Hey folks, I'm curious to know if any Nextel users are experiencing the following problem: About a month ago, I started receiving unsolicted spam text messages on my cell phone. I do not have web service on my phone, but I can receive text messages from the Nextel website or from the internet - ONLY if the sender knows my cell phone number. All the messages are spam - advertisements. Apparently, I get charged 10 cents for every text message I receive. I contacted Nextel to complain about this. I asked how spammers could have gotten a hold of my cell phone number which allows them to send spam out, which in turn, I end up paying for. Nextel has no clue how or why this is happening. They told me to save the messages on my phone and send them a copy of the message so that they can track down the spammers. They also said that the only way I can prevent spam is to cancel my voice mail option all together since voice and text messages are bundled. Meanwhile, I still get charged. Of course, Nextel has not set up any compensation for its customers for such an inconvenience, nor have they provided an explanation as to how spammers have a hold of phone numbers. Friends of mine, who are Nextel users, are experiencing the same thing and they believe that Nextel has provided their customers' numbers and are receiving some kick back from spammers. I don't know about that - but I am curious if other Nextel users are having the same problem and if so, what have they done about it and have they met any success? Thank you.
I've never got any spam text messages on my phone. But they won't waste any time if you get text messages in charging you 10 cents per message. I've thought about callin them and just tellin them to block all text messages on my acct.
I have a real easy soulution to this. Drop Nextel and thier outdated and horible IDEN network and jump on the Verizon Push To Talk! ITs comeing real soon!
We'll see how ur network handles ptt. Word has it the network is getting strained. More and more problems just before WLNP! Enjoy
I haven't experienced this myself, but I was just reading Time and thought of this thread when I read the following article. When Spam Hits Your Cell Phone According to the FCC, you should report it. Abuse like this carries a $500 fine.
