You can get it to Vibrate and Ring at the same time. Unlike my previous phone, which this could be done with the volume switch, you need to go into Settings and then Ring styles. From there you have the choice of Loud, Soft Vibrate & Ring, Vibrate or Silent.

You may have a long time to wait - the next major LG release is expected to be the VX-8000, due with the national EV-DO rollout...and that's not expected until at least the beginning of next year.

Moto's phones have never done vibe+ring at the same time. It's always been Vibe, THEN ring. Some like it, some hate it. I'm sure a Moto user who went to Nokia, LG, etc. would say something similar if their phone started vibrating and ringing at the same time. It takes all kinds.

Actually, the V710 will not vibrate and ring at the same time. It will vibrate first then ring. Also you can change the setting without opening the phone using the volume buttons on the side. No need to go to settings etc....

    just so people understand:

for some reason, the volume buttons only work when the phone is open, when the phone is closed, the button below the volume buttons will cycle through the ring styles.

Not for "some reason", but for very good reason. It provides a simple way to change the ring style so that the user doesn't have to go through hoops just to set their phone to vibrate before, say, a movie. This was a huge complaint on the T7X0 series - since it was missing the smart key on the left side of the phone, it wasn't possible to utilize this function.

Just to be clear - assuming it works the same way as the V60, you have to push the toggle switch up or down first, then use the smart key to change the ring style, then push up or down on the toggle again. This prevents accidential mode changes, which are very common on LG models with 1-button solutions.

You're right - that's exactly how it works. But I'm not so sure it's going to prevent accidental mode changes (I'm quite concerned about this). If you press one of the volume buttons, it switches to the "mode" setting choice that you can change with the smart key. But there's no timeout on the mode change, so if you have the phone in your pocket for hours, it's conceivable that those buttons could be pressed in the right sequence to switch the phone to "Loud" from "Silent". YIKES. So I still find the lack of a total key lock a bit frustrating.

First of all I wanted to just say that this forum is like the anti-phonescoop, relatively void of the fanboy suicide-bomb posts, and I'd like to thank the likes of Bono for good information and Critic for consistantly logical, respectful posts.

Although in theory that'd happen a lot, I had a v60i for almost 2 years with that same feature and it never changed accidentally. Also if it does, it'll make beeping noises (if it's the same as the v60i, which can be embarassing) so you'll know you changed it. The only downside about putting it in your pocket is the frequent antenna breakage.

...of course I broke my v60i with a 4 story fall to concrete. I'm sportin' the starTAC until I can get this thing.

Oh yeah, and Moto keeps emailing me ads that contain pictures of the v710. It's just mean at this point

Also, the smart key and toggle buttons will allow you to read text messages and check missed calls without opening the phone. If your outside display reads "new message" or "missed call", press the smart key, then scroll up or down with the toggle button.

This works with the v60c,i,s anyway

Here is the review: V3 Review

    PHONESCOOP REVIEW

How do you think the V710 will stack up against this new model? It looks like the new one is very pricey though....

The v710 is due out in a week.
The v3 will prolly be out beginning of 2005 at earliest.
The v710 is CDMA aka Verizon
The v3 is GSM aka Cingular/ATT

Not much of a comparison for this thread. I feel as if alot of people who are getting the v710 need a new phone or upgrade phone ASAP and are current VZW subscribers. If you wanted to wait another 6 months for a phone to come out, people wouldn't be monitoring threads like this closely. My two cents.

I agree 100%. Although I, and maybe a lot of others, didn't need a phone, just wanted the latest gadget :). There is no comparison but I understand the interest from a gadget point of view.

when th phone is closed the volume button DOES NOT cycle through the phone modes. it just displays the current phone mode that you are on and then back to the clock. The function button on the side is what cycles through the phone modes

I would love to get a v3 but it is like comparing a Ferrari to a Ford. And with all technology there is always something better available 6 months from now, its just all about how much you want to spend.

I'm now starting to wonder with the crippled BT, how important is the BT to me in terms of comparing it to the VX-8000.

Be carefull not to fuel this "crippled BT" theory. That theory remains to be proven. ;)

Also remember that the VX-8000 is a long way off yet.

I have the Moto V710 from Radio Shack. However, I can't seem to get the bluetooth to work with my computer. I have the Motorola Phone Tools Software 2.21 that allows you to sync phonebook/appointments/get/send music, pictures, etc. via bluetooth, (ebay for $4 free shipping) but I think Verizon locked this phone down so hard we can't access it. Hopefully, they will have a software update soon for these phones. The V710 is on the list of supported phones. I'm working with BVRP software (the people who make Moto phone tools) and hopefully we can find a solution. The phone will pair with the comp, but when it tries to pull across the phone's screen it just keeps saying "initializing". I'm also using a d-link usb adaptor for my link. Maybe I have to buy the "official" motorola usb bluetooth adaptor.

    http://commerce.motorola.com/consumer/QWhtml/mpt.html

Click on the "See all data solutions" link.

I'm guessing I might need to buy a data cable. (E-bay for $3). But, what's the point of locking down bluetooth if you can do all the same stuff over a cable! Who knows. This is a serious drawback though.

Also, if you're looking for transflash I ordered on off Amazon.com for $33. Even though it says it's preorder only, mine shipped yesterday. I am certain I can get files over this way. Some have tried transfering mp3's on the internet, but their attachments get removed. I have no clue how to get mp3's on this phone currently besides the memory card!!!

I also have a dell axim X30 w/bluetooth and the only thing I can get it to do is make phone calls from the contacts list. The problem is the phone thinks these are data calls. (I hope I don't get charged data rate fees!)

Motorola software support told me that the problem with Moble PhoneTools is actually a problem in the V710 software that is being addressed alond with some BT problemswith no ring and no way to upload phonebook data to Lexus, Toyota, and other cars with built in BT. He stated that the fix should be available from VZW as either an over-the-air update or it may need to brought in to them to update.

Otherwise this phone is great! :)

by the way, the sync failure is with eiter BT or the data cable.

I've been able to get MPT working over the cable. Just make sure that your MPT is fully updated and that your USB driver is updated (you can find the driver here: \program files\mobile PhoneTools\inf )

Since you have the cable working, what all have you been able to do? Can you transfer the pics/sounds/files like it says? I noticed that depending on which phone model I picked from the list there were different options on the right hand side. (photos etc.) The V710 only had web, e-mail, sms, phonebook, calendar, and one other I can't remember...

No, all you can do right now is transfer and synchronize contacts and calendars.... That's all I REALLY need to do right now. As far as photos go, If I need to use the T-Flash card (when I get it) then that's OK.

As far as using a cable versus BT-- I don't see an advantage to BT, as I'm right next to the computer when I do it. I guess it might be an issue if I used a notebook, and wanted one less cable.

Did anyone else order the card from buy.com? I just got an email saying the transflash card shipped. So I checked my bank history, and it's still pending...but they appear to have credited me for the amount of the total.

    Did I win?

    I don't know...how that could have happened...but did anyone else have a similar issue with buy.com or...anything?

According to the buy website my order has been transfer to the warehouse but not shipped. I ordered mine on Friday and they charged my card right away. I got the status yesterday that it was transfer to the warehouse by checking their web site myself. No email.
