Subscriber Numbers Bolster Nextel February 6, 2002 Unlike several of its U.S. competitors, Nextel Communications Inc.'s new subscriber numbers for the fourth quarter surpassed previous predictions. During the last three months of 2001, Nextel added 501,000 new mobile subscribers -- ahead of earlier guidance of 460,000 to 490,000 newcomers. The figures bring Nextel's full year 2001 additions to 1.99 million, at the high end of earlier predictions. 'Strong demand for our differentiated service continues to drive greater market share for Nextel,' says Tim Donahue, Nextel president and CEO. Several top U.S. carriers -- including Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless -- missed expectations for fourth-quarter subscriber additions. The news forced wireless stocks into a tailspin and produced a flurry of reports from analysts. However, Nextel affiliate Nextel Partners, AT&T Wireless, Leap Wireless International and a handful of others managed to beat expectations.
