Since this device came out last year, I believe there is no point in doing a detailed review of it now, so here are just some observations.

I have the 16 gb in white, the 16 in black or white is the only ones that the stores have, the 32 and other colors are direct orders from Motorola.

First impression - 4.7" is not that big, and with the contour back and rounded sides it is very comfortable in the hand. The build quality is excellent as well and it was a pleasure to see the "assembled in USA" sign on the box.

This is almost a pure Android with some mostly useful, Motorola software added, Of these I am definitely addicted to the Active Display. It is quite unique and useful at the same time. I haven't tried the full touchless control but there are good reviews for it.

The scrolling is smooth and fast and web pages open quickly, email etc was easy to set up. Interestingly the Hangouts app can incorporate the SMS/MMS messaging similar to iMessage.

There is a lot of new features that have come about in the last 2 years so I have some learning to do here.

I haven't tried the camera but heard it was good and better yet with the Kitkat update.

The phone has the shape that I prefer and much as I hated to put it in a case, I did get this Bear Motion slim back case in blue for. It is a very nice blue and quite low profile.

The only feature I don't care for is how Google is pushing Google+ into everything and now there is no way to look up the contact details from the phone app. I have to get used to it.

I do know there are other Moto X owners on this forum, so please join in and add to this thread. :)

The Moto X is a nice feeling phone. I just tried it out again in Best Buy today, trying to get the feel of the 4.7" size. I could reach all the corners fine with my thumb. That surprised me. Actually the Moto X is the same width as my iPhone 5S with my bumper case on.

The actual screen size is not much larger than my iPhone 5S, so I guess that is why I could handle it well. I compared my iPhone side by side to the Moto X. Actually the difference in screen Width and Height is very, very small. It seemed to me to be only 1/2". So doing some math based on the same 16:9 ratio and using a 4" and 4.7" model, the actual calculated difference between 4.7" and 4.0" is only:

    Height 0.61 Inches
    Width 0.34 Inches

In the store, the screen difference seems even smaller than my calculation. I didn't have a ruler though.

My thumb length is a good size, so accommodating this is not hard. It is also not much screen difference. Seems like a lot of discussion over not much. So I'm rethinking about the 4.7" iPhone 6, based on this. Or I can stay with the 4"

I was also curious about your review, since a close friend purchased a Moto X. I would have preferred she bought a iPhone, so we could iMessage and FaceTime, etc. But it seems she made a good choice. Actually she likes all the Google things, and being so tied to Google she went Android. The same reason I stay with Apple I guess. :)

Thanks for the mini Moto review. Been waiting for it. I don't think this is too OT.

I don't care much for the integration with G+ either but I've learned to live with it. Turns out I lied about the contact details though: once you're in all contacts in the phone app, click the person's icon.

Disclaimer: found just now totally by accident.

Thanks vf, BTW Hangouts works very well from iOS , that could be an option for you and your friend to communicate with.

It also works for me in the favorites screen, just make sure it's the small icon in the list that has a name next to it.

    Some more observations:

The battery life seems to be on par with my iPhone, maybe a tad better. I took it off the charger around 6:00 PM last night and just (7:30 PM) plugged it in at 15% battery left. Considering I am still playing with it a lot I expect it to get better.

The battery charges quite quickly, in 2 hours or less.

I knew that I cannot buy a book with the Kindle app on iOS only download a sampler, however I just realized That I can buy with the Kindle app on Android/Moto X. Am I correct on this, if so what is the reason?

Because Apple won't allow it is my guess. Just like you can't buy iBooks or music through iTunes on non-Apple devices (the lack of Apple apps for Android plays into that too of course).

You can buy books or music from Amazon through Safari on iOS.

Congrats Charlyee! Being a big Motorola fan, I've had my eye on the X since it came out. The problem for me was they only released it in the US at first, and I don't think the US version has the same LTE bands as needed for EU.
I saw they just released the X this year for EU (with EU LTE bands), however it's only available in black and white, and the EU version is actually made in China :/ So that kind of took some of the wind out of my sails, but I still may go for one anyway.
I also saw on some "rumor" websites that the next generation (x+1?) is coming out soon.

Until 2011 you could buy kindle books from the app. Then Apple imposed 30% of all digital media sold within apps. So kindle changed the app. You can buy easily from safari as AnthroMatt said. And you can buy everything else from the amazon app, like TVs etc. Just not digital media. It is amazon preventing that. But for good reasons.

In the end it's not a big deal.

Thanks Vf, think I vaguely recall that.

No it is not a big deal, just a pleasant surprise when I could buy the sample I was reading on Kindle app In the Moto X, without leaving the app and having to go another.
Thanks RR I am very happy with it so far.

Yes I am hearing the "x+1* rumors as well. I am not sure that with Motorola sold off to Lenevo, are the phones for the US market still going to be assembled here.

That was one of the factors for my getting this now, just in case this is the last model to be "Made in the USA".

I think "Made in the USA" is overblown. Aren't Lenovo laptops very highly regarded? No reason to think their flagship phones wouldn't be the same.

I haven't looked...are all the parts for the X made in the USA as well? Or is it just assembled here?

Agreed but that wasn't my point :p.

I wanted to see the assembled in USA writing on the box, not sure when, if ever I saw that for a cellphone.

It says Assembled in USA, accessories made in China.

My phone on the back says designed in California and assembled in China. Although the Corning glass is made in the USA as are the A7 processor chips and a few other parts.

Thinkpad laptops were very highly regarded until IBM sold them to Lenovo. I haven't heard a single good thing about a Lenovo Thinkpad since then and I definitely hated the one I had.

Mostly just assembled. Except for the glass being made in the USA, like Apple. But I think a subassembly is made elsewhere and that sub is put into a phone. Moto, like Apple, doesn't cut glass, nor does Corning.

I believe I had a medium to a medium high usage this charge cycle. There was still some playing around involved.

I took the phone off the charger at around 10:30 pm last night, played with it for half an hour or so and turned it off.

Turned it back on at 6:00 am, and now after 12 hours, it's at 49â„…. :)

I think that is great battery life and I am happy.

The first thing I became attached to is the active notification system too. I also like being able to pull the phone out of my pocket and just look at it to see the time of day. It knows you moved it and lights up the display. If you're a user of Google services, Google Now is impressive. It learns from your email, searches, and often knows what you want before you look for it. You can see it by swiping up on the home button. If you install the Google Now launcher (you have to side load it), a swipe to the right on the home screen will display it. If you searched for an address in Google Maps in your PC browser, it will soon appear in Google Now on your phone with travel time and a button to tap for navigation.

I am not crazy about using Hangouts for SMS so I use EvolveSMS for messaging--there are quite a few choices for messaging. If you've used an iPhone for a while you're probably not used to the ability to replace apps like messaging and keyboard, and using them as default app replacements.

This phone does not have the most impressive specs but it does perform nicely. As mentioned, it's quite responsive overall and the size is about as large as I would go. It's comfortable to hold, I guess due to the curves on the back. I got this phone the day is was available and haven't considered using a different one since. My Nexus 5 has a larger screen and is faster all around, but I prefer the X. I even bought one on sale just to have a spare in case something happened to it. I also prefer the look of the OLED screen to the LCD panel on the Nexus. The blacks are deep and true, and colors appear more vibrant. I think you'll like this phone.

I've been buying Lenovo laptops for years and had good luck with them.

I believe Lenovo has a good share of the non-US Android phone market. They certainly have the ability to produce a quality phone, I just hope they do it.

Either you're lucky or Cisco gets their Lenovo Thinkpads from some left-over stock nobody would buy. All my post-IBM experience has been while at Cisco.

Experiment with the "recticle." I think it's a pretty good camera. If you drag the recticle around it will set the focus and exposure. Drag it to a darker part of your subject and it will let more light in. Drag it to a lighter area and it will let less light in. Hold your finger down to take several shots in succession.

Not sure what Cicso does. :/ I know corporate PC images can render a PC crippled when loaded, my employer does that too. Most of my experience with Lenovo has been purchases for personal use. I do like my MacBook but Lenovo laptops have been OK too.

That's true, the corporate PC image at Cisco was horrendous, but it's the same image Mac-wielding people were running in the VM and they were generally more happy than when they had the Thinkpads.

Naw. I'll just confine them to plain SMS until they see the errors of their way and get an iPhone like the rest of our mutual friends. ;)

Thanks very much for your input and your tips. I will try recticle soon, appreciate your help.

Well my transition is complete and hubby is now the (reluctant) owner of an unlocked 32 gb iPhone 5 complete with the old Nokia ringtone from the 6132 via Asha 311.

A couple of things I wish was better are the placement and size of the on/off button - too flush, and the awkward screenshot procedure.

I will get used to both in time I am sure.

I also don't much care for the boot animation, it's too weird. :D

A gorgeous Spring Day, so here are my first pictures taken with the Moto X.

The first is through a glass door and the two outside are the subtle signs of Spring.

Yes, you'll get used to the button. I don't use it much. Active Display helps unlock and I use Power Toggles with a widget to lock it.

The boot animation has been changed a few times. I guess it will go back to the standard one soon.
