WASHINGTON - Ever been at a Metro station and had to make an important call but your cell phone won't work? That will soon change.

By October, cell phone service from major carriers - AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint - will work in 20 stations with the highest volume of traffic.

Verizon has been operating in some of the stations already.

    Those stations are:

    Crystal City
    Columbia Heights
    Dupont Circle
    Farragut West
    Farragut North
    Federal Triangle
    Foggy Bottom-GWU
    Friendship Heights
    Gallery Pl-Chinatown
    Judiciary Square
    L'Enfant Plaza
    McPherson Square
    Metro Center
    Pentagon City
    Union Station
Metro Board Member Chris Zimmerman says by next year, the service will be available in all stations.

By 2012, the service will be available everywhere in the underground Metro system.
