OK, I have not used Nextel, so this may be a dumb question. In their new line of ads they feature famous people (actors I guess) on a split screen. In one they try to get through with traditional cell phones and can't, the other they direct connect and disaster is averted because they were able to get right through to the person they were trying to contact. My question is...if someone can "answer" a direct connect, why couldn't they answer a regular cell? What about hearing those little DC chirps is any more effective at getting someone to answer than a regular cell call?
OK good, I think the ads are really stupid too, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything before I opened my big fat mouth!
Hehe! Nextel's plans are really not too bad right now with the messaging and bonus minutes package. The commercials are still dumb though!
Yeah I don't get them (commercials) either. I have heard commercials for Boost Mobile are great though.
The Boost commercials are really funny. The Nextel ones with the split screen are really, really stupid.
Boost is only selling service in CA/NV right now...however, they have some of the ads on their web site in the usual streaming video formats. -SC
You can get someone's attention quicker if they have their group speaker on. DC them and say something like "HEY STUPID. ANSWER YOUR (expletive deleted) PHONE". I used to torture coworkers when I was on a SAR team we had Nextel (way back in 1997/1998, the old Raven R370- more like two way radios than phones) by DC them when I knew they were in public places and saying rude comments. I kinda missed it when they took them away, we were using them too much and they caused some RFI problems to our agency issued 800 radios. But man it was fun! the point of the commercials is to show how much quicker it is to send a quick message on the DC end then a conventional call. After all, you CAN keep the speaker on loud, and listen to someone's message with NO USER INTERVENTION. You can't really do that with 99 percent of all celphones, unless you have a speakerphone and enable auto answer feature. I think Nextel is going more for end users and families now than business like they used to. On our search and rescue team, we got them to try out to supplement our regular 800MHz trunked radios, since we often assisted other agencies their personnel and command staff had Nextel (or their competitor Southern LINC). Nextel is trying to show how time can be saved by using DC. I am kinda amazed they haven't started showing the group call/talkgroup features, this would be great for large familes or groups of friends. And when you are talking to more than one or two people, a one at a time (half duplex) mode is so much easier to contend with then multiple 3-way telephone calls. If you ever used two way radio you know what I mean.
