My current contract is up and I am looking to get two new phones from Alltel. My current phone Motorola V265 is just about shot. and my wifes Motorola V262 needs a new battery, second in two years.

One of my biggest complaints is the screen brightness. I can hardly see the screen when I am in the car and not at all if out in the daylight.

I am considering the LG AX8600 for $49 after rebate for my wife. She does not like complex gadgets. She would like a phone with good reception and voice sound quality.

I am considering the new Razr2 for myself but I am wondering if the phone is really worth the $299 price. I was hoping that Alltel might drop the price a little but that does not seem likely. I am a little rough on my phone. I do not know anyone who has a new Razr2 but have several with the old Razr and most do not care for them.

Any input or suggestions appreciated .

    Thanks

The RAZR² is the best handset currently in Alltel's lineup. If you're looking for a price drop, check back after the first week in December. Usually, the closer to Christmas you get, the better the prices are. No phone is really worth $299.

The LG AX8600 is a great phone, also. If you don't want to spend $299/phone, you might consider getting an AX8600 for both your wife and yourself. It's a solid phone with good features.

I'm waiting for the price drop before I buy the new razr. I still want one so I can be cool like Moto. :)

    RAZR2 Reduced

Alltel lowered the online price of the RAZR2 to $249 today. The Alltel rep was still quoting $299 until he checked the online site. So, I bit the bullet and paid the $249 for the Razr2 and got the AX8600 for $149 with a $100 mail in rebate. Of course there was sales tax and $5.99 shipping.

I will report back on how I make out with the RAZR2 compared to the AX8600.

$249 is still high for a phone but much better than $299.

    Thanks for the input.

    :)

All you need is a SOHO to be cooler than MOTO. :browani:

Wow... that hurts. The only time I've ever carried a SoHo is when I'm forced to by my job.

Not sure how you feel about sliders but I got the Moto Rokr when it first came out and have loved it. I've never used a Razr2 so I don't know the subtle differences. But for the price difference, and it being another Moto that probably operates the same as the Razr2, it's a nice option.

For the price though, I also agree that the ax8600 is a good choice for the second line and a phone that's great for the price, though it was quite a bit more when it first came out.

Free is good, though... except in the case of the SoHo.

The new Razr2 and AX8600 were delivered and activated. :)

First impressions, the pricey Razr2 is a slick phone that feels very solid, the AX8600 is OK and doesn't feel as solid but is acceptable for a lot less money. The reception and sound quality is very good on both.

Gonna take me a while to learn all the features (and teach my wife how to use the AX8600).

First irritation with the RAZR 2 is the Speed dial has #1 preprogrammed to Voice mail which I don't want and I can't seem to change it . I have a series of speed dial numbers memorized from my old phone and don't want to have to remember to add one when I use the speed dial.

Going to buy a couple of 2GB microSD cards for the phones as soon as I find a good deal. Also have to get USB cables for computer programming as both phones use a different cable. Alltel wanted $69.95 for the USB cables (cough, cough). I will go elsewhere.

    More later.

Glad you like the razr2 so far. As for the microSD card and USB cables, you may check out Wal-Mart for them. Alltel is always high on this stuff :(

Keep us updated on it. As for me I'm going to buy one as soon as I get the money from the Alltel buy out. :)

Should be able to change that through the messages menu. Under voicemail or mailbox set up, something like that. I can't remember off the top of my head right now... it's 7:30 on a Sunday morning.

Starting to find a few stupid little things on the RAZR2.

Switches to music player on it's own even though the external keys are locked and I have to open phone to exit the music player.

I get a frequent missed call notice after calls that I make. There is no missed call but it indicates one. The phone beeps until I open the phone and clear it.

Yeah, I had that happen a few times. You're holding down the main external key long enough to unlock the rest of them. Try putting it in your pocket differently and see if that makes a difference.

I've never experienced this. You may want to turn the alerts off. This will eliminate the annoying beep.

    Overcharge on New Phone

Just got my new Alltel bill. Alltel added a $100 charge to my monthly bill for a phone upgrade for the RAZR2. I already paid the full charge of $277 for the phone which included shipping and tax on my American Express card. The price of the RAZR2 was $449 with a $200 instant savings (no mail in rebate). So now I am paying $349 plus the tax and shipping. Customer service billing says they never had the phone for sale with the $200 instant rebate and will not do anything.

I did finally get a phone call from the salesman and he says the $100 will be credited back to my account but according to his supervisor it will take a couple of days.

My 20 day satisfaction guarantee is up Thursday November 22 (Thanksging Day and customer service is probably closed). I am wondering if I should trust Alltel to give me the refund or call them tomorrow and cancel the contract extension.

I think I got or am about to be screwed by Alltel and wonder if they are just trying to get me past the 20 days so I can't cancel my contract extension.

    Any suggestions or thoughts?

They are now selling the phone for $499 with a $200 instant savings and a $100 mail in rebate for a price of $199.

    Razr2

    A little update:

Overall pretty satisfied with both the LG8600 which my wife uses and the RAZR2 which I use.

Battery life seems to be very good on both as does reception.

But that little cover for the external mini USB port where the charger attaches is a joke. There is no way that little piece of plastic is not going to break off sooner rather than later. I don't know if it is a critical issue other than to keep pocket lint or dust from getting into the USB port or a cosmetic issue. However for a phone with this high a price tag I would expect more.

Also, still having a little problem with the speakerphone turning itself on, some accidental button push combination.

the little plastic cover is mostly cosmetic but its not a bad idea to keep it on. its not nessesery but if u use the usb port alot, it could break easly. and as for batterys, just dont over charge them or leave em discharged.

I'm considering getting a RAZR2 when the price drops substantially more. I remember when the RAZR first came out... and it was hardly affordable, but now most providers are almost giving them away.
