My uncle and cousin couldn't be happier. They recently moved to my area from Las Vegas, to within a mile of me with their Sprint service, and were very unhappy with the Sprint signal, being so close to the interstate. They turned to me for help, as they didn't want to go another year with their contract. So I put both of their old Samsung phones on roaming only for about the last 3 months, and they roamed on Alltel nonstop. Well they just got the disconnection letter last week, and as of today, their phones can not make or receive calls. ... They are getting transferred to Verizon, and they get to keep their Las Vegas number. I'm glad I was able to help them, based on what I've learned on WirelessAdvisor.
Sounds like all is well that ends well! But I guess there's no truth to the rumor that Sprint's roaming agreement with alltel is so low-cost that they won't terminate subscribers that roam excessively on alltel.
Well I don't blame Sprint for wanting to cancel someone roaming 100% of the time. Why would they want to lose money on a customer? It's rare to get booted for excessive roaming but it does happen once in a while with the most extreme cases.
It's funny because I could roam alot more, (and I do) in alot more places on more carriers. I'm on the phone alot more than anyone else in my family, and 40% of my calls on average are forced roaming. Sprint's agreement with Alltel is dirt cheap, so why is this too "expensive" for them? I guess Sprint is watching every single penny they have these days.
I agree with them having to keep spending money on roaming when there is no need to, but it's the opposite with Alltel. Alltel customers that move to non-Alltel markets will likely roam on Sprint 100% and Alltel doesn't care, and so Sprint gets that money back. There is a roaming policy with Alltel, but rarely enforced, and they also don't want to make customers upset, and sometimes there is a need to roam. It works both ways in other words.
By the time I thought about the Airave idea for them it was too late anyway. We thought about it, it would've worked for them somewhat, but they are not always home when on the phone, they spend time here as well. So their phone was always left on roaming, everywhere they went. They are former (Vegas) Verizon customers, and I think they'll be happier here on Verizon.
