    Move Cingular 5165 on AT&T?

I bought a used Nokia 5165 on EBay that was used on Cingular in the South. I am switching it to CallPlus prepaid which is resold AT&T network. The phone activated ok, but it's always in ROAM which makes me enter extra numbers and is a nuisance. The CallPlus people said it's possible to change this phone to AT&T but recommended dumping the phone.

Can I do any or all of the following:
    1) Put this onto the AT&T network by changing the SID and SOC (or by other means)? I can easily get to the SID and SOC setting from the menu by entering *3001#12345#

    2) Get rid of the Cingular banner/text on the main menu?

    3) Get rid of the big Cingular logo when you power the unit on?

Any ideas if this is possible? I'm in Chicagoland area code 630.

    Todd

If it doesn't work out, I have a Nokia 6160 for ATT that I bought before I learned of SOC locking. I'll offer a straight swap, no accessories. You could send that Cingular 5165 back down South where it came from.

To save aggravation and changing the ESN with the telco, etc, I would like to alter this phone if anyone can say whether or not its possible. Otherwise I might be interested in a swap.

    Anyone?

Is the phone really "locked" or does it need to be reassigned different codes for the questions I have? There is nothing preventing me from changing anything on the phone itself. Or does it need to be connected to a data cable? If so, what is done to it?

What city are you in? Will pass along PSID code and instructions so you can change your alpha tag...

I'm in suburban Chicago, area code 630. Nokia 5165. Again, I'm trying to convert a "Cingular 5165" into an "AT&T 5165." I'm not actually subscribed to AT&T (so they won't help me with this nor will Cingular) but to CallPlus Prepaid (http://www.ecallplus.com/) which is resold AT&T network. CallPlus told me to "make the phone think it's AT&T" or get a new phone :). Others on another site said I need a data cable and software to change this?

    Thanks!!

You will not be able to change the Alpha Tag unless the phone is flashed. You can change the settings to the correct sid and soc of ATT though but unless the phone gets a flash will not display the alpha tag you want.

Can it be flashed over the air (by AT&T??) or must it be via cable?
