So here\'s the situation, my dorm apparently is apparently covered in lead, since I can\'t make or receive phone calls while in it. And almost every morning when I leave for work, my cell phone goes into a seizure and starts ringing like crazy telling me that I have a bunch of voicemails. So I was wondering if there was a way to boost my cell signal on the cheap without buying too bunch for equipment. <--- Poor college student with 1 unpaid internship and 1 part time job. I would appreciate any and all advice and even the chance for me to unleash my inner Macguyer. Thanks in advance.
Re: My dorm\'s covered in lead!!! Welcome to WA! Sorry to hear about your problems. Before we can make any recommendations, we need to know what provider and phone you have. Once we know this information, we'll be able to provide some recommendations.
Re: My dorm\\\'s covered in lead!!! Oh right. Sorry, forgot. Well, I\'m using the Razr that came standard with my phone and I use T-mobile\'s standard family plan.
Re: My dorm\\\'s covered in lead!!! Another question(s), where is this lead lined dorm located? IE: State, University, City You may have no coverage with T-Mobile in that area, how is the coverage outside the dorm? Also it could be they only have 1900 Mhz coverage which isn't as good indoors if the tower is not close enough to the dorm.
Re: My dorm\\\'s covered in lead!!! My school\'s in Fullerton, CA. And there\'s coverage outside of the dorm, but having to get out of my room and across the hall and out the door is getting a bit old, so that\'s why I\'m trying to figure a way to boost my signal.
Re: My dorm\'s covered in lead!!! It sounds like that's the problem, tower too far from your building & lack of indoor coverage. Buildings will block signals from getting thru depending on multiple factors IE: construction, frequency (1900 vs 850) 850 will go into buildings at further distance & give better indoor coverage vs 1900, distance to tower no matter which frequency, etc... T-Mobile does sell a device called Hot Spot for $10.00 a month extra & you need a high speed internet connection to use it, if they offer that at the university it's an option here is the link to it: Unsupported Browser
Re: My dorm\'s covered in lead!!! FYI you do not need to pay the ten dollars a month if you want to use your regular plan minutes, you get unlimited calling while on WiFi with a hot spot calling enabled phone with the ten dollars. Great way to boost your reception, also call in and check if there's 3G with tmobile in your area perhaps a phone upgrade is in your immediate future.
Re: My dorm\'s covered in lead!!! So if you got this WiFi device & want to use your own minutes vs unlimited there is no $10.00 fee? I didn't know that, thanks for the info. And what would make the difference with 3G in the area? are they using a different frequency with 3G then 1900? I remember they were talking about using a different band was it 700Mhz?
You might enjoy this description by Phone Scoop of the "how" and "why" of the Advanced Wireless Service (AWS). These are the frequencies that T-Mobile is using for 3G service. MetroPCS is putting the AWS bands in use in New York City, and other places, where you required have one of their tri-band phones. COtech
Thanks for the link & great info they have on it, I forgot all about those bands & the auction, very helpful. Heck I haven't been to that site in a really long time either LOL.
Re: My dorm\'s covered in lead!!! Also, to be clear, you don't need T-Mobile's Hotspot device--any Wi-fi should work, you just need a UMA capable phone.
I have the same problem w/ Sprint (and my location). There is a product by Samsung called the "airave". You have to have at best DSL for it to work. The "airave" is said to cover 3,000 square ft. I'm still waiting for mine. It is said to be a mini tower. Don't forget you have to have a WIFI phone. I have a Samsung T339 and it works perfectly. You can get one, unlocked, on ebay for $75.00. We are talking about GSM as the original post was about T-Mobile.
Since your not planning on using your Asian vacation money on your internship and when you get back to your part time job, a phone upgrade will probably do you wonders!
