Maybe a problem with the usb cable? I doubt it, but nothing else makes sense. How about using bluetooth to connect to MPT? Do u have bluetooth on your laptop?

I can try another cable. I'm not sure if my computer has bluetooth. Is there a way to find out before I buy anything else?

If u dont know, it probably doesnt. But it should have a bluetooth emblem somewhere on the comp. Go ahead and try a diff cable...soemthing seem out of place. You dont have any other program open while trying to use MPT right?

EDIT: Are you using XP Media Center???

No, there's no emblem on it. I bought it July 2005, probably before Bluetooth was really available. I'll try another cable tonight. Also, when I go visit my mom this weekend, I'll try installing MPT on her computer (it's a desktop) and see what happens. I don't have any other programs running while trying to use MPT either. Thanks, and once I try all that, I'll let you know if I have any problems. Thanks for your help!

I am using a laptop as well and have the USB ports built in. I am also able to charge my phone via USB but I installed MSU prior to MPT and now neither of them work. I have attached a screenshot of the error that I am getting and my device manager. I noticed that it is showing as a conexant modem if I allow the hardware wizard to auto find drivers.

Try uninstalling MSU. And then see if it clears things up. MSU shouldnt be needed, since MPT has the drivers. Once gone, plug it in and check if it is listed as Moto USB modem.

Everytime I plug my phone in, the Found New Hardware wizard comes up. What should I do about this?

Already tried that. Got the same error. I did manage to get it to list as Moto USB modem but it errored out. Went into device manager and updated the driver manually..pointing to C:\Program Files\Motorola Phone Tools\Inf\W2K_XP_USB_Drivers. It actually looked like it was going to work then errored out stating "the device could not be started (code 10)". Unplugged the phone and plugged it back in and got the wizard telling me that my hardware was not installed properly...basically the same screenshot I sent earlier minus the conexant modem (now shows moto usb with an error).

Thanks for your help everyone. I finally got my phone to be read by MPT. I really appreciate it. CDC...if you are still getting that "Found New Hardware" screen and it says it cannot be found, I figured out how to fix that. That's all I needed to do to get my phone to work.

    Thanks!

When the New Hardware Wizard appears, click install from a list of specific location (Advanced), then click Next. Uncheck the box for Search removable media. Then click Browse. Browse to this location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Motorola Shared\MotPCSDrivers. Then click next, and that should work.

Oh...well, I already tried that. The problem that I am having is that it finds the driver..begins to isntall. Then throws an error and says it could not be installed do to a fatal error.

Thanks for the suggestion though. :)

Then that tells me on your laptop you could possibly be having a port conflict on one of your USB ports.

For instance if you have webcam you plug into it from time to time Windows associates a specific port for the USB connection and it never releases it since it makes it dedicated to be used only by that webcam device. This is just a hypothetical instance. I have seen that happen before and to resolve it you would have to uninstall some programs that are associated to different USB devices you use.

So question now is are there other USB devices you use for your laptop that has software installed on the OS for it?

Ok guys, please, I'm in deep, I need your advice. I seem edited my phone, correctly with that 6a bit bluetooth thing obex enabled. That's the only bit i edited, i save a backup, my problem is, now when i connect via usb cable to my computer (directly, not through a hub) it auto detects my phone as a "Motorola V3c" and I can't get it to connect with MPT cause it's flagged with a yellow exclamation mark on my device manager.

wierd thing is, I CAN connect my phone with blutooth, but the multimedia icon isn't there on MPT.

so is there another driver i need? or something i need to do differently? I have the latest version of MPT as well. and uninstalled the pone software updat ver. 1.8 or somethin and still get nothin from my usb, suggestions anyone? any help is much appreciated =) thanks for the help and time.

John, the v3c is OK. Thats what it probably was before. But anyways, make sure u are using a usb port on the BACK of your computer, and not one in the front. Lastly, make sure u are using drivertool4.21a (attached). You also need to do the OTHER seem edit to change your phone from v3m to v3mm in order to get teh MultiMedia icon to show up in MPT.

If that doesnt wor, try connecting your phone with it powered OFF, but still on the back of ur comp.

thanks I'm trying that now, Windows is detecting it as a "Motorola V3c" instead of what i thought supposed to be "Motorola USB Modem". Also, I'm using motorola software update version C01.08.07 not sure if that matters though, we'll see if i can get my seem editor to recognize the phone again, or i may have to trade it in...again =)

EDIT: Perfect, thanks man, turning off my phone and connecting it worked to load it up with my seem editor, life saver.

    Cincyball,
Can you give me a tip, i'm doing something wrong. I my phone connected as a modem, but I dont think I have the drivers for Motorola Accessory, MCU Data Logger and Test Command. So I get connect but when I try to run PST it disconnects right away.
    Thanks

When u install PST or MSU, those drivers are installed on your machine. When u open the program and then connect the phone, they should automatically be installed. If the install hardware window opens, just let windows automatically choose. Make sure u are using a usb port on the rear of the comp. And also make sure u dont have any other programs open. MPT, BitPim are designed to use one set of drivers. MSU, PST, P2K are designed to use a different set.

wow, that is pretty strange. who do u have? sprint? if u have anyone BUT sprint, i wouldnt worry about updating to 4.36. anything over 4.21a will work with everything but sprint.

u can try going to start menu, motorola phone tools, live update, but my guess is it wont update for ya.

let me know who u are with, and then we can determine your next move.

Odd. A guy I work with has Sprint. I installed my version of MPT on his comp, and it went from 4.04->4.21a->4.36 with no problems. Where did you get your MPT from?
