I picked up my new Verizon Silver 64GB iPhone 5S last week and have it running on AT&T's network. I have been reading many conflicting posts on other forums as to whether or not the Verizon 5S was really unlocked or not, including a blog where a guy tried to activate with a AT&T sim and could not get it to work. However Apples website lists it's compatibility with the LTE network frequencies here and since I was paying full retail anyway, I decided it was better to get the Verizon 5S which should work on AT&T and T-Mobile as well.... When I got it home, I moved the AT&T sim from my iPhone 5 to my Verizon iPhone 5S and it only showed a few dots with the LTE logo. However, after going through the activation process it then displayed the AT&T symbol as well as LTE. It has been working great on AT&T's LTE and 4G network as seen in my speed test screenshots below. I'm sure it will work with my secondary T-Mobile prepaid service as well when I can get a Nano T-Mobile SIM card..... For all those paying full retail for the 5S for use in the US, I would recommend looking at the Verizon model first, since it is already unlocked right out of the box for CDMA and GSM networks.... Reception on the iPhone 5S on AT&T in the North East has been great so far. There hasn't been an area yet that I've gone to without some LTE coverage. Here are some pictures of my Verizon 5S on AT&T's network along with a LTE and a 4G speed test: This is a screenshot showing that both Voice and Data work together on AT&T with Verizon's iPhone 5S Review continued below. The Pictures on the iPhone 5S are absolutely wonderful thanks to the updated camera and features. These are just a few of the pictures that I have taken with my 5S so far. Sent from my iPad Mini using Tapatalk Pro
From what I've heard, full price nets you an unlocked AT&T phone as well, at least when bought from Apple.
Battery life on my 5S on a full charge gives me 10 to 12.5 hours of usage and over 1 day of standby time. These are 2 screenshots showing my usage times that include emails, web browsing, Tapatalk app, messaging, picture taking, calls, music, and watching a few YouTube videos. I have come to determine after using the Verizon iPhone 5S on AT&T that I definitely made the right choice to get this model. There have been no issues with it at all and I don't expect that there will be. For anyone that has the iPhone 5 now and is thinking about getting the 5S, I don't think you'll regret it. The 5S is a great upgrade from my iPhone 5 that I had for one year. Sent from my iPad Mini using Tapatalk Pro
Yes, however, even though the Unlocked AT&T model is capable of working on Verizon's network. Verizon will not activate it, therefore I think purchasing the Verizon unlocked 5S is the better option for use here in the US at least. This way, if I ever decide to switch to them in the future I will not have to buy another 5S. Sent from my iPad Mini using Tapatalk Pro
Nice review IrishRose. I don't know when my wife's 5S will get here. I ordered the champagne a few days after launch and then she wanted to change it to silver last week! Says shipping in October. AT&T. I see that the 5 S models have the same LTE bands; last year the 5 has different bands between models. So maybe the Verizon idea is a good one. Congratulations on your new 5s. I am glad you like it and that it works on At&T. Thanks for you review covering all the important points. I have only had my 5 for 7 months and 29 days (but who is counting lol), so I think I will wait for the 6 perhaps. It's good to know that 5s is a great device if I change my mind in the future. Thanks much and enjoy the 5s.
Here, let me rephrase that for you. It's good to know that 5s is a great device when I change my mind in the future.
I have heard from a reliable source that the "S" line is the one to be on (for those who only get a new one every two years).
No, I mean that those who buy a new iPhone every two years are better off staying with the "S" line. So instead of 3G, 4, 5, 6 to be buying 3GS, 4S, 5S, 6S. Obviously those buying a new one every year need not concern themselves. 5$ line must be some sort of lanyard I'm not familiar with, although from the price it doesn't sound like it's made by Apple
I got what you meant. Just joking that the S stands for dollar sign. Personally I disagree. I could not have waited for the 5S and waited a full year without the 5 Sent from my iPad mini using Tapatalk Pro
Since they're priced the same I didn't get the joke And you still have me confused as I fail to see the disagreement when you word it like that.
I actually heard that before I got my 5 and went in with every intention of buying the 4s, but the lack of LTE made the decision to get the 5, a no brainier. I still like the physical shape of the 4s over the 5 and if I did get the 4s then I would have got the 5s now and be on the recommended "S" schedule Sorry vf not sure what you mean, you and I and many others with the 5 are skipping the 5s I am confused by this as well. Do you mean you could not have skipped the 5 to wait for the 5s? I am not sure about the logic behind getting the s models, with my limited knowledge of iOS, I thought the number changes were major upgrades. The 4 brought in HSPA and the 5 LTE for example. IR, sorry about taking your thread off topic.
Charlyee, Yep, I made a typo in one quote. I meant to say for those that cannot skip any of them. The ONLY reasons that I'm not getting the 5S this year are 1) ATT is not letting me upgrade until 2014...and this time I don't wish to sell my 5. I want to keep it for iOS app development. 2) Since my wife is getting the 5S, I get to play with that one. I like the 5 shape and size better than the 4 series. But they were the best of the lot back then. Reason I was so sloppy (do I need an excuse?) in typing, was that I was in the middle of changing over my MacBook Pro drive from 250 to 500 Gb. It was full to within 200 Mb. Purchased an Hitachi 500 Gb from OWC. After formatting, I used my Time Machine back up to restore the new HD. Worked perfectly and brought the MacBook Pro to exactly where it was, down to the placement of icon on the screen. I strongly recommend making a USB startup stick for Mountain Lion...so that you can boot from it (cmd-R) if you have a blank or damaged drive. Sry IR...back to your thread!
Not sure what you meant by "waiting for it to post". But after using the 5S since launch day, I can tell ya, it's not just a good one. The 5S is awesome! - - - Updated - - - I know I initially made this post about using my Verizon 5S with AT&T, but in case anyone is wondering, it also works great with my T-Mobile prepaid SIM card as well. I still primarily use it with AT&T, though.
Funny thing is that when I first activated my 5S I remember thinking whether or not I made the right choice to sell my 5 so quickly because I wasn't seeing it as that big of an update over my 5, other than a slightly faster processor, updated camera specs and the added security that comes from the FP scanner. After a day or so I came to love my 5S and had no regrets getting it even if I did pay full retail for it. Sent from my iPhone 5S.
Re: AT&T Launches Lower-Cost Mobile Share Value Plans for Families Btw is it me or does it appear that some fonts or layouts seem different on the 5S compared to the 5? Haven't done a side by side. Just the behavior seems slightly different in some parts. Sent from my iPhone 5S using Tapatalk Pro
Re: AT&T Launches Lower-Cost Mobile Share Value Plans for Families I seem to notice that the status bar (signal, battery %) font size/thickness can change from time to time. I am not sure that I noticed this before...but that doesn't mean it wasn't that way on the 5. What have you noticed?
Re: AT&T Launches Lower-Cost Mobile Share Value Plans for Families Idk, I can't say that I've noticed any difference, but that's just me. Sent from my iPad Air
Re: AT&T Launches Lower-Cost Mobile Share Value Plans for Families I'm going to pay ore attention. Some things just pop up as different. Sent from my iPhone 5S using Tapatalk Pro
