I just got a Motorola v710 from RadioShack yesterday.

There are numerous rumors going around about Motorola working on an update that would enable OBEX file sharing via Bluetooth sometimes in September, and the fact that RadioShack decided to start selling the v710 right away while Verizon is waiting for this update.

I have my doubts about the first theory, knowing Verizon's greedy business practices, I tend to think they crippled the Bluetooth OBEX capacity of the phone on purpose to push their "get in now" (or whatever it's called) service. Time will tell...

The second theory though (RadioShack shipping phone w/ older firmware) sounds plausible and would explain why it is pretty much the only place you can get the v710 right now.

So I thought it would be interesting to have people post their firmware version (main menu > Phone Info > Other Information > S/W Version) as well as where/when they got their v710 so we know at least partially what's going on.

    I'll start:

    When: 08/19/04
    Where: RadioShack/NYC
    Firmware: 8700_01.30.8F

All of the V710's that have been sold are of the same firmware version. there may be a few early radio shack sold v710's with a slightly older firmware, but for the most part, we all have the same version no matter where it was bought.

Verizon may have been waiting to stock up the stores as opposed to selling out like RS did.

You can get around the bluetooth limitations by using a USB cable. I know it defeats the bluetooth, but the end result is the same.

rumors have a firmware update soon, who knows what it will bring, if it even happens.

hope that cleared things up a bit......

Being available and being in-stock are two different things. Most stores around me have already sold through their initial shipment of V710s and are waiting for more, shuffling customer orders through Fulfillment in the meantime.

First off, i have the same firmware version. Second, radio shack literally had it first, Motorola released their stock to Radio Shack well before they released it to Verizon. Why? I don't know, but I;ve heard from two managers of Radio Shacks(each from different stores in my area) that Motorola did it as a favor to Radio Shack, whether that's true or not, i dont know. All i know is that around my house Radio Shack started carrying the V710's easily a month before the verizon stores

For the few omniscient sarcastic people among you: I meant this thread to be an ongoing one, so we could see if a new firmware version starts showing up without being documented - if you think it's such a ridiculous idea, you don't have to participate...

I thought for sure there were different versions out there. more than one have complained about low earpiece volumes, while me, and some others have said their earpieces are louder than needed (I can't use mine past 4, too loud) I assumed this was different firmware versions......

Nope people just like to complain. Same firmware, same volume. The only difference is level of wax buildup in peoples ears I guess.

    Look what I found
It says on the bottom of this V710 FAQ page by Moto.
NOTE: Currently, the Motorola V710 phone distributed in North America supports Mobile Phone Tools only through a USB cable connection. A solution to support Mobile Phone Tools over a Bluetooth connection should be available later this year.
So while they are working on that they ight fix the other issues too.

It's already been said in two or three other places in this forum that there should be a firmware release probably around the first part of September. Given the way VZW handles dates, I'm guessing mid-October to early November, but one can always hope. According to what others have written, OBEX is supposed to be dealt with in the revision, but we will just have to wait and see.

I bought my 710 at one of the Columbus, OH VZW stores last week. Our local stores are getting about 20 in at a time on their weekly drop ship orders. My software is the same 30.8F as everyone else.

As much as I'd like to believe the rumors, until I see some hard data, I'm not holding my breath for OBEX in the next firmware release. I just can't imagine VZW releasing their GIN deathgrip...

Howdy Folks: I got my v710 on the 19th of August, 2004.
I have the same firmware as mentioned above.

Any new words on the "BT Update"?

Does Motorola's iSync software really work?

    Thanks All....

iSync is Apple's software, not Motorola's.

If I already have the phone, will I be able to get the firmware update, or is that only available in phones purchased after its released?

Any VZW store will flash the new firmware onto a V710 that bears the VZW logo, regardless of when or where it was purchased.

Anyone heard any news on the firmware upgrade? Just wondering how it was making it through testing.

According to what I've heard, the firmware update has already been delivered to VZW for testing. Because of the extent of the changes, VZW is going to put this update through the full test process - that, combined with the fact that other phones (V26X, A840, V65p) have testing priority at the moment, means you can look for the update no earlier than November. VZW is going to push to get the new phones out on the shelves for the holiday buying season before they revisit existing phones.

Critic is correct... :highclap: The firmware upgrade for the 710 should be available in early November. It should fix the volume issue and a few other things, lets hope so... :D

Good question, I have spoken to a VZW supervisor who told me that the update should be out in November. However he was not sure what all was going to be "Udated"

Hopefully some more news will come out soon.

You might have better luck asking this in the Alltel carrier forum. If you're a NEW Alltel customer, I suspect they're going to try and strongarm you into buying a new phone. If you're an existing customer, you might get lucky, but I suspect it's going to depend on the technician you get.

Also, and I may be wrong on this (and if I am, guys, feel free to correct me), but IIRC, Alltel will be able to tell that it's not one of THEIR V710's from the phone's ESN number.
