Has anybody heard anything about an Alltel version of the 710? There's a guy on HoFo that says he has seen and played with one, but that's hardly trustworthy.
I apologize if this has already been discussed, but does anyone have an estimate for the price of this phone? I'm still 6 months out from my 2-year upgrade and my current phone's LCD screen is broke (I didn't purchase the insurance). So I need a new phone soon! It's very hard to use a cell phone with no LCD
Benoda - at this stage, there's rampant speculation, but no firm evidence of what the v710 will cost. As it's expected to be VZW's 'high end' Moto for a little while at least, it will probably be pretty costly, but we just don't know for certain. But you won't have very long to wait - it's expected out VERY soon.
Is the V710 the "Best New Phone" kina like the T720 was (never was lol)... I'm looking for a new replacement and I have Verizon. I think my contract is up in august.
My GUESS on price is around $450. I don't think it could be much more, not many people buy phones more than $250, and a $200 subsidy is about as much as VZW will ever give.
POST #301!!! Princeton NJ. Although in driving down to Texas last month, we did pass through WV, and did some research - strangely, in both places, Princeton is in Mercer County - and I believe are both named for the same Revolutionary War general. Although here's the dead giveaway that I'm in NJ: No one would have ever been that rude to me in West Virginia. (At least, not that I saw.)
What I thought I was hilarious was that 4-5 HoFo members camped out at one of the VZW stores in NYC (Union Square) beginning the 20th around 10pm at night. I wish I had absolutely nothing to do.
Here's the story: "Well, the phone didn't come out and I've had a wild Friday so sorry I didn't report back sooner. Here's what happened... About 1am, we've got somewhere near 50 people either part of the Howard forum group or bystanders hanging out with everyone with the showy phones. We underestimated demand for the nachos, but plenty of cocoa to go around. About 3am, this Asian guy with this hot, hot Asian girlfriend are fighting over why they're sticking around. The guy storms off and gets into his riced Civic when WHAM, the ice cream truck backs into him! He's so pissed he screams something in Japanese at the girl who is in tears. I go over to comfort her and, long story short, she thinks I'm funny (loved my forum posts) and cute and she wants to 'cuddle' in my sleeping bag. She tells me she's never been with an English guy but is impressed that I saw both Kill Bill Vol 1 and Kill Bill Vol 2. The fact that I've got a 2004 Acura TL is the kicker. About 7am, the manager of the Verizon store arrives and has read about our exploits on the Howard forum. He asks for me by name and pulls me aside saying that he feels really bad but because we're good customers he's going to give us something. About ten minutes later he comes back with Bluetooth pamphlets! Really cool! All sorts of information on the technology. By 8am, everyone needs to piss after drinking all the cocoa, so I combine the two Gatorade jugs into one and the guys line up to urinate in the empty jug. I tell them that the phone's not coming out but give them the pamphlets. So, in the end the v710 didn't make it into my pocket this morning. But, I got an Asian girlfriend, a Bluetooth pamphlet, and a Gatorade jug full of urine, so the evening was not a total loss." Let me retract my last statement, I'd rather be working.
Except that many other members on the HoFo VZW forum proved that this guy was totally BSing the entire forum. He's since tried to post additional threads continuing the "camp-out storyline", but the mod closes them down as soon as they start.
Critic is correct! I don't post at HoFo often but I do read it, and it looks as if this was a huge hoax.
Yes I would like to know, too becuase I might get Alltel as a secondary. And about that lovely gatorade jug... well I'm glad it's a hoax but that's still just a wonderful thought.
Hey Critic, I'm in Mercer County NJ also! I know exactly which Verizon store you are talking about. I work at the ****'s in that area (sporting goods store that is named after a man's reproduction part, LOL the forum blurrs out the name). My experiences with that Verizon store are also bad. They are always busy, and there's at least a half hour wait in the tech service line. Have you been to the Verizon store in the new Hamilton Marketplace on RT 130? I've only been there once but had very quick and curteous service. Seems like a more laid back atmosphere with less customer traffic there. However I did recognized at least one employee there from the Princeton store. But maybe check that one out. You might get more information since they seem more laid back. But anyway, back on topic, I'm believing the mid-June release date. I've seen enough info on HoFo to convince me that mid-June will be the earliest this phone will come out. I just have to decide if I'll be willing to pay retail for this phone since I just got my VX6000 in December...
Why's that? I figure that they will...just after Verizon starts selling it...well how bout 3 months after Verizon :crying:
THIS JUST IN: Photos of an Alltel v710 can be found HERE Looks legit to me, but you can never be 100% certain. This does make me excited though :hyper:
I don't know if they are legit or not. I haven't heard anything about Alltel testing the phone, and all Motorola statements have led me to believe this phone will belong exclusively to Verizon. There was also some rumor that Sprint would carry this and/or the a840, and I don't buy those at all. I would be perfectly happy with Alltel carrying this phone, I think it would be great, I just don't see it coming....That's just my opinion though, I have no inside sources on this.
Seems like Alltel never really releases any information on new phones or anything until the last minute. At least from what I've seen, they're pretty tight-lipped, but you've probably been in the wireless scene more than I have. I've only gotten into it the last year and a half, so I don't really have too much experience with it :O But, I really want this phone. I NEED this phone. I won't be able to live without it :browani: If Alltel doesn't pick it up sometime this summer, I hear GSM calling my name :yumyum:
That may make two of us switching to GSM, different reasons though. It is looking like I may end up moving to someplace that VZW doesn't have coverage (*gasp*). Though if Alltel does come out with their version of the V710 I may look at that instead of switching to GSM, don't know yet. I may switch to GSM regardless if I move, it will let me try something new.
Here's a stupid question - in looking at those pictures of the Alltel V710, I noticed that the Get It Now icon was still on the main screen navigation and in the menu. Is it possible this is just a VZW test unit with some Alltel branding added to the firmware?
That was touched on a little bit in that HoFo thread. Who knows? Could be a modified Verizon unit, could be an Alltel. We'll probably never know until it's released by Alltel or confirmed that it won't be released Towertester said he's gonna see if he can find out anything about it, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
If it was actually a unit that Alltel was testing it would not have get it now on it. Motorola would not give Alltel test units with Verizon branded firmware loaded on to them. That just would not happen. That makes me suspicious that someone on HoFo just added the Alltel logo for fun.
If they actually did come out with the StarTac 2004 for Verizon and it had bluetooth, I would be all over it.
I think they did add an alltel logo. I just did one myself and it looks like the one in the picture... all you have to do it open photoshop or paint shop pro, graussian blue the alltel logo, and rotate it a little. that's a shame though.. woulda been cool for alltel to have it. but that phone looks really big.
The other day I went to eat by mahself after work, and there was this cellular phone store so i went in there to check out GSM phones since I've been so outdated on GSMs. The guy in the store told me that the GSM motorola V600 (which is comparable to CDMA V710) has terrible bluetooth connection . In fact, he purchased a Motorola bluetooth headset to go w/ the V600 and it broke the very next day. Also, he mentioned the connection is not very reliable. Can some V600 users comment on this?? what's ur experience w/ the bluetooth connection?? ang
I borrowed a friend's bluetooth headset for a day just to test it out and it worked just fine for me... weird.
I have a factory installed bluetooth car kit in my car, which was part of the reason for trying the v600....it worked flawlessly. I really don't think the connection is unreliable. Maybe he was using it at too great a range or something was interfering with the transmission, otherwise it would not be possible to have a poor connection.
I went to school in the Princeton area and was there once..they were nice there. A lot better than the store up by where I live. I have the same decision to make. If I can land a job then I might be able to afford new sneakers and the v710.
Here's another data point: A friend of mine has the v600 and uses the bluetooth headset all the time with great success. He absolutely loves it. He hasn't tried using the phone as a bluetooth modem though...
