    Hello,

A new cell tower went up recently where my cabin is in northern MN, however, at&t is the only service provider. I am a Verizon customer. how long will it take for Verizon to install their service on this tower, or how can I request that they do it? sorry if this is in a different thread someplace. Thanks for your responses....

Only Verizon knows. It could be soon, or it could be never, it is totally up to Verizon whether they want to add to this tower. However, even if they want to, they may not be able to.

You're of course assuming that AT&T will let them co-locate on that tower. Unless the tower is run by an antenna aggregator AT&T likely will say no as it will put them in an advantageous position to offer service in the area when another doesn't.

It is almost always in the carriers' long-term best interest to allow collocation of competitors. If carrier-A denies carrier-B the option to collocate, carrier-B will surely return the "favor" in some other market. Plus, remember that very often, carrier-A must represent that the tower can accommodate additional carriers in order to get the zoning approved in the first place. Zoning boards tend to have long memories...

Add to that: The true measure of competitiveness is spectrum availability, price plans, and handset choices. Whether or not Verizon is on a specific AT&T tower makes zero difference with regard to an "advantageous position". You are talking about the #1 and #2 providers, between them, locking up roughly 70% of the market. One tower here or there is a drop in the bucket. Not to mention, AndrewP did not even say he wasn't already getting adequate service from Verizon now. (?) If he is, it's not at all clear a closer tower would provide him with better service, though that can often be the case.

Thanks for your responses. Just to clarify.. I get little to no cell coverage from Verizon now in the area where this new tower went up. I know the tower was built by a third party company who leases it. AT&T just happens to be the first provider on the tower. I agree that it is in both providers best interests to co-locate but how do I find out or convince Verizon they should establish service on that tower. is there a way to make a request or inquiry? I don't see much on Verizon's web site except a customer service number. Thanks again.

Best way is just to call them up and tell them about the low coverage

Here in So. Cal I haven't heard of situations where one carrier prevented other carriers from co-locating. Sprint and Nextel have allowed anyone to co-locate on their towers over the years.
