Do you think the coming split of Netflix for streaming and Qwikster for DVDs by mail is a smart move?

I think it was handled poorly, with no consideration for existing members. I ended up dropping the DVD's by mail and only keeping the streaming movies. Since they no longer have new releases on DVD, we've ended up picking them up at RedBox anyway.

I think the move to charge for each service was dumb, and the split just confirms it for me. I froze my account because of my move, and will more then likely cancel it before the freeze ends. For me their are a lot of better services for the same price or cheaper and give me more choices now.

Actually, if you really look there's really nothing that does as well as Netflix/Qwikster combination. Blockbuster requires that you be a Dish Network subscriber to use their streaming service.

As for splitting the services I've read on more than one comment in other blogs etc. that they think they're doing it partly so they can easily separate the companies should they decide they want to jettison/sell the DVDs by mail service. Netflix wants the DVD by mail service to die. Netflix major cost is paying the USPS to deliver all their postage paid envelopes. Delivery by broadband costs them far less. Even if Netflix can get newer movies and TV shows there's something else to deal with: the pipes that deliver the product. Lots of broadband has decided that after so many years of all you can eat broadband they're now going to sell you broadband that's metered and if you go over your allotted amount you'll pay extra for going over.

We canceled our streaming and are doing mail DVDs only now. Streaming is pretty worthless until they can get newer movies on there. If we didn't have cable/DirecTV I could see the appeal of the streaming service, however.

Yes, it is obvious that Netflix wants the mail order way to die, but people like us that went mail-only also will reduce the numbers on their streaming service, which should allow them to get lower rates in their negotiations with various studios.

I am on the fence with this one, and not sure what path I will take.
I don't have cable tv, so Netflix has served me well. I may ditch the mail order and just keep streaming. If it makes sense, I am a minimalist, it bugs me to have two seperate bills in my account. I like to keep things neat and orderly.

A big problem with the streaming service is the studios who do not want to let their product go and want what is the most money beneficial scheme for them. Until Netflix can get recent movies and the studios cooperate streaming's always going to be second rate. The truth about media is that there's lots and lots of stuff that's not available on streaming so if you're into a certain genre of stuff DVD is your only choice.

And as if to confirm that Qwikster was a dumb move, Netflix says there will be no Qwikster :D

Netflix is quickly becoming a joke. And it is all self-inflicted.

It seems as if Reed Hastings the CEO keeps digging himself deeper holes :) Every press release he makes sounds like another "oops" as if he or the higher ups at Netflix didn't really give it serious thought before they decided to do something. Not very encouraging is it?
