AT&T seems to offer no quality phone without purchasing a data or unlimited texting plan priced between $15-30. We talk and send limited texts only and would have no use for a data plan. I like the BlackBerry Curve, she likes the Samsung Solstice. Anyway to get these phones and use it for talk and limited text only avoiding the data and/or unlimited text plan? I wouldn't mind paying retail for the phones if that means no ridiculous recurring monthly charges for things we don't use. Before you ask, "why get a BlackBerry if you will not use all the features," please read the opening statement, the other phones without data or messaging plans are garbage, and we like these models. Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately yes. The carrier's logic is that these phones are designed for data use and because of this, it must have data plan. I'm with you on this. I don't want a crappy, low-end phone. I'd rather use the phone of my choice and block data if I choose too. Sadly, the carriers care about one thing - MONEY. They are a business and this is how they choose to run it. It's not always right, but it is what it is. Your only other choice is to go with a local/regional carrier (if available) who might be more allowing with not requiring data plans on smartphones. Of course there's no guarantee of this, but it might be worth finding out about. The reality is, if you want service with the big 4, and you want a smartphone, a data plan is mandatory. It is what they require as part of their service.
What does AT&T charge for MEdia Net now? As was the case when I had service with them several years ago (as Cingular), MEdia Net was simple, basic web browsing with a regular phone, nothing extravagant.
You can get Quick Messaging Devices from AT&T which require only a messaging plan of at least $20.00. This would cover unlimited messaging. See this link for models: Packages & Deals List - Shop - Wireless from AT&T You might have to enter your Zip Code to reach that webpage.
when i upgraded a while back i had only a handful of phones to choose from. I was pretty irritated with the choices and their business practice.
