    Hello,

I just suscribed this forum. I never had a cell phone and now want to have two cell phones (me and my young son). As the phones will be used for the emergency purpose such as pick-up call from school, I guess we will be a light user (not more than 300 minutes). And we don't need fancy options. Call and text messaging may suffice. I live in Nassau, NY and I need to talk to my son in Suffolk, NY.

    (1) Would you recommend cell phones (and a plan) that fit my situation the best?
    (2) Where should I buy the phones (and plan)?
    (3) By the way, is it a better idea to buy GSM phones, then buy a plan seperately than to buy both phones and plan from a carrier? Would you tell me pros and cons of buying GSM phones in my situation?

Thank you very much for your advice.

Hello, and welcome to Wireless Advisor. I also live in Nassau County.

Any phone with any carrier will work well on long island. I have found that T-mobile is putting many towers up in the nassau area. But if you want already well established service, go with verizon. But for you, since your a low minutes user, go with whatever is the cheapest. All carriers work well on the south shore, while Verizon is the best up north.

I am on the North Shore in Glen Head and TMO coverage is good as I am near the TMO cell site, coverage over towards Sea Cliff and through the Brookville's is terrible. On the other hand, I have found TMO coverage to be continous once you go south to Jericho Turnpike so that may apply to you. This is not to imply there is no coverage up here, it is just that the terrain is hillier and there are fewer cell sites than in the middle or south. When I go over to my old neighborhood in East Norwich, I have no TMO service and that is a pretty well populated area now.

If you are looking to save money you cannot beat TMO's plans. If you want to go with single lines you can get 300 minutes a month for $29.95 + tax (total around $37.60 in Nassau). Alternately you could look at one of the family plans. Finally if you are not going to use alot of minutes, you can pay $100 per line for 1000 prepaid minutes good for a year (around $93 if you buy the minutes through cheapphonecards.com).

Make sure you try the carrier's trial period , & use the fone in local areas you may travel around to, indoors & out.
You may find that "right now" you think you aren't going to use it much ,
but 6 or 9, or 16 months from now .........:)
.. That's why I reccomend choosing based on overall coverage, VZW, as other posters stated they have the best established service on Long island, better than T-Mbl overall, & you will find that if you travel into places like Westchester, Putnam, & some counties of NJ, they are also ahead of the pack. CING I would also reccomend over T_Mbl or Sprint for the same reasons.
A VZW family plan, which includes 2 fones & numbers, should be within $5 to $10 of the other carrier's plans mentioned, & give you unlimited nites, weekends, unlim calls to the other fones, & any other VZW fones, in addition to the plans mins.

How about Virgin Mobile? Since they use the Sprint Network and you have Sprint, what's your feel for their coverage for the OP?

I do agree with MeatChicken that it may be cheaper to go with a regular share plan though, you can get some good deals with all of the carriers and have the minutes to cover you for those "Non-Emergency" calls, that you will start doing after having the phones a while.
