Does anyone know if Nextel works at the Outer Banks and also if Nextel has any plans to expand into the far eastern part of NC. Looking at their most recent coverage map, it looks like Nextel is lacking in that part of the state. Thanks in advance.
Nextel's coverage map show you were you may have coverage. They are working on trying to ensure that you do have coverage in those areas. Additional coverage outside of those maps is not such a concern for them. If the area you want covered is not on the map then you are basically SOL. Now, If you are a large businees owner (100 + employees) and need coverage for a $50K/month account they might be able to work something out for you. Other than that. if its not on the map its not int there buildout plans.
Does VZW make guarantees that u will have good coverage even when its on there maps as being covered?
No. But, with Nextel and the Outer Banks, coverage DOES NOT extend south to Ocracoke Island. How far it does extend I don't know, but I have a friend who has a house on Ocracoke and his entire family has Nextel phones that become extremely dead there.
No company does. The maps are approximated coverage / rate area only. I have found some detailed coverage approximated mapos on the Support section of there website though.
This forum is not as heavy on the Nextel users. Try going here. They will probably have an answer for you. Also, remeber to use the search feature there before you post. The question may have been answered already.
Nextel has no coverage at the outer Banks right now. Mt boss was there several weeks ago and his company Nextel was dead's ville. His Sprint Phone seemed to work most places.
Thanks everyone for their replies. I know nextel works from nags head up to duck, nc. I remember though that south of nags head down to ocracoke it dies. My verizon service has always seemed to work flawlessly over the entire area. I was told by a source that nextel was going put up a tower on ocracoke island of all places. I will believe that when i see it.
There is coverage there, and has been for a while. Service has greatly improved in the last year and a half too with decent coverage in that area. His company's Nextel was dead because he probably didn't want it to work  .
I really think that Sprint PCS service is an affiliate (AirGate PCS). I am quite sure it is on North Carolina's south coast (Wilmington, etc.) - just look at coverage map showing it as a non-1xRTT area. EDIT: Yep, it's an affiliate. $10/mo for Free & Clear America, but it's the same F&CA as in corporate markets, just twice the price.
This may be a bit late, since I just saw this thread today. I live on Hatteras Island and Nextel and sprint do not work here on the island they both die out at the oregon inlet bridge. Nextel from what I hear the tower is in Southern Shores or Kill Devil Hills and the tower closest to the island is at whalebone junction.
From what I understand Nextel is supposed to have a pretty aggressive build out here over the next 2 years. Hopefully we'll see that happening as I plan on switching back to them.
If you have a Sprint phone it will still say "Sprint" on it whether it's an affiliate area or not. Heck, I live in an Horizon PCS affiliate area and while we don't get the same Free Clear America plans, I don't think it's dreadful either. All of my bills say Sprint, my phone is Sprint, and my service says Sprint. I'm just trying to figure out why you made a point of saying the outer banks was in an affiliate market? edit: I see from the Sprint map that Sprint has some coverage at Nags Head, but I can't really tell how far south it goes as I've never been there. Are we talking about Sprint or Nextel that has improved service? edit no.2: Well Digital Beach has answered my question. Time for me to go to bed!
My friend with Verizon seems to be having no troubles there, as I called her last night after the hurricane. I don't know what island she is on though, I guess I should ask!
Some affiliates are cash-strapped and built out sub-par quality networks. I can't speak for the particular affiliate that serves Myrtle Beach, and there certainly are good affiliates, but I felt I should point out that price plans may not be the same in affiliate markets, and some affiliate markets don't have the same quality coverage as corporate markets.
The last time i checked neither Nextel or SprintPCS have any plans to extend service to Ocracoke Nextels service stops roughly at Nags Head and you can get sprint a little father south. Suncom provides service as far as Hatteras. Your choices of service on Ocracoke are very limited.
At least it works there now. 3 or 4 years ago my family went to Nags Head (we were staying near the Wright Bros Memorial on the sound side). Cingular & ATT phones worked, but my brother in law's Nextel was a useless brick there.
I had continuous service from Wanchese all the way down to Morehead City with my Alltel...even on the ferry. I have no idea who I was roaming on though.
Doesn't Alltel, with most, if not all, of their PRLs, mark any SID that's not your home SID as roaming of some sort?
Yes. Once I leave SID 114, I get the free roam flashing triangle. I get it once I cross the county line between Davis and Rowan county on I85 and whenever I hit Catawba county north of Lincoln county or west of Iredell county on I40. The system is amazingly accurate. I get the triangle within 1/2 mile of crossing the county line!
Eeh, that's nothing. I switched systems from VZW PCS Myrtle Beach to Alltel Cell B within 100 feet of the state line. That's accuracy.
Djjim, you are on Alltel towers in eastern NC. Most of NC is Alltel owned areas, except for the mountain areas. Asheville, Boone, over towards Murphy and such. There is a lot of building in '05 and '06 in eastern NC. You are also getting more in the Charlotte market as we speak.
I wish Alltel would put out press releases like Cingular and a lot of small wireless companies do telling you where the towers are going! I'd love to know where the Charlotte area service is going to be improved! Care on sharing TowerTester?
