    Nextel Wins Navy Contract

    By TechWeb News

Nextel Communications Inc. on Monday said it has won a Navy contract that could be worth $100 million over five years.
Under the deal, the Reston, Va., wireless communications company will provide nationwide cellular phone service and instant digital walkie-talkie service for personnel at Navy installations. The one-year base contract is for $20 million, with options for an additional four years that would bring the total value of the deal to $100 million, company officials said.

Nextel has agreed to work with the Navy to consolidate existing cellular plans and to allow cellular phone minutes to be pooled over a larger user base. As part of the contract Nextel will dedicate resources to improving existing coverage on Navy bases and in Navy facilities.

"The size and scope of this Navy contract is a major milestone for Nextel and another in a series of powerful proof points demonstrating the performance and value of Nextel's mobile technology," said Leon Frazier, vice president for Nextel's public sector segment.
