    Re: RAZR V3m

I know you want to use BitPim to do this, however MPT 4 has an outlook type interface for text messages that shows you sent and received messages.

If you right click on the text message button in the phone graphic, and click "Received Mail" it opens up the Outlook-like window.

Not sure if this helps at all, but I found the interface easy to use for that feature. I haven't gotten BitPim to sync my SMS info yet.

    Re: RAZR V3m

Has anyone been able to create key shortcuts on the V3m? I was wondering whether this was a possibility, since Im not a huge fan of Verizon's menu system. I would like a shortcut to the mp3 player, one to the web, and one to the calendar. Any idea how one might do this on the phone?

    Re: RAZR V3m

Also, I have been able to copy images to the phone using BitPim, however they don't display within the phone image browser. They just show up as an X - meaning the phone sees them but can't display them. Does anyone have tips on how to make images uploaded with BitPim compatible with the phone image viewer? Even if i copy a file to Windows, rename it, and upload it, it still doesn't display, so it isnt the data itself, but rather some attribute of the file.

    TADAH #2 for Bluetooth !!!

I was able to get the bluetooth function working for my V3M. As with the cable setup, I have full functionality using the MPT with the bluetooth, ie. phonebook, calendar, ringtones, music, movies, the whole 9 yeards! I was able upload to phone and download from phone EVERYTHING, just no cable to mess with.

    Instructions to follow.

mstanana: Here is what you should do:

    1) Download, unzip and run this program: http://www.bvrp.com/Customers/Motorola/DriverTool.zip
    2) Turn off your phone
    3) Plug your phone into the computer
    4) Wait for Windows to recognize your phone
    5) Turn on your phone
    6) Go to Menu....Get It Now Menu....Tunes and Tones...Sync Music
    7) Wait for the sync to take place, and hopefully you will be succesful in connecting to the computer -- if you are your phone will say so

Let me know if there are problems -- I am interested in putting together a universal FAQ for doing this, perhaps on a dedicated website.

    Re: RAZR V3m

mstana -- it sounds to me like you are turning the phone on before it is done installing the drivers. The sync process is later -- first you need to succesfully install the drivers for the phone. Make sure your phone is off, but plugged in with usb, install the drivers, then once it installs the drivers, you can turn on the phone and activate the sync button. However, the found new hardware wizard shouldn't pop up if you succesfully installed the drivers while the phone was plugged in and turned off.

Please verify that you installed while the phone was turned off.

    Re: RAZR V3m

I found the file format for the videos on a V3m by simply setting the phone to write video capture to the microSD. I then looked at the chip contents using my computer. They are "3g2" video files. There are plenty of conversion programs out there that will convert most video files into this format.
I simply converted a bunch of stuff I wanted to watch on the phone and wrote them over to the microSD using my file browser on my computer. I haven't figured out how to do it using a usb cable. Hope this helps.

    Re: RAZR V3m

My V3M is sitting on my nightstand, charging for the first time... and I must say, since purchasing it, I've read an awful lot of bad things about them. Thinking about taking it back to Verizon before even turning it on for the first time!

My top concern is mainly Verizon's cripple-ware OS and everything associated with it. I purchased this phone, and I should be able to do whatever the hell I want with it... I wish they were still selling the A670, I can do anything with that phone, and then throw it out of a 10 story building for no reason, and go down and pick it up, and it'd be just fine.
Maybe I'll just keep my old Samsung... this is really a dissapointment.

I wish there was some way to get ahold of the OS that Motorola put on these things out of the factory, I mean, there has to be some way... come on Motorola... accidentaly just let it slip out. I love Verizon's cell coverage, but hate almost everything else about them. *Sigh* another two years...

    Rosenjon,
No, I made sure that the drivers were updated and fix applied and then turned the phone on. I promise I did! I even called verizon which gave me a fix on microsoft website article 911091 and that did not work. I am going to try again on my home computer - maybe on this network there is something messing me up.

    Re: RAZR V3m

Ok, here it is. Sorry if it is kinda long, but you can probably cut the BS out of it and make it shorter. :)

    Software/hardware/system:
A.) IOGEAR GBU221 Bluetooth 2.0 USB Adapter, Class 2, which I got for ~$30 + tax. It comes with software. The thing that upset me about this dongle was, AFTER I got home and opened it, it did not come with a protective cap that fits over the male end of the adapter!! Can you believe that! When I talked to IOGEAR about it over the phone, the person told me 'next time read on the package what I was getting before I buy'!! Talk about a horses-petunia (better than saying a horses-___) :censored:
    B.) Windows XP w/SP2.
C.) Motorola Phone Tools ver 4.0

    Acronyms:
a.) For the rest of these instructions, I will refer to the IOGEAR Bluetooth USB Adapter as a dongle, which is it's technical name anyway.
b.) BT will refer to Bluetooth.
c.) MPT will refer to Motorola Phone Tools

Dongle and Phone setup - this should be fairly standard - I hope.
1.) Install the dongle software, even if MPT is already installed, just do not start MPT yet. This installation was a breeze to do. It was very easy and fast.

Be sure to READ the manual that comes with it! For IOGEAR, there is a few steps that says to click on 'cancel' to skip a process and another step says to click on 'ok' to skip a process. If you do it backwards it try's to perform the process, messes up and you have to start all over again. So READ the install procedures of your owner's manual.

2.) After the dongle software installs and after you restart your system,
insert the dongle into the USB port of your choice and wait for Windows to
install it's drivers. Wait until you see "New hardware is ready to use" balloon
    before you go on.

2A.) My system put a BT Icon on the system tray. When the mouse hovers over it, it displays "Bluetooth on 'followed by the computer name' ".

3.) Click on the BT icon and a window will open showing all your BT supported
devices. it should be 'blank' at this point.

4.) Now turn on your phone and activate the BT function of the phone.
Menu->Setting&Tools->Connections->Bluetooth->Setup->Power->On. Stay at the Setup screen as you are going to have to do things from here in future steps.

5.) Click on the BT screen and choose 'View Device in Range' and at the same
time click on 'Find Me' on the phone. Once the BT software recognizes the
phone, a icon of a phone described as 'bluetooth phone and not connected', will appear in the blank window.

6.) Right-click on the BT phone and select the pairing option.

Both the BT software and the phone will request a password to connect to each other. I entered four zeros as both passwords. Whatever your dongle manual says to enter as the password, enter that same password in the phone. The thing is that the passwords MUST match each other 'exactly'. Once they 'pair up', there will be a check mark next to the phone.

Note that once the device is 'found and paired', it will be permanently added
to a list of BT supported devices, so you do not have to do this for that
    device again.

    Making Everything Work thru MPT
    7.) Start MPT.
8.) Give a 'new' profile name, like 'rwsrichard V3m BT'. Then click on ok, twice.
9.) 'Application Setup' starts running and can take a few minutes.
10.) The 'Phone Setup Wizard' screen will display. Choose the connect by
    Bluetooth option.
    11.) Click on next.
12.) A 'Phone list' list will appear and choose V3cm from the list.
    13.) click on Next
14.) A screen about 'Instructions for Discoverable' will display.
Read this and follow the instructions. the screen said it will last for around
60 seconds. Mine only lasted for about 5 seconds. So I had to select 'Find Me' a number of times.
15.) click on Next, when you understand the 'Find Me' function from step 14, which is the last step and at the same time select 'Find Me' from the phone.
16.) from the PC, a screen called 'Discovering Device' will display. Keep pressing 'Find Me' on the phone while it is trying to detect your phone. IF it finds your phone go to step 18.
17.) Skip this step IF your device was 'discovered' in step 16. Check to make sure the phone is still 'connected' via the dongle by looking at the BT software. The phone icon will display 'connected', if it is connected and 'not connected;, if it is NOT connected. If NOT connected, click on the phone-icon in the BT software. This connects the phone to the dongle. If the dongle and phone still will not reconnect, try turning off the phone and unplugging the dongle. Then plug back in the dongle, turn on the phone and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on in the phone. Then double-click on the BT icon in the system tray and then click on the phone-icon in the BT software device list. Click on the 're-test' button on the 'Discovering Device' screen. You may have to repeat step 17 acouple of times, until step 16 'discovers' the phone.
18.) Once Discovered, a phone icon named "Motorola Phone' will be displayed.
19.) click on the Motorola Phone icon.
    20.) click on Next.
21.) 'Installing Device' window screen will display.
22.) 'Congratulations!' screen will display. Do not do anything. The next screen will automatically display.
23.) 'Phone Setup' screen will display. It's function is to put the Motorola
Phone Tool icon on your desktop.

Once it displays, watch the phone screen as it will show 'initializing phone, please standby ...'. The first time I did this, it took a good two minutes before it stopped initializing. But it did initialize.

Once it initializes/connects, in the upper left corner of the MPT phone screen it will show a strength meter when it connects. The upper right hand corner, will show the strength of your battery. Using your mouse you can use the full function of the MPT phone keys to make calls, end calls, check your mail, etc....

Also note that the options: phonebook, calendar, multimedia studio,
synchronizing and txt messaging icons will be grayed out until you move your
    mouse over them.

Well, folks. that is how I did it.

Again, I apoligize for this being so long.

Also I did NOT 'seem' the phone at all.

    Re: RAZR V3m

rwsrichard - Two questions. When you did this by USB, how was it different? (For those of us to have yet get a BT dongle - on my list.) Second, did you uninstall the drivers installed by DriverTool.exe before installing MPT or did you leave them in then install MPT?

  18. rwsrichard

    rwsrichard Guest

    Re: RAZR V3m

Question 1.) To do this using the USB Cable, it is only about 8 steps. The dongle takes about 22 steps. Here is the steps I used with a cable:

    System, software and hardware:
    Windows Xp w/SP2
    Motorola Phone Tools ver 4.0
    mini-usb to full usb cable

1.) Install the MPT 4.0 software, read/follow the instructions on the screen as it installs. In the process of installing the MPT software, it goes out on the internet and checks for updates. You will be prompted to download, then install the update(s). At this point that is ALL you are going to do.

If you are prompted enter/select a Phone Profile. Do NOT do it, ignore it, let it set there, do not touch it. :browani: All you do for this step is install MPT software, download and install the updates. That's it, nothing else.

2.) Reboot your system when you are prompted to. When the system finishes rebooting, click on the MPT icon to activate the software.

3.) NOW create a 'new' phone-profile, example 'rwsrichard Razr V3m'. click on OK twice.

4.) the 'phone wizard' screen will display. Choose CABLE option and click on Next button.

5.) you will be prompted to turn on phone, connect phone to cable, then connect cable to USB port on PC.

6.) 'Phone Setup' then starts installing needed drivers. It will then try to detect your phone. If it does not detect it, allow it to launch 'live update' to try to get your drivers and then redect your phone.

7.) when it cannot detect it again, you will be prompted to select your phone and drivers. Choose CDMA from the list on the left and then choose V3cm from the list on the right. then click Next.

It will go through it's detect process again, but should find it this time. If it did, you will get a 'Congratulation!' screen displayed. Do not click on anything as the next screen will display automatically - at least mine did.

8.) The 'Phone Setup' screen will display. this puts the MPT Phone icon on the desktop. Watch the phone screen as it will show 'initializing phone, please standby ...' This may take a minute or two.

Once it connects or finishes initializing; in the upper left corner of the MPT phone screen it will show a strength meter when it connects. The upper right hand corner, will show the strength of your battery. Using your mouse you can you the full function of the MPT phone keys to make calls, end calls, check your mail, etc...

Also note that the options: phonebook, calendar, multimedia studio, synchronizing and txt messaging icons will be grayed out until you move your mouse over them.

That is how I did it.

No 'seeming', no bitpm, nothing else.

Question 2.) Did not install the DriveTool.exe. Just installed from the MPT cd. It took care of all the updates for me.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: RAZR V3m

This is great! Thanks. One more question. In the above quote, you say to "Do NOT do it, ignore it, let it set there, do not touch it." Does it automatically go on to the next step from here? Does it ask you to reboot from there?

  20. rwsrichard

    rwsrichard Guest

    Re: RAZR V3m

The "Do NOT do it, ignore it, etc.." is referring to the prompt to create a Phone Profile, while you are installing the MPT software and updates.

When the MPT software and updates are finished installing from step 1, you will be prompted to restart your system, which is step 2. I had to restart/reboot my system. It did not automatically do it for me.

Even when you restart/reboot your machine, the prompt to create a Phone Profile is still displayed on the screen, which goes away during the restart/reboot process.

In step 3, you can then create the Phone Profile.

    Hope that clears it up.

Great. Thanks again for the help. My disc of MPT should be here in a couple of days. I'll let you know how it goes. It would be great to have at least two of us having this work so as to give others hope. Thanks again.

Anyone else having success with this yet?

    Re: RAZR V3m

hey i just wanted to let you all know that ive been using this thread for the past day or two and its really helped me out thus far.

ive so far been able to put music on my v3m without the stupid verizon software and change the image that appears on the outer screen when the phone is open (the pic is so much better than the stupid verizon logo)

ive been experimenting with bitpim a lot and there are a lot of things you can do with it, but im afraid that MPT 4 is just the way to go. i am going to install it here pretty soon and see if i can get it to work using rwsrichard's tutorial (crossing my fingers). my phone software is the same and so forth.

unfortunately it looks like most of the secrets have been unlocked for this phone already, but if i can think of anything that i did with bitpim that's worth mentioning, or if anyone is interested in changing their outer screen picture (when phone is open) i can totally help you out.

let's just pray that i dont totally ruin my phone in the next day or two haha

    Re: RAZR V3m

rwsrichard: thanks for posting those directions so quickly

I have played around with MPT to try to reproduce your results, and so far have not been able to. If I Liveupdate MPT, then it auto-recognizes the v3m and loads a version of the software that has Multimedia Studio removed as an option. I installed that MPTfix patch earlier, when I was first trying to get the WMP10 sync working, on the assumption that the patch was necessary to get the phone to sync with WMP10. However, I am curious as to whether the true purpose of that patch is to allow Motorola Phone Tools to auto-recognize the v3m and auto-disable the Multimedia Studio?

I have been able to manually select the v3cm phone like you explained, by pulling out the usb cord once the software starts to auto-recognize the phone. This allows me to mess up the recognition of the phone, and force it into manual setup mode. However, once I am in manual setup mode and have selected the v3cm, it won't recognize the phone.

Rwsrichard - Did you purchase your v3m recently? Can you give us the purchase date? I am just curious whether it is possible that it is unlocked due to it being an early release or something like that. Just want to make sure there aren't other variables that are allowing you to edit the phone info like ringtones, but which might prevent recent purchasers from doing so.

Thanks again for the tutorial. Can others please post if they have achieved the desired result in MPT of getting Multimedia Studio working, and full access to all phone features?

    Re: RAZR V3m

I really and truly believe that MPTfix patch causes this problem. When I first tried to install MPT, I got the same results as you. I had also installed the MPTfix and I did not have Multimedia Studio. I am afraid that you need to get rid of ALL installed drivers/software that are associated with the phone.

You should not have to unplug the usb cord while it is trying to detect your phone. After the second failure to auto-recognize the phone, it will present you with a list, so you can pick the drivers.

Purchased mine online on 06/20/2006, received by UPS on 06/27/2006. This was the only way that I could get the Silver V3m.

If you have anymore problems, let me know and I will try to help.
