I heard a rumor that Cingular was going to be constructing a new cellular tower in Scotch Plains NJ behind the firehouse at the corner of Martine Ave and Raritan Road. Anyone know if this is true?

My girlfriend lives in the area, and although she uses VZW and not Cingular I am hoping that if the tower goes up VZW will be able to install an antenna array on it. VZW has little to no coverage in that immediate area (Westfield, the Eastern part of Scotch Plains, etc) because they have simply not been able to get past the NIMBYs and install towers. If this tower goes up and VZW can get on it, things would definitely improve.

This is by the Fanwood firehouse correct? I do know Fanwood did approve a tower behind the firehouse & if they did, Scotch Plains would since they are basically 1 in the same. Did you see if the planning board has a web site with there approvals? This would have any approvals or plans to install the tower. The other option is go to the building dept. & request the information.
I will have to see if some of the people I know have heard about it as well.

According to what I heard, the tower would physically be in Scotch Plains behind the station on Martine & Raritan. I drove past there a week or so ago and didn't see any signs of construction, but I suppose it could start at any time.

I've tried going some searches online to find planning board or building department info but haven't had any luck so far. If you know of a site with this info for the area could you pass it on?

I grew up in scotch plains, parents still live there, verizon signal has always been full strength, and father used to be on the planning board. I will see what I can find out but give me a day or two..

I've been away so long from these boards!!

Thanks for the info! I hadn't done a search on this recently so I didn't know they had published anything this recent. The article mentions that they have agreed to lease space to 3 cellular providers - my guess would be Verizon Wireless, Cingular and Sprint/Nextel.

The problem seems to be worse alone Lake/Martine between the 2 Raritan Roads. If I head up Raritan Road from Lake toward Central Ave, the signal is fine... but going West from Raritan and Lake it drops right off. The new tower they are constructing should fill in that gap nicely, assuming VZW gets their act together and puts an array on the tower.

The tower we are discussing will be located on the grounds of the firehouse at the corner of Rartian Road and Martine Ave in Scotch Plains. I believe they have actually broken ground already so they may be ahead of schedule.

FWIW, I drove past this site the other day and the tower is up. Doesn't look like there are any antenna panels installed yet, but they have broken ground on the equipment buildings so hopefully they are on target for the August go-live date.

I went by this today & it's a tall tower, and it looks like they are making the building around the tower as part of the firehouse.
I am interested to see if it's Verizon or T-Mobile, I was in the college & had full coverage, so that is why I was counting out Cingular.

Supposedly there are going to be 3 wireless providors on that tower. I would be surprised if Verizon wasn't one of them. I believe Cingular/ATT service is decent in the area, so perhaps we'll see VZW, Sprint and T-Mobile.

I know when I had cingular back in 01 that coverage along terrill road was horrible, but never had any dead spots with verizon. I was in scotch plains yesterday and forgot to check it out

Coverage has improved big time with Cingular, especially with the AWE merger in this area. AWE has antenna on some of the powerline towers alongside Terrill Rd, and I don't have a problem on most of it, yes there are some poor spots, but nothing like it use to be.
And at UC College, the coverage is solid with AWE/Cingular. I am sure Verizon is going on that tower, since alot of people have complained about coverage with Verizon in that area.

Hey Fire14 - Have you noticed if they have put the antenna panels up on this tower yet? The last time I drove past (about a week ago) they were still not up.

i live around the corner and was there a few days ago and no panels yet. im just itchin to see who will be on it. im HOPING VZW will be one of them. i agree with the dead spot by shakamaxon also lamberts mill circle is completely out good luck getting a call there. I cant wait for full signal in my house if vzw gets in gear. If im right according to the local paper THE SUBURBAN NEWS VZW will be on it as they have been fighting the nimbys for quite some time GO VZW !

i wrote vzw and told them they can put one in my back yard but no one ever got back to me. :( all well the fire house is 40 seconds from my front door yeah !

Still nothing yet on this tower as of last weekend. I passed by there on the way back from my girlfriend's place and still no panels. It did look like they were not quite finished with the construction of the building around the base of the tower, so maybe when that is complete they can get the gear installed and get the tower online.

Keep in mind that if 3 or more carriers are going to use this pole, you may find that a carrier is "online" way before another ....
They may not all go online within a week of each other ... but then again, they just might!!:)

I've seen towers sit incomplete for over 6 months before. I imagine there are often a lot of problems to deal with when construction begins.
