I am an unhappy Sprint customer looking to make a move - possibly to Alltel. The Alltel coverage in my area is supposedly much better than Sprint's.

I know that both Sprint and Alltel are CDMA so that begs the question -- would it be possible to put my Sprint Treo 650 on the Alltel network or will I have to buy a new Treo and sell mine? By possible I mean (a) technologically possible and (b) Alltel would cooperate to get my business.

I'm going to get nailed for a $150 early termination fee with Sprint, so I'm trying to save money here if possible.

Not sure if alltel would activate your sprint treo but if not you could sell it on ebay to get back some money to pay for the move to your new carrier.

Alltel offers that same phone..... http://alltel.com/phones/index.html They should have no trouble doing that technologically. It is a matter of finding a rep to do the work, they may be reluctant to do it, but if they are put it to them the same way you just did. Tell them it seems like they would be willing to do it considering you are leaving Sprint to become an Alltel customer. If you push them firmly but kindly they will do it. However you may not run into any trouble at all doing it. It just depends on the person you get. Where do you live? Keep in mind if you live in a very rural area your phone may not work because it has no analog abilities it is a dual digital. But I don't think that is too much of an issue now a days.

Its not technologically possible for the data network to work. You can activate a sprint phone on alltel service, but you can only use voice, and send text. that is all. The two carriers have different data networks, i work for alltel. I once put a friends sprint Q phone on our network just to see if it would work (after a hard fight to get it unlocked) the voice/text works, but not data internet capabilities, which kills the whole reason to have a smartphone really. And as far as the "Will they activate it when i scream and complain" question, its against policy to activate another carriers phone on oyur network, the rep that does that could even get fired. Not worth a $50k job to sell one phone to me....And I don't see a reasonable customer being able to ask someone to risk that to save $100 on buying a new phone, probably free after you sell the old one. Hope thats helpful.

Sure you can activate another carrier's equipment, but Alltel won't help you with the extra charges on the bill. I recently dealt with a dude who managed to get his Verizon phone onto the Alltel network. He had huge roaming bills and we wouldn't give him one thin dime in adjustments - because his phone was NOT an Alltel phone.

You'd likely have the same problem bringing a Sprint phone over.

Wow, I was going to post this exact same question about the possibility of switching my old Sprint Treo 650 to over to Alltel. Thanks for the info :)

I'm an authorized agent and we usually do whatever we can to activate a line of service when someone brings us a phone of another carrier ....lol.... esp since we wouldnt have to loss any $$$$ by giving up a Smartphone... and believe me ...we take a hit... We wil hack anything we can.... BUT these Treos are a _____, I've been on em for sometime and all I can get is talk and text...no data services....and I consider myself an advance tech....Hope this helps .....B-

I can get my pop3 mail from my outlook forwarded to my phone number's email which works ok, but outlook has to be open to be able to forward mail....

Someone suggested selling on ebay and getting another 650 that is an Alltel phone. That is probably your only option, but I wonder if you could flash Alltel firmware on there?
