Well I finally ended up with a smartphone. The Motorola Photon 4G. Awesome phone! Still learning how to use everything.
Re: New phone for me With me having purchased an Android phone recently, are all the mods using Android phones now?
Re: New phone for me Well I've been trying to convince Matt to come back to Sprint and to get an android phone but it hasn't worked yet.
Re: New phone for me I suspect the earliest I would return to Sprint would be in 2013. It will be next to impossible to get my girlfriend to switch unless she starts hating AT&T as much as she did Sprint. So far AT&T hasn't blown us away, but they haven't done anything to upset us yet either.
Re: New phone for me Nice looking phone with great specs, similar to my Atrix. So Joe, when are you moving on to an Android or is another OS your choice.?
Re: New phone for me Yeah, the Atrix and the Inspire seemed pretty similar. The deciding factor for me was the on screen keyboard on the Inspire was more accurate with my large fingers.
The reason I went for this when I did was to beat the policy changes that Sprint was about to enact. By activating this phone before 10/2 I was able to qualify for another phone in only 11 months (9/1/12).
Re: New phone for me Yeah I remember the problems you had with some of those Samsungs. They generally seem to have more bugs than other manufacturers and take longer to fix them.
Why not the Bionic? Why a Samy? Just curious. Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.4; en-us; MB860 Build/4.5.91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1
Re: New phone for me Not a good idea IMHO. Sammy has some nice hardware but they have some serious issues. And it seems to be much worse on CDMA. I loved my Vibrant, and could handle the issues it had. But I went through three Epics on Sprint. All had problems with RF and data. And now with VZ I will be on my third Charge. With the Charge it's data & memory issues. Also the Galaxy S II for Sprint seems to be having data issues. Just pick anything other then Sammy (or LG ) right now
I'm not sure how to do that yet. Still learning my phone and android. Remember this is my first smartphone ever.
Happy to help a new user! Go to the android market and do a search for "speedtest.net" and download the app called speedtest.net by ookla. Here is the link to the market. You should be able to log into your google account and install it remotely. https://market.android.com/details?id=org.zwanoo.android.speedtest&hl=en Run the app and click begin test. Report back! Either just tell us the result, or give us the result URL from the results tab.
I did download the app yesterday but wasn't sure how to post the results on a screenshot. Ok here are my first two results: From my home wifi DSL connection: 10/5/11 6:02PM 1269 kbps 367 kbps 63 ms From my local tower using EvdoA: 10/6/11 12:26PM 1793 kbps 913 kbps 88 ms I will try 4G later when I am near a tower that has it.
Funny but I don't even know what's considered slow or fast. But my DSL connection is the basic one. It gets the job done for what I need and is only $25/month. I guess no need to keep using wifi at home when EVDO is faster!
No kidding! If I had EVDO speeds like that, I might still have Sprint! In contrast to Larry's 1700kbps download speed on EVDO, the fastest I ever saw was just under 1400 if I am not mistaken. Typically I would be in the 300-500 range. Occasionally under 100.
I will try from other towers just to see how consistent they are when I get some time. But at least the one I use the most seems to have good speed.
With that phone being motorola, you can probably even dig into field test and see how many users are on the EVDO channels. With EVDO, they claim average speeds of 300-700kbps. A good site will feed you a minimum of 1000kbps. That is the speed at which most stuff will work without hiccups. The most you will ever see is really 2500kbps, and that is RARE. Anything dipping below 400kbps is a problem. My typical Speeds in Michigan and NYC were between 50-200kbps, which can be classified as 1x speeds.
Ok I couldn't resist. Got close to my nearest 4G tower and ran a test. 6560 kbps, 1437 kbps, 101 ms. Oddly it says 'network: Unknown, Server: Tijuana even though it is Clearwire Wimax for sure. What's up with that?
Server refers to the server that you are using to do the speed test. They try to localize you and run the download/upload tests off of the nearest server. That is not displaying your ISP.
