Hello I live in Citrus County Florida and was wondering what cell phone providers I should get that will work in this area. I had Verizon's for a time and had really poor service. Never was able to use the phone around here since the cell towers were too far from me. Resulting in lost calls or not even being able to make a phone call. Want to get one again but I don't want to get a phone with a provider that offers poor service. Also thinking too, if I get a phone that works in my area but not when I'm on the road. Thanks.

Yes, It was a Samsung model. I think it was a 920. Been about a year since it was running. Was told by Verizon's that it wasn't the case of the phone, rather that it was due to not enough cell towers in my area. Has a lot of dropped calls and even more calls that I couldn't make.
I need to get a phone as soon as possible as I'm taking care of my Mother and want to have a phone on hand in case of an emergency. When I would get calls and it wouldn't ring to me it would be placed on an aswering machine and I wouldn't be able to get these calls until I was in a good area.

You might want to check out Cingular Wireless. Just remember to check their maps carefully as with any wireless provider they don't have coverage everywhere. By the way don't even consider T-Mobile I checked out their coverage in your area using the personal coverage check website they have and T-Mobile looks to be quite poor in your area. You also should check out ALLTEL if they have service in your area, generally where ALLTEL has service in florida they are very good. Sprint PCS also might worth be checking into as well according to their website it looks like they cover your area well.

Try asking your friends/family/neighbours in the area who their carriers are & how their coverage is .

Thanks for the info. I went with Alltel and got a Motorola V710. Seems to give me good coverage. They showed me a map of the US and from what it showed I should have good coverage too. After using Verizon's :banghead: and not getting anywhere with them I was leary about getting wireless again. I hope this doesn't turn out to be another horror story. :) I Will be looking on this site for any advise on getting different ringtones for this model. So this thread might not be the place to ask this question. Thanks again to everyone for your help.

You were smart to get a phone that has the ability to accesss analog networks. That may have been a weakness in your Samsung with Verizon.

Never forget that with any wireless plan and contract you have 15 days to cancel with no obligation. The only thing you would have to pay is for airtime used. If you have serious problems with no solutions from your provider say "addios!"

Verizon and Alltel roam free on eachother in Florida. Alltel is a cellular provider in Fl and Verizon is a PCS provider in Fl.

Thanks for the Info. I went to a cell phone store called Charles Pope Cellular and they sell Alltel, and Cingular together. They showed me the maps of the areas of both Florida and the US. According to the maps they showed me Alltel had less roaming or pits. Your map looks pretty solid, not at all like the one I was shown! After having Verizon in this area and being in a "Pit" like the way they called it I'm not wanting to do the same thing all over again. I have to this coming Wednesday to change my mind and that's not much time. Looking for the best deal and best provider in my area and if I do any traveling wouldn't have to worry about roaming. :)

I stand by my recommendation: go with the carrier that gives you the ability to roam on analog networks.

Does'nt his Original VZW phone have analog mode?
VZW phones usually have Analog Mode except the
new models that are coming out lately.

Agreed. Cingular is GSM-only, and while coverage looks good throughout Florida, if you ever travel to rural areas in many other states you won't have coverage at all. At least with Alltel and Verizon you have analog roaming capability on some phones, and that's good to have, at least for emergencies.

If you do end up with a GSM-only phone (Cingular or T-Mobile,) I highly recommend that you carry an old, inactive, phone that does have analog-roaming capability when you travel rural areas. At least you will be able to use that phone for a "911" call.

Cingular Wireless Continues to Expand Its South Florida Network
Friday May 6, 1:38 pm ET
Plans to Invest More Than $200 Million in 2005

BOCA RATON, Fla., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The nation's largest wireless voice and data network is getting larger in Florida. Cingular Wireless plans to invest more than $200 million in its South Florida network integrating the Cingular and AT&T Wireless networks; increasing coverage and capacity; building new sites; adding portable generators and back-up batteries; and offering enhanced new features.
"High-quality coverage wherever you go - that's our goal," said Rich Guidotti, vice president and general manager of Cingular Wireless South Florida. "In 2005, we are continuing to make a huge investment in technology in Florida delivering a network that is growing bigger and more powerful every day."

Of the approximately 50 cell sites to be added statewide in 2005, 16 are being turned on in Cingular's South Florida market, which covers Key West to Vero Beach.

Year-to-date, Cingular has turned on three new cell sites in the South Florida market improving coverage in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties. Specific enhancements include:

-- A new site on Hypoluxo Road in Lantana is providing enhanced coverage
    along Hypoluxo Road at I-95.
-- Coverage in the northern part of downtown Miami along I-395 is being
boosted by a new site located on Northeast 1st Avenue.
-- A new site on the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami is improving coverage
along the causeway and in Virginia Key

Thanks for the info AL904a, I'm off to the cell store now to ask some more questions befor my 15 days are up. I do have my old Samsugn phone that has been not active for about a year. I tried making a call to update my calling area and Verizon didn't let the phone call go through. Did't want to try calling 911 because it wasn't an emergency. Will ask about what you said in this post to them. May be a good idea to have this phone for such a case that you point out! Will advise later on my results! Thank you everyone.

Actually, your Verizon phone should have roamed on Alltel, since Verizon and Alltel have roaming agreements with each other throughout the state.
If your new Alltel phone works fine, then keep it, Alltel usually serves areas they cover very well, and they will roam outside your Home area if you ever have to.
The V710 was a great choice you made-you won't regret Alltel and the V710 if your coverage is good.

Sorry Andy, My "Samsung N150" under Verizon was deader then a doornail. At most all I had was 1 bar. I couldn't even call Verizon customer service to complain. :censored: Even though they kept on saying they never stop working for me. When my contract was up, I was gone and glad. Verizon here in my area does not have a good reputation. Thanks for your help just the same!

So far so good. I have 5 bars every time I look at the phone. There is a Alltel office not far from me if I need to have any service. Verizon's was in another town about an hours drive from me. I like my phone... Still getting to know about all of it's functions that come up with it. My old Samsung N150 phone had no bells or whistles. They came out with Brew shortly after I got the phone and I couldn't replace it without it costing me big bucks. So I would say now I am happy with what I got. Now looking for ringtones for my Alltel Motorola V710. :)

I would try Cingular or Alltel, kind of odd that your Verizon phone did not roam on to Alltel though.

If the phone could get a signal from Verizon, why would it switch to roam? If I had to guess, I would say that the signal was just strong enough that the phone would lock on and would not roam.

The OP said that at most he had one bar-If you make a call with a Verizon phone and the signal isn't strong enough, the phone would automatically switch to Extended Network after trying to get the call through on the VZW network first.
Anyhow, it didn't work out for him, still strange, but I hope Alltel keeps working for you, they generally do great in the areas they cover! :D

Yes I called Verizon's plenty of times to say I loss calls and could not make calls when the phone was on. even when I called Verizon Customer support from the cell phone I got Alltel!! Their only remark to me was to say that the nearest cell tower was too far from me and that I was considered to be what they calles a Pit Area for no service. They kept promising that they would work on my issue but never did. Ask anybody from Citrus County Florida who uses a cell phone what they think of Verizon you won't get a good answer. Even the private companies that sell cell phones quit carrying Verizon because of all the problems. I bar just does not cut it when you need a phone!

    I believe you.
First of all there's coverage in an area
    because Cell carriers built Towers.
A pit area is a dead zone where there's no
coverage due to No Tower in the area.

You having gotten Alltel when trying to call VZW customer care from you phone means that you were roaming on Alltel, and, I guess at least at that time, both VZW and Alltel didn't serve your area well...I guess Alltel added a tower nearby, might VZW have done that same thing?
As I said, I'm glad Alltel is working out for you; best of luck

Nope, This is a Case of
VZW not wanting to Pay Roaming to ALLTEL.
He's VZW phone won't allow Him to Make a Call,
which means it was taken out of the PRL.
Even though there's a Useable Signal present.

I agree with that, it did sound like VRW didn't care about some of there customers in less populated areas. I think the graffic art that I posted on: 05-09-2005, 1:14 PM says it all! Again to everyone that have made a post here, Thanks. I'm with Alltel and the phone is working! Now I will be looking at how to make my own ringtones for my phone. I did make an inquire in the Thread for Ringtones too. I know that this is not the proper place. Thanmks again! :D
