I agree with DandyDon Nextel is going to switch to the Widen thing because it's any easy upgrade for them. I've used this company before and they do purchase their spectrum rather quietly. But I feel this company is far from being over because they obviously have the money somewhere. I mean they had to fork out some cash to be called the Nextel Cup Series on Nascar. I'm not with Nextel anymore ... but it just seems to me they don't like to make a big fuss about what they plan to do for the future. They seem to do things quietly and efficiently from the times I used them. I think it should be an interesting development to see what happens with them in the future.
I agree with you DandyDon. Folks are so quick to dog Nextel. Nextel just affirmed it added 2.2 million net adds for 03. If this company was so bad, do you think people would still be signing up? iDEN is a 2.5g packet data network. While the competition only talks about buckets of minutes, customers of Nextel enjoy great customer service, low drop and block call percentage. I am excited for WiDEN which I think will be rolled out NATIONWIDE in Q2 of 2004. DandyDon hit the nail on the head. Verizon and others all require separte coverage maps because of there patchwork of networks. Not Nextel, they go all out and upgrade the entire network.
Hey...all I gotta say is last time I got in a contest with DandyDon I lost. (No thanks to Verizon's sucky-side: PTT) So I'm not getting in on this one, Bobo!!
I wonder if and when Nextel decides to switch over their network to say CDMA or if they'd go GSM. Seems to me that they'd go GSM since they're phones already use sim cards. I've heard people say before that Nextel's service is like a form of GSM so take that for whatever it's worth. I just wonder myself if maybe they would go GSM since it seems to be growing out quite rapidly.
They seem more inclined towards CDMA for what I've heard. However, before they move to CDMA there is one problem: They don't have any cellular or PCS spectrum. Assuming they get some spectrum, they will need to build a whole new national network. However, getting the spectrum approved and deploying a whole new national network will take years and several billion dollars. By the time they finish, all other carriers will probably be on 4G because they started converting their networks over two years ago. So you can see how late Nextel is.
I guess Nextel is going with the motto of "better late than never". However I agree with you Bobo they may be a little late in making a transition towards the new technology. Time will tell I suppose. Should be many interesting developments this year to all carriers and will give us more to talk about on the forums
"Better late than never" Are we still talking about Nextel...or now we talking about Verizon?? I swear to God, If Verizon doesn't get a frickin' bluetooth phone out soon, I'm gonna get a new job. People used to ask "What time do your nights start?" Now they ask, "Do you have any phones with bluetooth?"
Theyre going to get some out of this reorganization deal with public safety radio. Damn Nextel and finding ways around having to actually bid for spectrum.
However, there's still another problem: How are they going to get the spectrum? They can't bid for it since all the cellular and PCS licenses were auctioned off already so there aren't any they can get from the FCC. So they'll have to buy them from someone else. So I wish them good luck trying to find a bunch of carriers willing to sell so they can put together a national network. That will set them back a few years more in addition to what I had said before.
