expects to wrap up 2001 with strong domestic subscriber and operating cash flow growth."

"We also expanded Nextel Direct Connect(R), our digital two-way radio service, and were the first - and still the only - national wireless carrier to bring Java applications to the U.S. market. We sharpened our focus to deliver mobile solutions for businesses that need to access, manage and use critical information on the go, and in 2002 we will build on the momentum of Nextel Direct Connect and our packet data services through such vertical markets as financial and information services, manufacturing, and distribution," said Donahue.

According to Weild, "Since joining Nasdaq, Nextel has been recognized for delivering next-generation wireless services to businesses and for having the wireless industry's most valuable customer base. We are pleased to have contributed to the company's growth and celebrate with them today."

Nextel will hold its fourth-quarter and year-end 2001 financial results call with the company's senior management on February 21, 2002 at 8:30 a.m. ET. At that time, Nextel will provide further details regarding its 2001 performance and also expects to discuss progress on new initiatives and operational partnerships aimed at reducing costs while enhancing the customer experience.
