    Nextel & Southern Linc

ATLANTA (November 12, 2001) -- Southern LINC®, the wireless communications service from Southern Company, today announced that it has signed a unilateral roaming agreement with Nextel Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTL) that will allow Southern LINC customers to access cellular phone services while roaming on portions of the Nextel National Network*.

The agreement allows Southern LINC customers to roam onto the Nextel National Network when they are outside the Southern LINC network of Georgia, Alabama, Southeast Mississippi and Northwest Florida. Southern LINC provides fully integrated digital wireless services that include two-way radio, cellular phone, paging, wireless Internet access and Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) applications from one integrated handset utilizing Motorola's iDEN technology. As a result of the agreement, Southern LINC customers will be able to utilize the cellular phone capability while roaming.

"The ability to roam provides more convenience and options for our cellular customers who rely on communications for their businesses." says Bob Dawson, president and CEO of Southern LINC. "The roaming agreement more than quadruples the area where our customers can have access to cellular phone service and includes cities all over the country, so we can meet our customers' needs when business takes them outside of the Southern LINC footprint."

Southern LINC anticipates that its customers may begin roaming onto Nextel's network during the second quarter of 2002.
