Larry, Squeeky wheel gets the grease! So on one of my many calls to complain about NO service at Weir Canyon and Oak Canyon (top of Weir - South of 91) an agent in the trouble ticket dept stated (after approx 20mins on hold) that 3 towers are going up around the resevoir in the hills behind my house. Now, what got me to believe him is that he mentioned the two towers I know of (thanks Larry) - Villa Park and the one near Larry's house (55/91). THe rep couldn't confirm when or exactly where around the resevoir.... So, Larry, can you confirm any of this and get more info? I don't want to get any hopes up for a rep that is supplying false statements. Thanks, Eric
Eric, There are already 3 towers close to there. Sprint has one, Cingular has one, and AT&T is putting up the other one. They're mounted on two different Edison Utility towers near Canyon Rim & Fairmont overlooking the golf course. These are the only towers that will be placed in this area that I'm aware of. The City shot down a proposal from Sprint to build another one near the Elementary School last year. There have been no other applications submitted since then.
crap. I pulled a map for the towers you spoke of...not going to help my area. Need a tower to assist the area where Toyon park is. Hopefully Sprint will win approval and work fast to solve this black hole.
Yeah I know exactly where you are. The coverage sucks there for most if not all providers. I don't think the City has allowed any antennas around there yet. There are none planned at this time and even if there were the local neighbor groups would surely turn out to oppose them.
You can't. It's not entirely up to Sprint. It's up to the Anaheim City planning commission and the people that live in the neighborhoods on whether they will allow one. Sprint has to be able to lease land from somebody in order to build an antenna. If there's no place to put one then it's not going to happen no matter how many people complain about it. It took me over 6 years to get an antenna built near my house. Sprint was finally able to convince SCE to lease them land to place an antenna on Meats Ave. I went to the city planning hearing to support the proposal in November and we won. It's under construction right now and should be on in about 3-4 weeks.
alright then, so my first step should be to get Sprint aware of the problem and shopping for property. any pointers/pieces of advice to get the ball rolling?
It's very likely that they already are looking for a land deal to build something there. It just takes getting lucky. Toyon Park might be a good location if the City is willing to lease land and issue a permit without the NIMBY's causing trouble. They could do a pine tree, ball field light pole, or clock tower. Those are the ones that have the best shot at getting approval. In the mean time I would just keep submitting trouble tickets to Sprint about the poor coverage. Call in about once every month or two.
Larry, I want to be proactive and get this going. I want to find out if Sprint has proposed a site, where and what the status is. Where in the city do I look? Basically, who do I talk to see about this being done.
You could try e-mailing the Anaheim city planning dept. and ask them if Sprint has any current applications for cellular facilities pending. planningcommission@anaheim.net
larry, talked to trouble tech at sprint to get to their "tower dept" - no such thing I guess...but he did tell me of a tower with an "on-air" date of 4/8/4 -- this tower is supposed to be just east of walnut canyon resevoir (at the intersection of canyon rim and serrano) - do you know anything about this? - an on-air date of 4/8 is really close!!!! <-- keeping my fingers crossed.
Eric, Sprint had plans last summer to place one right there across from the elementary school but they decided to drop plans for it because of protests from the area residents. I'll look into it but I have my doubts about it. There have been no public hearings with the City of Anaheim for any such tower. In some cases towers are exempt from public hearings but I don't believe this would be one of them unless it didn't exceed the height limit (doubtful) for the way that particular area is zoned. Those estimated on air dates from Sprint are usually way off. But hey miracles do happen and my fingers are crossed just like yours. Lets say they do end up activating a new tower there. It would have limited range and would not reach that well to Toyon Park anyway. But it would improve service to the surrounding area and along Serrano.
Eric, I hate to bring you the bad news but I just got back from Anaheim Hills. I did a complete seach of the entire area and there are no Sprint towers under construction at all. If Sprint has plans for a new site in the area of Serrano/Canyon Rim it's certainly not going to happen any time soon. One additonal disappointment that I discovered is that the only eligible place to locate a new tower is on that Edison Tower which overlooks the elementary school there on top of the hill. Problem is that lousy Cingular is installing one there right now. So they beat Sprint to the punch on this one. (I really hate Cingular/T-mobile and their site hogging ) It's looking doubtful for Sprint unless they can co-locate with Cingular on that one (which is unlikely).
When did you take this picture? The equipment is in a vault underground and as far as I know the equipment (Minus the tower) is already installed. Is that South Serrano on the left and E Canyon Rim on the right?
I took this just yesterday. Yep I saw the underground vault and that is the location. I'm just wondering what the tower's going to look like. It will be the very frist ever freestanding tower in the history of Anaheim Hills!
Ahh so that's it. I didn't think the city would approve a monopole and I figured it was either a light standard or clock tower like the one they installed in Mission Viejo a few years back. Glad to hear it's a light standard because those can be built rather quickly in comparison to a clock tower.
*giggle* Meats Avenue. We looked at a place over near where that crosses Orange Olive... terrible, terrible building... and can you imagine saying "I live near the corner of Orange Olive and Meats"? I should have checked coverage in our new place... ah well... I can't imagine anyone having coverage problems so close to Angel Stadium.
Orange Olive & Meats? Isn't there some railroad tracks close to there. Not a place I would want to live. lol Speaking of Angel stadium yes you're right it's saturated with coverage by everyone. In fact for some reason Sprint just added CDMA to that green Nextel tower just South of Orangewood Ave. & the 57 along the riverbed. Probably mainly a capacity site.
Yes, there's a Metrolink track right outside the building. And the owners of the unit decided they wanted their own w/d set, so they bought a stackable w/d, set it up in the dining room, and drilled the exhaust hole through the outside cripple wall. It was Not Good. I'm not concerned about coverage near Angel Stadium (where the Anaheim Angels play, not the frickin' Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, what the hell was that?) but more about capacity during games there or at the Pond or concerts at the Grove.
Hey you should have looked at our building in Orange near Meats/Tustin. 3 bedroom, 2 bath townhouse style for $1375/month. lol. But it's been rented now. Don't think you have to worry about capacity around stadium/Pond on game/event days. There's plenty of towers to handle it.
I assumed they brought in COWs for large events. Meats and Tustin, eh? By the TJ's? We're buying, though, not renting.
I've never seen a COW around Anaheim Stadium or the Pond. Not sure about the other carriers but to my knowledge the only time Sprint ever uses a COW in So. Cal is during the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl. Oh ok wasn't sure if you were renting or buying. Yes right near the TJ's and the Sprint store on the opposite corner of TJ's. I was just there today shopping.
Latest picture: Sprint's site looks complete now. Cingular pulled a surprise and is also putting up a site next to Sprint's (in the background).
