A Verizon-Sprint merger cannot be good for the consumer. It reduces the number of legitimate mainstream national carriers for the average non-corporate customer from 4 to 3 (I am not counting Nextel as a "mainstream" carrier, as I view them as more targeted towards corporate customers) and that cannot possibly be a good thing.
"back in the day" there were only two carriers per market and we still managed to have competition. For this type of service usually only 1-2 providers will be dominant in a market. Power companies, phone companies, clec's, cable providers and wireless providers...they all have a really high cost to provide service, and not every provider is going to have the same service level. To get stronger the smaller companies will merge or go under. I'm looking for many mom and pop wireless companies to start getting real agressive (Hargray Wireless in my area is already offering an Unlimited usage plan for $19.99....I don't think they would say so many competitors is a good thing.)
