Motorola may not be doing themselves any favors by signing exclusive agreements with Verizon. Yes, Verizon is large, but they have shown absolutely no talent for getting products tested and on store shelves.

It would make sense if Motorola had some outs of any exclusive agreements, worded basically like this. “If Verizon pi$$es in the wind, as typical Verizon style in getting this product tested and to market we (Motorola) may sell said phone to competitors.”

There is always the Latin America market, they are wide open for sales as soon as the phone is released.

I heard a similar (the same?) radio spot on Q104 this morning - the thing that struck me as funny was that they're advertising the phone as "new" - hasn't the i710 been out for the better part of a year? Also, I'm pretty sure Nextel's ad agency embarassed themselves by trying to work some "street" into the ad copy. (Something about 'slammin' features, or something.)

That's exactly what I was thinking. The photos proved that he wasn't totally full of it (shot of the exterior LCD with today's date), but in this day in age, three weeks turnaround is horrific. I would think, considering that VZW and Moto both have a modern inventory infrastructure, a 2-day or next-day drop-ship wouldn't be out of the question. (Hell, I can order a computer from MacConnection and have it here tomorrow if I wanted to. I'm sure a big company like VZW could get the same kind of service from an even bigger company like Moto.)

Also creating doubt in my mind:
-the V260 will be released as the "StarTAC"? That, to me, doesn't make any sense. If you reuse such a well-known brand name, the public's expectation is that the new product will look/feel like the old product. (See: Korean StarTAC 2004) It would be like like calling a new orange-flavored soda "CocaCola". (Trademark infrigement aside.) Also, since the V260 (and the V265) have already been announced with their V-series names...
-what was that jazz about problems with the charging port? I've never had a problem with the charging port on my v60, and I'm not exactly the most gentle person when I put it in the cradle at night. (On the other hand, the one on the old StarTAC/Timeport series was awful.) So why would they redesign it? Especially since Moto's Bluetooth accessories all use the same charge port design...?

I hear that! I have the new phone fever again. I got it a couple of months ago and it went away but it is back and worse now because it sounds like the 710 is so close.

Since I don't have any updates on the V710 (wish I did!) I am placing this post with a question-- besides it might kill some time until we hear more about the release date. One of the major things that has attracted me to the V710 is its bluetooth capability, a first for Verizon. My question then is why has Verizon been so slow to offer bluetooth enabled phones while other carriers have long since been offering them? What has been their rationale behind the lag? Can I assume their explanation is lame?

Does anyone have an update on the v810? I'm curious about both phones, and if they are going to be released relatively close to each other, I will wait. Is three weeks still the gap? Also, does anyone know the difference in price between the two?

    Thanks,

    Danny

V810 is supposed to come out a few weeks after the V710 whenever that is? My gut feeling says that if the V710 goes for $399.00 the V810 will be $199.00

Actually, this isn't VZW's first phone with BT, but it might as well be - the Moto T270c had a BT dongle available for it, but VZW all but disabled BT in the firmware. Some folks have had some success with the phone and (I imagine) engineering firmware, but it was never something VZW supported.

The main issue with BT was market penetration. Up until very recently, you'd mention "bluetooth" to someone and they'd tell you to go to the dentist to have it pulled. Once PDAs and laptops started including built-in or add-on BT, and wireless headsets and car kits became more popular, the public's awareness of Bluetooth improved.

There was a cost factor too. The cost to build a phone with BT was (until recently) much higher than to build one without it.

On the CDMA side of things, it's only very recently that Qualcomm had a chipset capable of BT, compact enough to fit into a modern phone, and inexpensive enough to produce that the addition of BT wouldn't jack up the overall cost of the phone.

VZW would never have insisted on it three years ago, because BT was not a mainstreamed technology back then. They were also content to sit back on their "we have the best network" claim as the sole reason for folks to subscribe and buy (in my opinion, anyway) mediocre phones with minimal connectivity options. But with everything from iBooks to everyday production automobiles including BT technology, coupled with VZW's growing data business, their opinion likely changed.

And yes, if you officially asked anyone at VZW why they didn't support BT, the explanation would likely be lame.

Damn, I've been keeping up with this thread for a while and am getting quite impatient. I've been wanting to swap out my VX4400 and am looking to get this phone. I wish it would hit the shelves already (as long as it's not another T720 disaster).

Can anyone tell me how much I should expect to pay (assuming I get a discount for extending my contract another year)?

I've seen pricing guesses range from $120 - $500... I ask because if it's going to be above $250, then I doubt I'll wait any longer and just get something else.

Yeah I can second that Critic! When I first signed up with VZW 2 years ago I was asking the sales rep about which phones could access the internet and download tones and all that good stuff. The sales rep said we only have a couple of phones that can do all of that because VZW is worried about a virus getting on the phone and things like that! Pretty funny when I think about it now considering almost every phone they offer can do all of that. :headscrat

Moto is coming up on a quiet period before Q2 numbers are announced. They legally won't be able to say much about anything. They do hold a big conference the week after for industry and financial analysts to wine and dine them so they write glowing things about Moto in the press. If Motorola had a super secret phone, that would be the time to announce it. ;)

I'd also imagine the V710 would have shipped before then so they won't have to face these key people and explain why they missed another release date.

Would be interesting to know who really caused the release date to slip, Verizon or Motorola.

Looks like we're not the only one's looking forward to the V710, check this out- from yesterdays IBD http://www.investors.com/breakingnews.asp?journalid=22041876&brk=1

    from Ratings roundup

In other calls from the sell-side, Thomas Weisel Partners bumped its recommendation on Motorola (MOT) up to "outperform" from "peer perform" while also raising earnings estimates for the fiscal 2004 and fiscal 2005.

Underpinning the upgrade was strength was continued strong momentum in handsets with checks showing the handset division performance tracking strongly near-term while new handset product introductions could make for a better than expected second half.

"With a slate of new product introductions around the bend, MOT's second half 2004 performance could turn out to be better than the 'worst case' scenario we have been building into our model," analyst Hasan Imam wrote in a note to clients.

Imam also noted that checks indicate that the eagerly anticipated V710 megapixel camera phone is likely to hit Verizon Wireless stores in the third quarter, which could potentially drive CDMA, or code division multiple access sales, which has been one of MOT's weak pockets.

Motorola edged up 5 cents, or 0.3 percent to $17.42.

I've spoken to Verizon representatives at two stores:
    - Verizon in Hicksville - They said beginning of August for release
    - Verizon in Lake Grove - No known release date.

I've also spoken to a representative at Radio Shack in Syosset, and he mentioned by the end of this month.

I've been following this thread ever since I found out about the V710 about a week ago. I'm porting from ATT to Verizon very soon, (my two year contract ends July 22nd) and my question is:

I will need to port over on the 22nd to Verizon, most likely the phone will not be out by then (V710) but I know of the 15 day trial. If I pick up a LG VX7000 and use it for say 2 weeks and the V710 comes out, can I swap the phones (if there isn't a price difference of course). If the phone doesn't come out in 2 weeks though, could I switch for a different phone and continue another 15 day trial or is this not possible? I really want the v710 and would rather not have to get the VX7000, then the v710 comes out in say August and have to sell my phone on eBay to buy a new V710.

    Thanks in advance.

4th Quarter starts end of August I believe, meaning the phone will be out probably within the next week or two, if not by End of August.

Moto's Q2 is over. The earnings press release is 07/20/04. The two weeks or so before the release has to do with the time it takes to prepare the report, and has nothign to do with their quarter ending at some other time, so I am not sure what he August garbage is.

Why do you HAVE to switch on the 22nd?

Why not just go m2m until the V710 is released and then switch?

This may very well be the dumbest thing I was thinking of, maybe because I'm going delusional at work and want out already for the weekend but if you look at motorola's site, the V710 signup where it will announce when it is released the amount of phones they are giving out is 710, tomorrow is 7/10. I dunno, I think i'm going delusional.

Spoke to Verizon in Syosset, they said by end of month it should be in.

Not a bad idea, although I'd like to switch to Verizon as soon as possible (In-Calling Network, will be in FL, Girlfriend in NY) but I see your point, but I could be waiting another 3 months for it. I see what you're saying though. If by mid-August it isn't out I'll probably just go with the VX7000.

Heres another thing I was maybe reading way too far into but here goes:

Be one of the first 710 people to purchase a Motorola v710 handset and register your purchase online at http://www.motorola.com/shop/v710registration, after receiving official notification from Motorola that registration has begun, and receive a FREE Bluetooth® device of your choice: Motorola hands-free Bluetooth® headset HS810 (ARV $119.99) or Bluetooth® Portable Wireless Speaker HF800 (ARV $119.99). Offer expires August 1, 2004 or while the first 710 offer packages last.

Offer expires August 1st, or while the first 710 offer packages last. Meaning that August 1st is probably the latest it will come out but they aren't saying thats the day, it could be before.

In return to my question, would switching the 24th or something (plan ends the 22nd) would I be billed for a full month of service from AT&T?
