I have a Motorola Q on the Alltel network. I am using the AlltelU pay as you go plan-I know, the Q is supposed to only be used with a data plan. I got the Q activated over the phone after they would not do it in the store. I did not tell the rep what type of phone it was. Afterwards, everything worked great including sending/receiving text messages!! So, after a month, I call in to switch to a $5.00 text package instead of paying 15 cents per text received/sent. After doing so, phone worked fine, but I no longer could send or receive text messages. I call in to customer service--rep asks what type of phone and after she finds out I am using a Q on a pay as u go plan, she deactivates it!!!! Well, I call back in and re-activate the phone with no problem. Thinking I am good to go, BUT, I can receive text messages, but I get an error message when I try to send them. I did a complete reset of the phone and the problem is still present. Is it a problem with the phone, do I need to change a setting, or is it my pay as you go plan??? Any help is appreciated!
It's probably the service. You could get a non contract service but just pay the price for the plan. It may take going to an independent dealer but it might happen.
The MotoQ was not MMS capable. That was fixed in the subsequent release of the Q9c. IIRC, there was a software revision that allowed the original Q to send/rcv MMS but you need to take in into a Sales Office to do it. Of course, when you do so, and they find out it's a smartphone on a PrePay acct, they will not only NOT update it but remove it from the phone line AGAIN.
Thanks Bryan.....would they do the software update if I deactivate the phone? Or I could deactivate Prepay, ask for a 1 month trial of data plan, then cancel and get back on pre-pay....... just wondering why sending texts originally worked and then all of a sudden quit.....
Oh so if it's MMS, I wonder if Arcsoft would work? Maybe you can find the ROM update somewhere on the Interwebz.
:\ MMS = picture mail basically Arcsoft = Windows Mobile MMS software that at least works on the HTC phones. ROM = a compilation of Windows Mobile for your phone that can have unique features Interwebz = Internet
Thanks Mr. Obvious. I'm not concerned about picture mail. I just want to send texts and reply to texts.
Hmm. Motorola - Support - Software Update You could try that and it's the latest official ROM off of Motorola's site. It will wipe everything out so be prepared to back it up.
Why would they flash a "deactivated" phone? I mean it's obviously only a ploy to get around the restriction of a smartphone on a prepay line so why would they do it? Also, there is no "free" or "trial" plan of a post-pay acct. You either are or you aren't on a post pay plan. Is it really worth it to pay an activation fee of $25, a possible deposit, and then hassle of disconnecting later just to get a flash update (IF available, I never said it WAS) for a phone you aren't supposed to be using with PrePay to start with?
Ran the online update software and it said there were no updates available.......... Bryan, I like the phone, but I have no need for the data plan or internet access. I don't understand why these carriers want to force a dataplan on to people. Other than the obvious--$. If they would give people better options of phones for voice/text, I wouldn't have to be trying to use a dataphone on pre-pay. These carriers are running a monopoly, and I am not gonna go for it. I'd rather have no service at all.
This is what I was told when I worked at an independent dealer: They lose money and have to recoup it from the plans.
Well I like Mercedes but don't want the payment that goes with them. Just because you "like" something doesn't mean you can use it. That is life whether we like it or not. If you don't like the rules, then lobby the company to change them. Until they change they ARE the rules.
I've had a Q on Alltel prepay for nearly a year now. It was a used one and a rep at an authorized retailer put it on for me. I did have one rep at the main Alltel store tell me it wasn't supposed to be used for prepay, but they didn't deactivate it. No problems sending or receiving standard text messages with it. I have done all the updates at the motorola website, so maybe that is why.
I have tried the updates with no luck. Someone did offer that when they deactivated the phone, they also deactivated SMS. When I had the phone reactivated, SMS may not have been reactivated.
