Re: Need help selecting Verizon smartphone. Update on the OP. Final decision was to do nothing. Getting involved with an expensive data plan was too overwhelming for my friend. Any decision is postponed for the time being. Thanks for all the input from you guys (and gals)
Re: Need help selecting Verizon smartphone. Normally, I would agree with you on having an actual physical keyboard. It was the one thing that concerned me about the Droid X. Surprisingly, the virtual keyboard (especially on the Droid X) is amazing. With Swype available and the large size of the phone, the virtual keyboard is remarkably easy to type with, and a physical keyboard would be more of a nuisance and redundant on it. It does take some getting used to, and the learning curve was a lot less than I thought it would be I make about as many mistakes on the virtual keyboard as on regular keyboards (on the Voyager and T-Mobile MDA). It's worth a try before completely writing the virtual keyboard off. Though you may not change your mind, it wouldn't hurt to give it a chance for the heck of it.
D I will speak up for my buddy Joe . He did give it a try, he had the iPhone 3g for a little over a month before he gave up and went back to BB and hasn't looked back since. As for me, it was easier than I tholught it would be. I make more mistakes by allowing word completion to take over than mis typing. I could never get used to Swype, instead I have a custom modified HTC keyboard that I really like although the default one is okay as well. Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1-update1; en-ca; SonyEricssonX10a Build/2.1.A.0.435) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17
Hardware keyboard till death for me. I am totally incapable to typing and walking on a touchscreen keyboard, but I can usually get a text out with a real keyboard.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that... I guess it's been so long, it slipped my mind...:O True, it isn't for everybody... For me, the 4.3 inch screen on the Droid X makes all the difference. Things aren't so scrunched together as on smaller phones, though I found the iPhone keyboard pretty easy (in landscape mode AND after getting used to it) in my past experience with it, even though the screen isn't as big as the DX.
