I have cell 1 and their service is (to me) getting worse. I want to try T-Mobile,Nextel or Verizon but not sure of their service quality.Voicestream told me their service would be too spotty for me. I will be using it in Dutchess,Ulster and Orange counties in NY.Any suggestions on what service and cell phones to choose? I need two lines so family plans may be good way to go also.[IMG]

Well, I'm a bit biased because I work for Cingular, but:

If you say you have cell 1 (cellular one, I'm guessing), it would be my guess that you have an old phone and activated under cellular one and are now with Cingular. Might be worth checking out some of their newer stuff to see if it works better for you, your service could just be getting spotty b/c the phone's starting to go.

Other than that, I'm not particularly sure about the areas you need service in. T-mo would definitely be too spotty, so realistically the only place to look is Verizon. I've heard that Verizon has some severe dead spots around NY state too, though, so..it's kinda a mess..

figured I'd try though. Best thing is, get a phone from a provider, find out what their return policy is, and go to the places you need to use it to see how the service is, keeping the phone within return limits (length of time/amt. of use).

    Hi ....

I have Verizon service and I live in Dutchess County NY ...I haven't had ANY problems with service in Dutchess or Orange. Of course, you still get a couple "non"-service areas like inside the Galleria Mall (Filenes) in Poughkeepsie. I'm sure that's the case with every phone carrier. Now, as for Ulster County, the ONLY problem I've had is around New Paltz, specifically around the State campus @ New Paltz (very weak signal). I think Verizon OR Cellular One would be your best bet in the area. Verizon has a great "family share" plan ....Good luck ....

Doesn't EVERY carrier have a 15 day return policy???

whether they tell you about it or not?

I've been using ATT digital one around Rhinebeck and Staatsburg with ok coverage, my friend's Verizon phone doesn't work where mine does. You may have trouble signing up for ATT in upstate NY though, since they don't have their own coverage.

I'm going to side with some of those who recommend Cingular. Your equipment is probably old and newer equipment may improve your customer experience. Stay with the folks you are with, and you get to keep your number..

Since when do Dutchess and Orange Counties fall under "Upstate New York" category? I'm not surprised to hear that though. To most New Yorkers, the state line stops right after Westchester County and way before Albany...what a shame.

I live in Dutchess and I always considered myself dwelling in "Upstate, NY". I guess I just refer Dutchess as "Upstate" because if you talk to anyone who hears that you're from New York, they automatically assume you're from NYC. It's easier for me just to refer anything North of Westchester as "upstate"...

No, I understand, it's a very common assumption. I guess that is why many NYC politicians 'ignore' upstate new york..we don't mean squat to them. peace!
