Nextel is terrible. Whats the deal with "please wait while we locate the nextel subscriber...............please wait while we locate the nextel subscriber..........please wait wait wait wait.........." that is soooooo annoying. Nextel works really crappy in manhattan especially on certain parts of the FDR. Which is a real indicator of crappiness. I have not met a single person who would stay with nextel if it werent for the walkie talkie. I wanna see how well nextel does when sprint and verizon introduce this feature.

I know, why don't we talk about all the dead spots with Sprint PCS or T-Moblie..hmm I didn't think so!![IMG]

Somehow we got off the original topic, so far I haven't see anyone with a better plan than what Nextel is currently offering. If so please feel free to post it, otherwise we should start another thread titled "You don't have Nationwide DC and I do" Jealousy will get you guys nowhere...lol

What good is Nationwide Direct Connect if your phone keeps say...please wait while we locate the Nextel subscriber..........please wait wait wait!
I can't speak about Nextel in other parts of the country but in the NYC Metro area the dead spots and dropped calls far surpass any of the other 5 carriers.
As i have noted in other post about Nextel I hang with a group of friends who just happen to all have the major carriers (T-Mobile, AT&T, CIngular, Verizon, Nextel and I have Sprint)
We got together a lot for the Holidays and spent a lot of time driving around Manahttan, Brooklyn and Queens and on 3 separate occasions my fiend with Nextel had to borrow one of our phones because his could not complete a call and when he was able to get service and make a call it dropped the calls several times.
The Cingular, AT&T, Verizon and my Sprint all had service during those times where the Nextel phone failed to get a signal and keep in mind that we are all side by side in the same spot, we actually put all the phones side by side in one spot and the only one showing no service was Nextel.
As for the Direct Connect...well that is something cool (once again, when you can get through) but Nextel will be losing that edge soon when Sprint and Verizon get PTT.
I just don't see where Nextel has is so Great, Maybe in other cities they have an edge in service but in NYC They Bite, I have seen that first hand.

Well i'm guessing you don't have allot of experience with Nextel right ??? because that does not happen when you use DC, only when you try to call a Nextel customer who is not currently id on the network or is in a weak coverage area. Lets not forget, Sprint, Verizon and everyone else also have this problem but, they just forward it to their voicemail. Also as far as you friends phone who knows what's going on, what phone does he have??? what software version??? as I'm sure you don't know, it could be the phone, it could be the tower in that particular area. We have 37 phones with Nextel and travel all over NJ,PA and NY, and have never experienced any problems trying to contact any of my employees at any given time.

By the way Verizon & Sprints "Two way" feature wont be as quick as Nextels right away, it will take them along time to work this out.

My friend has the i90 and that's one of their better phones isn't it?
Your right about the direct connect not asking you to wait, it just beeps and beeps and beeps if no one answers or if you can't get through so I guess me and my friends were in a dead spot for Nextel (3 different times), Oh and I think the post by Digiblur (just after your last post) answered your question about who has the better service plan.
Your probably right about Sprint and Verizon not perfecting the PTT right away but the wheels are in motion and in time they may even do it better then Nextel so like I said before.....
It looks like Nextel is losing the one Edge it had over it's competitors, It's only a matter of time now.

First, yes your right i90 is one of their better phones..but, that doesn't necessarily mean that the phone is working properly. Regarding Didiblur's plan, that is a retention plan, sorry to burst you bubble [IMG] if Sprint were to offer that to everyone they would go out of business. So again, I ask who can beat this plan that Nextel is currently offering???? By the way, current Nextel customers can get 1200 anytime instead of 1000 for signing a 1 year agreement.

digiblur: then pray tell where you can find that plan? Checking their website, i only find 300 minutes, unlimited n/w and unlimited vision for 30. change that to 40 and you get 400. But no one is giving out a 1000.

One thing I would like to know, Nextel is going to do an upgrade to their system that will double voice capacity, now from my experience, the voice quality for Nextel was not the same as the CDMA or TDMA phones that I have used. So they are going to go to a vocoder that uses about half the bandwidth that it used now, what is that going to do for the voice quality? Or is this not going to have any effect on it? Another thing I dont miss about Nextel is that phone wreaking havoc on anything close to it, when I had it on my desk, I could tell 2 seconds before it would ring from all the interference it would create on my monitor.

Nextel is installing 49.9MHz repeaters on their towers, so they can sell Radioshack walkie-talkies to their customers without rebadging them.

Well, your right about one thing, T-moblie is not looking for someone to buy them, because none will!!! Nextel added 2,800 new sites last year, not including Nextel partners, and im sure Sprint tops that easily. This year Nextel is supposed to almost double that, and start getting into more rural area's, according to Nextel corporate in south, NJ.

Everyone wants T-Mobile. They have the largest GSM network in the U.S., that's why everyone wants them. Both AT&T and Cingular wanted to buy or merge with T-Mobile, but nothing happened. They were turned down.

    Oh, I love this thread.

My boyfriend had Sprint for awhile, and while I'm no huge fan of Sprint, he never seemed to have that many problems. He then switched to Nextel, and loves it. I, however, hate it, as does everyone else that needs to get in touch with him. I'm not sure which phone he's using; I know it's a blue Motorola flip phone, if that helps at all. His calls are CONSTANTLY being dropped, and while he insists it's my phone, it's really not. My calls don't drop with anyone else. Also, I can never hear him! (Although that's probably an issue with his phone, and not his service.) And this is all when I'm able to actually get through to him. Half the time, I get that irritating message: "Please wait while the Nextel subscriber you are trying to reach is located." He lives in the suburbs and Nextel can never seem to locate his freaking phone. It's so, so frustrating.

(And don't even get me started on that mobile-to-mobile walkie talkie feature. Beep, beep... it's constant. I guess it's a cool feature, but it's so annoying.)

sorry im late on this thread...but did you know that nextel can afford to give away all these free minutes because they have the worst network (thats a fact) out of all the cellular providers and also the smallest customer base...nextel is basically a "2-way" provider which makes their service stand out from the rest, and they just throw in a half-assed working cell phone with the deal...what happens now that they lost the patent for their "BLOOP BLOOP" direct connect service?? they're nothing...now verizon wireless on the other hand is planning to launch this service very soon (june'ish, who knows??) ON TOP OF HAVING THE BEST AND MOST ADVANCED WIRELESS CELL NETOWRK?? holy smokes!!

GREAT YOU HAVE ALL THESE MINUTES....NOW WHAT GOOD ARE THEY WITHOUT THE CONNECTION!?!? i have no clue how verizon is gonna plan this though (pricing and equipment wise...new series of phones and price plans?? what about the customers that are not eligible, 10 months into contract, for the upgrade??).................................peace all

herbrock17 made some very good points in his post, the future does not look very bright for Nextel as a cellular carrier, hmmm...they can make Walkie Talkies to sell at Radio Shack when they Fold as a Cellular Provider.
Verizon, Bring on the PTT....no matter how rough around the edges it will be when Verizon first introduces their PTT they cant do any worse then Nextel.

I'm not sure what your deal is but get off the "V" wagon already, god...this forum should be called "VerizonWirelessadvisor.com" and we could call you captain "V."
If you don't mind me asking, when was the last time you personally owned a Nextel phone and used their service?? I'm guessing never, so please, don't talk about the quality of their service.
Just one more question for you, why is Verizon & Sprint "supposedly" trying to make a PPT service???? Hmmmmmmm....

Is there ever a post on this forum that doesnt basically say "my provider is better than your provider"? I have always been a big electronic junkie, and have found many forums that offer great info, and intelligent conversation. Then I found this forum. There seems to be some useful information, but it seems like most of the time everybody just wants to down everyone else's service. Come on! Each of us have a cell phone provider. I am happy with mine and you are happy with yours. Let it go at that. Is there anybody on this forum that is past puberty yet? If I offended anyone im sorry. But this forum could offer a lot if some of you would grow up.

It's clear that most people responding here think that Nextel is garbage. Doesn't your choice of carrier ultimately depend on where you are, AND how you use the phone? Sprint phones are very pretty, and if I wanted a piece of jewelry, they get my vote. How about what counts? Connectivity and voice quality are right up there, if you want to use it as a phone.

Here is how I see it - on Sprint I drop calls, on Nextel I do not. When I'm inside an office building, I would say 50% of the time, I would lose Sprint signal. On Nextel, I do not. Voice quality has a lot to do with the phone. The i90c is so much better than Nextel's older series. However, I have never had a problem with Sprint's voice quality. Bulky phone? Well, it probably has the best speakerphone in the business, and this has to add bulk. But when you live in a state with mandated hands free use of the cell phone while driving, I can simply put the Nextel phone on the seat next to me and talk. No headset necessary. How much is that worth to someone? To me a lot, to others, maybe not so much. And for those who say Direct Connect is not worth it, well, I am sure they simply haven't tried it. You get used to that feature very fast.

I'm sure everyone has their own spin on this stuff, but for me, Nextel rules.

Wow, there really is a bunch of misinformation out there about Nextel. First of all, carrier coverage variess by region. In my experience, this is how the carriers rank in Rhode Island/Southastern MA/Eastern Connecticut:

    1. Verizon Wireless (bestt)
    2. Nextel
    3. AT&T Wireless
    4. T-Mobile
    5. Cingular Wireless
    6. SprintPCS (worst)

I've used all of them. I even sold SprintPCS for 3 months. We basically lied to people about "good coverage in RI", and they'd come back pissed off. Even my company-issued Samsung SprintPCS phone would have frequent dropped calls, no service, and virtually no indoor coverage. In my opinion, Verizon Wireless is has the best coverage around here, and I am planning to switch. Not because I am not happy with Nextel, but because I have a Veriations package with Verizon (DSL/Land-Line/Long-Distance) which saves me $15 a month, and even more if I sign up for wireless. I'm just waiting for some of their newer Samsung models to launch.

I've had Nextel for over a year. Pros and Cons:

    Pros:
    -Direct-Connect is very useful
-Coverage is excellent almost everywhere I go
    -Wireless Web is pretty fast
-I have the i90 with color-led flashing battery (very cool looking and gets lots of looks)
-Phones are rugged and can be dropped on concrete with few scratches and no ill effects
-Call forwarding and Speakerphones on ALL models (including the i90 and i95)

    Cons:
-Phones are relatively expensive for the features provided (color model i95c is $350)
    -Wireless Web is down sometimes

When you get that message, "Please hold while we locate the Nextel subscriber...", that is because the subscriber is using the PTT! This message is NOT because the peson has no coverage, it's because they are using the Walkie-Talkie. Do some research before you bash.

For the past year, I have only had one dropped call with Nextel, believe it ot not. ONE DROPPED CALL. With Sprint, I would have a dropped call every day. With Voicestream(T-mobile), coverage in rural-ish areas was non-existant. WithCingular, I would be yelling into my phone "Hello! Can you hear me?".

BTW, Motorola owns a stake in Nextel and that's why ONLY Motorola makes Nextel handsets! So Motorola isn't going to stop making hansdets for Nextel. Didn't you guys even know this? Motorola developed the friggin' iDEN technology.

If you happy with your provider, then great. But don't bash Nextel based on your own ignorance. For every situation a Nextel phone phone doesn't work in some specific place in this vast country, there's a bunch more places where another carrier has no coverage either and Nextel does.

Thank god, some fellow "Nextelteers" it will be nice to have some support. I'm so tired of "Verizon this, Verizon that" I'm starting to think this website is for Verizon.
