I made a two year contract with T-Mobile since June 2008, but I will very probably move to Europe (the Netherlands or Germany) in September 2009 to start my Master degree, and thus will probably have to pay the ETF, since I will have one more year to go until my contract finishes. However, today I was trying to get more info about this and read that some people have avoided their termination fee if they were moving to a place where T-Mobile has no coverage and explained this to the company. But in my case, T-Mobile does have coverage in the Netherlands and Germany! I would of course prefer not to pay the ETF if you only need to prove you're moving out of the country, but if they wouldn't want to terminate my contract because there is coverage in the NL or GER, I would be more than happy to take my "contract" to Europe, as long as I don't pay this fee! So, does anyone know if this is possible? or if T-Mobile USA is like a different company from the rest to the T-Mobiles in Europe??? I have tried to look for this case in the web without success! Thanks
Though the name is the same, T-Mobile USA is a different division from the rest of T-Mobile's operations. You should not have trouble having your ETF waived considering you are moving out of TMUSA's service area. Also, rate plans, phones, and a variety of other things are different in Europe than they are here, so I doubt T-Mobile would be able to "transfer" your service either. Hopefully tmobileman will chime in and give you a T-Mo CS answer to this. He'll either agree with what I've stated or correct my inaccuracy, either way, you'll get your answer. Welcome to Wireless Advisor, by the way.
Even though T-Mobile USA is part of T-Mobile international as is T-Mobile NL and T-Mobile DE they are all autonomous companies. If you are moving overseas T-Mobile USA should release you from any agreement you have.
You are going to be able to cancel with no etf, what is required is that when this move gets close you provide either at the time of cancellation or within 30 days of cancellation one of the following types of documentation either to a tmobile corp store or mailing in to cust relations: Current utility bill for new address OR Govt issued ID/Drivers License with new address OR Current voter Registration card showing address In your situation most people take their Passport in, not always with success, but if you have any problems just get us what you got and we will work with you. you may want to submit an unlock request for your phone so that you can use it in europe that way you don't have to buy a new device, we can do that free for you. You can use your service, but it is considerred international roaming and gets very expensive.
It's worth pointing out, and some kind Deutsch kerl may correct me if I am wrong, that getting a contract in Germany may not be easy, or even possible, for you at first given that you probably have no credit history in Germany.
This is pretty much true for most countries that if you do not have a credit rating or a sufficient rating then you cannot get monthly billed service.
Thank you all for your helpful responses... ! About the T-Mobile contract abroad, you are right about the no credit history... I never took that into consideration :-/
does anybody know if i can use this reason for early termination of the contract twice? I had family plan and recently cut a friend off b/c she was going to europe (i used her id with current european address). I will want to sign new contract to get better phone but may be living to europe myself in few months and am not sure if they will accept my id with european address (non cover area country). Do you know if that would work??? Thanks for the answer in advance!
