Pre orders went live today for the iPad Air 2. I ordered the Gold 128GB WiFi + Cellular version, which is now in the processing stage. I'll be reviewing this model shortly after it arrives from Apple. I currently own the first generation Air, so my comparison will be based off of that model.
My iPad Air 2 finally went into preparing to ship status around 1PM today, so I should have it by Friday.
I received my iPad Air 2 Cellular Gold 128GB model this afternoon as promised by Apple. Out of the box I could tell the difference in reduced weight VS my iPad Air 1. I still can't get over just how thin the Air 2 is now..... The restore process was really quick with this one as it only took about 2 hours to load my apps, videos and pictures. As far as speed goes I really didn't notice how much faster it is compared to the iPad Air 1 until after the restore process was completed. The speed of web browsing is amazing and it's great to now be able to load up multiple tabs within the browser at a time and not one of them refresh or crash on me.... The new Touch ID for the iPad works well out of the box. I set up 4 fingers and they all unlock my Air 2 on the first try....... The reduce glare screen is really nice for reading in direct sunlight as tested through iBooks. I noticed that the screen on my Air 2 is a much brighter White with more natural color tones compared to the iPad Air 1. Also, the Black text seems more Bold to me which is nicer when reading and browsing in Safari........ The Volume on the Air 2 is much louder than my Air 1 and almost feels like surround sound when watching a Movie within NetFlix. I see a lot of talk on the web about vibration and so far I can honestly say it is no different than my Air 1 and certainly not distracting in the least when watching videos.... As far as the WiFi speed goes it doesn't seem to be any different than my Air 1. However, the improved LTE speed on AT&T's network is truly remarkable. This thing is lightning quick and if I still had an unlimited iPad data plan I would be using LTE over my WiFi connection all the time...... As far as the camera goes, I haven't taken any picture as yet, but considering the camera is now 8MP, I believe the pictures will be much improved. That's about it for the short time that I've used my Air 2, so I'll update this review as I go along. The pictures of the Gold do not do it justice as the new Gold color on the iPad really is sharp looking. Sent from my Cellular Gold iPad Air 2 using Tapatalk.
Great review Eileen, everything appears to be a positive. Glad you are enjoying it. Looking forward to more. Sent from my iPad Air using Tapatalk
I ordered this Crystal Clear back cover for my Air 2 from Amazon today. With my Prime 2 day free shipping I should have it by Monday or Tuesday. I don't need a large case for it as I used a thin case on my old iPad Air and never dropped it. If something does happen I can always use the Apple Care + that I purchased for it.
A few more things: Battery life: all I can say is WOW! Considering the battery on the Air 2 is smaller than that of the original Air, I was able to get over 12 hours of usage out of the very first charge. That is only 30min less than I got out of my first Air and also 2 hours more than what Apple states that it will get. Camera: for a tablet with a 8MP camera, the iPad Air 2 is able to capture some pretty impressive pictures. These are a few pics that I took outside with it today while enjoying the nice Fall weather.
Cellular LTE Data:Overall, the whole web browsing experience has been much improved over my Air 1, due in part to the increased LTE performance, better processor and 2GB of RAM... I was using AT&T but decided to take advantage of T-Mobiles 200MB of free data offering on the iPad again. I did have to delete the old account that I had on my first Air and insert a new SIM card in my Air 2 first in order to get it, though. The Air 2 does come with an Apple SIM preinstalled but I decided not to use it at this time... LTE data speeds using T-Mobiles network is faster than lightning and my main reason for not using AT&T network at this time....
I just traded in my Air for the Air 2, yesterday. I did it mostly for the additional memory of 64 vs 32. It is a wifi only model, and BB had/has a great deal going where I only paid $250+tax out of pocket with trade. I haven't had much time to play with it yet but the bump in speed is noticeable. Final thoughts: I ended up returning my iPad Air 2 yesterday after 18 days. My first 2 weeks with it were good, until the iOS 8 issues started happening; Safari Freezes at least 1 time a day, going to a new link within a site would randomly cause Safari to crash. I had this same issue with my original iPad Air and refuse to put up with it again on a brand new device that I set up as new to avoid any issues from being carried over again to the new Air 2. One other issue was after one week my new Air 2 stopped reading my fingerprints and always asked me for my code. I deleted them all once and set them up again and the same thing happened again! What the heck. The fingerprint Touch ID is the main new feature on the Air 2 and I couldn't get it to work all the time as it should. I have no problems with the Touch ID on my iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. Could be either a hardware or OS issue. The 2nd and final reason for returning it is that I believe the new Air is actually too thin which is the reason for the awful vibration issue. At first I didn't think too much of it as I was using it with a old thick case from my first Air. However, after switching to a very thin back cover only and downloading music on it, I began to see what others were complaining about. It isn't the vibration sound that's annoying, it's the actual vibration itself that you feel while holding the device. I found that it was too distracting when listening to my music and watching a movie on NetFix with the Air 2 propped up on my knees when I'm sitting up in my lounge chair or in bed at night. I believe the vibration issue is due to the thin size of the Air 2 and therefore can not be corrected with a OS update. I refuse to use a thick case on such a nice looking device just to avoid this problem. It could of just been a hardware issue with my particular Air 2, but because of all the other reports on this same issues with others and not wanting to wait weeks or even months for Apple to come up with a fix for my OS related freeze and crash issues that began, I thought it best to return my Air 2. I still have my original Air 1 that I can use, however, my new iPhone 6 Plus with its bright large screen is actually all I really need right now. I might even try the new Mini 3 out at some point.... Sent from my 128GB iPhone 6 Plus using Tapatalk.
That's a shame. My wife replaced her first-gen iPad Mini with a 64gig Air 2. She hadn’t mentioned any of those issues so I just asked and she said that hers has been working great. Her TouchID still works fine and no issues with Safari. Her only complaint is that the battery life seems to be less than her iPad Mini 1 that it replaced. She doesn’t use it for music or watching anything longer than an occasional web video, so she may not notice the vibration thing. Is it only when you have the volume turned up louder than the previous models went? I’ve been noticing issues with Safari on all of my devices that all seem to be related to javascript triggered content loading. I identified that the new “Don’t ask me for website notifications” setting in Safari on the desktop caused the worst of them, but some sites still get tripped up from time to time. Especially Google with their new auto-loading while tying approach. Also, there were reports of a bad batch of 128gb memory modules in iPhones. I note that yours was 128gb. I wonder if that's related? —Josh
Hi Josh, Thanks. I thought about the 128GB storage being the cause, however, both my iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are 128GB and they are fine. My 6 Plus did reboot one time in the 3 weeks that I've used it which I attribute to a iOS 8 issue since other models have had this happen since the update as well. As I said, I didn't notice the vibration issue as much until I switched to the thinner case and actually started holding it while I was watching a movie on. I usually kept the volume on medium, unless I was trying to hear something over what my kids had going on in the background, lol. I would say for my own needs coming from the Air 1, the Air 2 other than a few changes and being slightly faster wasn't worth the $850. upgrade price. Since getting the iPhone Plus I seem to primarily be using that more anyway. That's why I'm thinking that maybe something smaller like the Mini 3 might fit my in between use better than a large tablet like the Air. Most of my use on a Tablet is Safari anyway. As far as battery life, I usually got between 10 - 12 hours out of a charge which wasn't bad imho. Sent from my 128GB iPhone 6 Plus using Tapatalk.
My two cents: Eileen, sorry to hear that you had to return yours. I agree that the Air to Air 2 isn't worth that many headaches. I went through my Air crashing and closing out apps as well and put up with it for three months until an update fixed it. I was running out of storage with my 32 Air and that's the primary factor in my going to the Air 2, all the other speed bumps are a plus but not a must. Josh, glad to hear she is not having the same problems. The vibration is there and is quite strong but I am guessing with TPU cover she has, it dampens it. I only have a Smart Cover on so the back is bare. If I ever get my TPU case I will see if it makes a difference. Mine has behaved reasonably well, here are some issues I have: 1. The screen turned black in the middle of my doing something once and I had to do a hard reset to bring it back to life. Interestingly the same thing happened to my phone once and I am guessing it's from my restoring both devices from backup. Knock on wood it hasn't happened since. 2. I keep losing my multi tasking gesture and have to flip the switch off and on and it will work for awhile. This seems to me an ongoing issue and one I am hoping is software related and will be taken care of soon. The battery life is about an hour or so less than my Air but still tolerable. The battery life had decreased considerably on the Air recently and that was a bit disappointing. I had the iPad 2 for 3 years with no noticeable change in battery life. I find the sounds to be rather muted, the power off click is hardly noticeable unless I am listening for it. All in all I sm happy with it and plan to keep using it.
Upset to hear about your troubles. The 5.5" iP6+ is a good size and I can see how it would displace the need for an iPad (at least the mini). I actually like the iP6+ and it feels okay in my hand. I just know it would be impractical to carry around- I probably drop it. I'm feeling a bit the same. The 4.7" iP6 is doing well, and I wonder why I'm not using my mini as much anymore. I might trade in for the larger retina iPad..so not happy hear of these problems. I'd say in general, the 8.1 has had more problems then other releases. On all my devices sometimes the touch screen is unresponsive, and there are crashes more frequently (coming from near zero before). Not a big deal, but it is unsettling. I finally learned that I cannot do AirDrop from my Mac to iDevice since it works only with 2012 or newer macs. Yet, the App InstaShare works fine and has for over a year. What gives with that?
Interesting about the Safari issues, glad it wasn't just me. I just sold my Air because I couldn't take the issues I was having. I replaced it with an Asus Transformer T100. It's nice having sites load and working correctly. With all the searching I have been doing Safari was not cutting it.
I believe this is first where I am not having the problems others are and my Air 2 is near perfect (knocks on head) I had every problem that the original Air could possibly have that was reported. I was very disappointed coming from two perfect devices, the iPad 2 and the iPhone 5. I am glad the iPad 2 is holding up so far. I forgot to mention in my previous post that I exchanged my first iPad after a day of usage because the home button was too soft almost mushy with a barely audible click. It worked fine but I was concerned that it may not be seated properly and would quit at the most in opportune time. Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk
After my first week: The only app that has crashed a couple times on me is the Apple Reminder app. However it does also crash from time to time on my iPhone and did as well on my first iPad and iPhone 5s, so definitely a software issue. The Multi Tasking gesture appears to be working more consistently ever since I reminded it "gently" that it can be replaced with Nexus 9 The battery life is not as good as my Air was when new but I kind of knew that going in, so not a disappointment. The speed increase is noticeable as is the overall smoothness Unlike other, the finger print sensor is not my favorite, it keeps ignoring my right thumb on both my devices as it did on my 5s. Maybe it's my thumb. Interestingly the biggest problem I am having with it is finding a case. The SmartCover from my Air works but not the Apple leather case. Besides I wouldn't want that case again, the cover never laid down flat and it was a struggle to use it as a stand. I ordered a TPU case that can be used with the SmartCover but that is now on backorder. Anyone have any recommendations? Sent from my iPad Air 2 using Tapatalk
Cool, I mostly used the iPad for web browsing too. How do you like the Asus, Budney? Sent from my 128GB iPhone 6 + using Tapatalk.
Good to hear that your Air 2 is working out for you. I have to confess, I chuckled a little about your problem with the Touch ID ignoring your right thumb, as my 6 Plus doesn't seem to like my right thumb either, lol. I've reset the dang thing 3 times already and it still refuses to accept my right thumb. Too bad because I'm still keeping it in there. As far as a TPU case goes, the one I posted about above that I got from Amazon is really a nice thin clear case. It's not expensive and should protect your Air 2 till the case that you want is in stock again. Sent from my 128GB iPhone 6 + using Tapatalk.
Hi Eileen, thanks for the case recommendation. I requested cancellation of my other case and ordered the Luvitt Dolce, which is your case but with the side cut out for the SmartCover . With my trial Prime Membership I was guaranteed Monday delivery. I may end with two but that may not be all bad. Hmm, I wonder what the Touch ID has against right thumbs. I just not sure about cases. I ordered the Bear Motion case. I had it before, it's well made and inexpensive. Comes with nice cloth pouch too. But what do you think about this thin one? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00LVUACA6/ref=aw_d_pd_wireless
I had the Bear Motion case on my Moto X and really liked it. What color did you order? I just ordered the purple one, should be here Tuesday. The leather case is very nice looking but I don't know anything about it. From my previous experience it is hard to match leather colors, even when they were both from Apple so I wasn't even looking at leather. I like the slim profile of the Air 2, so was looking at getting a minimalistic case. Did you order the case? I am looking forward to your review of it. About the iPad itself, it decided to freeze on me trying to do a search for iPad cases on Safari, this is a first and I hoping doesn't happen too many more times. I got the leather brown Bear Motion but a different style than yours. Mine is thicker. Yes I ordered the thinner KAVAJ leather. It's looks really nice in the cognac color. But it's in back order until the 24th. I needed something so hence the cheap Bear Motion. I also got this gel back which can be used with an Apple Smart Cover. In general I don't like the stand mechanism of the Apple cover but it is thin and removable. The combo got great reviews. They also have a hard back cover version. I got smoke grey. Even comes in blue. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OC...416221268&sr=8-1-spell&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70 So far Safari is good.
The TPU case came in today. It's frosted and looks and feels very nice. The side cutout is perfect for the SmartCover. My plans are to only use the cover when I take it out of the house. The safari crashed and froze the iPad once again while doing a mundane search. I just upgraded it to 8.1,1, hope the bug fixes mentioned include the iPad crashing. Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk
