I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Verizon Wireless in Lincoln, Nebraska (including the outskirts of Lincoln), Omaha, Nebraska, and the corridor between both cities on I-80?

Also, does anyone know how Verizon is specifically on the several locations of the campuses at UNL?

The reason I ask is because I will be going there most likely this summer with my family to help my sister pick out an apartment since she will most likely be going to UNL for her doctorate in English once she makes her a final decision this week. We will also be having a mini vacation since none of us has ever been to Nebraska.

    Thanks for anyone's help.

I think I've attached the coverage map from the VZW website for the Lincoln/Omaha area. The yellow is Verizon Covewrage and the dark gold typ color id digital roaming or extended network. You should be OK in the gold though seeing that you have an AC2 family share package. Hope this helps...if it doesn't..you can go to verizonwireless.com and look for the coverage locator icon. if you dont find it send me a pm and I'll send you the link!!

Thanks for the reply Cailiff04. It looks like we should have coverage. Now hopefully someone that either lives there or has been to the areas I am interested in can back Verizon's map up.

Hi Gamer, long time. :) . I just drove through that area and back on our way to the Sandhill Crane Sanctuary. Both my Verizon & Cingular phones had great coverage. We got out at Lincoln to have lunch and the coverage was very good, the rest of the experience was on I80 but no coverage problem in the corridor between Omaha & Lincoln.

    Hope this helps. :)

I a few months ago I was able to make a call and get a soft handoff from the VZW cellular network (Omaha) to the PCS network (Lincoln)

HA, I don't think I've ever heard anyone use 'vacation' and 'Nebraska' in the same sentence. Prepare to be amazed! :)

I live in Omaha and use VZW for work and Alltel for personal. Both VZW and Alltel have excellent coverage in Omaha; they've been around the longest and have the best buildout. Coverage on I80 should be constant as well.

I have not used my VZW phone a lot in Lincoln, however, so I can't give you a lot of details, but just know that VZW has only been up & running in Lincoln for maybe a year now. They just picked up the pieces of Qwest's old network in that area, and although it looks like they've utilized many of the old sites, they have also done a pretty good job of adding a few new ones very recently. I know of several cell sites very near to both the city & east campuses so I would expect good coverage there as well.

    Have a good trip!

Erik, You will need to give us a coverage report of your findings when you come back. Looking at coverage maps it looks like Verizon does pretty well within the city limits, but ALLTEL certainly has the better rural coverage.

Was in the areas over Christmas. Friends with VZW seemed to be fine. I use Alltel and was fine. In the rural areas, the Alltel did work better, and around eastern areas of Omaha, including the airport, Alltel was much better. At the airport, VZW was lucky to get 1 bar. But, overall both did fine!

Well, like I said it will be a "mini vacation" since the main reason is to check out UNL and find an apartment for my sister.

Thanks for the personal experience with Verizon and Alltel.

Andy, thanks for the break down. I will definitely post a coverage report when I get back. I will also hopefully post a few times on WA with my phone. Too bad Lincoln does not have V Cast. At least Omaha has it.

Interesting. Thanks for the comparison. What type of phone did your friends have? I will have to see how my phone behaves when I get there.
