I've had my iPhone 5 (slate) since last October (last week of).
Got a new one at the Apple store today!

I've noticed since the beginning, for photos taken at an angle with the sun, a black spot appearing near the left had side of the photos. I've read it on forums, that it was an artifact of the sapphire window and shooting into the sun. It occurred rarely, and didn't bother me too much.

Lately, I've noticed it more...and last night I saw it with room light on a white background. Researching around, I figured it was dust...and to make it harder to notice, it only occurred in horizontal camera mode...and of courses with normal photos, one would not see it at all. Solution was to replace it or one person said in-store, the 'genius' was able to blow the dust away in the back room. They wouldn't say in the store what it was.

So I went to the Apple store in the Mall...made an appt last night, and backed up with iTunes and with iCloud.

Got there a 15 min early, big line, but I had an appt and it was on time. Apple tech came over and said 'what's up?'. I barely finished the 3rd sentence of my story and she said, 'unfortunately, the only solution is to replace the whole unit'. Less then 3 minutes later, she returned with a new iPhone 5 and said if I wish to restore via the iCloud or at home with iTunes. Let's do iCloud.

So she set it up, left me on my own and about 10 minutes later the phone restarted and settings restored. The apps and photos were slowly being brought back too, but I could see that would take a while. I checked the new camera out, all was good. As I had lunch, it continued to restore, and I entered passwords when asked, sponging off whatever wifi I could get. I drove home, and its finishing the restore right now.

My old iPhone had been dropped 3 times, and although in good condition, it has a few dings on the black bevel...so now I have a new shiny iPhone 5 in Slate...and it cost me zero! Happy!!! :)

Was okay to stand around sponging off Apple's wifi while the phone restored. Watched all the pretty ladies in the store, and I happened to wear a blue shirt like the other Apple staff, so a few people asked me for help :). But no one threw me any money...too bad...I would have sold them Apple stuff for 1/2 price, if they didn't need a receipt or bag and paid cash :(

Once again, a very fast and pleasant experience with Apple staff and service.

Glad you had a good experience. IIRC your iPhone was unlocked, so you have to get the new one unlocked, correct?

That was something I thought about while driving to the Apple Store. I didn't wish to ruffle any feathers by saying that I was turning in an unlocked phone and wish to get the same kind returned...considering that ATT didn't unlock it.

So I'm pretty certain the new one is locked...but haven't checked it out yet.

Besides it was cheap to unlock the old one and I really have no need for an unlocked phone...but I will do it anyways for $5 to $20.

The new condition of the replacement phone plus my year's remaining warranty/repair under AppleCare+ really increased the value of the phone...if I decide to sell it.

There is a pretty good chance that I will take advantage of my wife's upgrade in Sept and give her my iPhone 5 and pick up a 5S...unless she decides that she likes the colorful 5C series.

Or I may just wait and let my upgrade be ready for the radical 6 ;)

Here is an example of the black dot or dust I would see on my photos. Left side, middle on vertical dimension. [IMG]

I see the black dot. And being a tad OCD. That would drive me nuts. :D
