http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=560473. Now you do realize if it wasn't such a rave review I would have never posted it .
Thanks for the link Charylee, I do agree the number keys could have been either a brighter silver or other color, but other then that the more I see & hear about it, the more I am thinking about getting one. That is the day I decide to migrate over.
I am waiting for you to get one also, so you can help me mess up (I mean fine tune) mine. The lack of contrast in the keys is a problem initially but you get used to the layout quickly. The battery life is probably the biggest drawback with the Blackjack & the lack of voice dialing over BT. I believe they are now being shipped with the extended battery which makes the phone a little thicker but doubles the battery life. Mine came with two batteries and I like having a fully charged one always available. I read on your post to my OLAM thread that you don't have a data plan, this phone is meant for data. I clocked it this morning: communication: 1.2 megabits/sec Storage: 149.5 kilobytes/sec 1MB file download: 6.9 secs. Subjective rating: good These are results on EDGE not 3G, so you are going to be hard pressed to not use the data part of the device. I hope you do get it, seems like I have a history of owning a device that no one has or wants to discuss.
Nice numbers. The one thing that deters me is the Voce Dial over BT, I some what gave up my BB 8700c becuase of that ( I miss the full querty Keyboard and the larger sceen). As to the keys, I think this is an issue with ever device, like me now with the pearl I still have to look a bit more here and there as I tend to foget what I am doing and think that I am using my 8700. But if history speaks for itself should only be a day or two to get used to it.
It's good they are offering the extended battery now, I am like you & always need a good charged phone & usually keep a spare battery with me. I needed it the other night at a fire scene & glad I had it. As for needing the Data plan, yeah I know I would have to spend more money with them for it, and that is a deterent as well, but hopefully when I have to migrate over the plans may get a little cheaper or we will get our raise's. As for a history of owning phones other don't want or have, You are more adventurous then some of us and it's very helpful to see your feedback on some future toys for the rest of us.
Something tells me it's not that big of a deal with Nokia 6800, 6820, 6822 & E70. The biggest problem of E70 (IMHO) is that it's only tri-band GSM and single-band WCDMA.
i have to agree with fire, you pave the way for some of us. i know ill be getting the bj sooner or later, and im just waiting on charlyee to convince me that i cait do with out it, another minnett.:loony:
Thank you that for putting that in the "politically correct" wording. I believe the actual word is closer to stupid than adventurous.. The units that are being shipped with the extended battery only come with one, so in a way I am glad I have two standard batteries instead. I can easily go 24 hrs. on one charge cycle. I was more thinking that hf1khal meant the devices like the Blackjack & the Pearl which have the QWERTY keyboard visible on the top instead of the fold out keyboard for the Nokia series which would have more space resulting in a better layout. WG, you absolutely do not need anyone to convince you to buy a new phone. You have 2 3G phones and there is no 3G in your area now or in the near future? So how many phones do you have now?
as an ole boy scout, the motto be prepared comes to mind.:loony: and i have so many, i cait remember where they all are. seriously im looking for my first cell phone, it was with southwestern bell moblity, a analog moto, grey, in like new condition. oh and it was a flip phone, cost me a penny. they had a great promo, going on at jackie cooper.:loony:
The Nokia E61/E62 has done pretty well with a very radically different coloring of the number keys, although probably not anywhere near the ease of a full foldout one.
Yes, I like the coloring on the E61/E62. As you have noticed on your friend's phone the numerical keys on the Blackjack are not all together like the E61/62 but seprated by a column. Although hitting a numerical key or the alpha key just to the right of it is the same number. I don't know if this is good or bad, it is just very different than the other QWERTY keyboards I have used.
It certainly takes some getting used to -- I literally had to look up every number before I pressed it when I was entering that code you gave me
I went to pick up the blackjack and my friend refused to sell it to me. No matter what he asked that I wait a week or two. In any manner going to your original (other thread) it seems that Cingular adjusted their system to have Blackjack qualify for the Mediamax and there should be no charges for media net and one no longer needs the PDA package, which is good and that means that Cingular got their act together. But he said that the same will not work for the E62 which by the way has a very slow UI and many recomended going witht eh E61 software on it instead. I jsut don't understand why Cingular just shut of the Wifi on it and I do understand why they decided not to have it as 3G as Nokia did not have the US 3G in it and just blocked the int'l one.
Thanks for verifying that the MediaMax package is acceptable with the Blackjack... Why does your friend want you to wait a week or two, a possible price reduction maybe? It has been at the same price since it first came out, so maybe one is coming? What is your friend's opinion about the Blackjack, all good I hope?
Well since he used it for a few weeks (he is the store manager) and she knows what I require he said no for that. He actualy advised me to go for 8525 instead as it will serve me better because of my travel and to also wait as the new Blackberry 8800 is to be released by end of month. He did say a lot of good things about it but he thinks for my use I would be wasting my money on it.
Oh ok thanks, I misunderstood your post, I though he wanted you to wait 2 weeks before getting the Blackjack, so I was thinking of maybe a price reduction. Ofcourse you have to go with what works for you, so good luck with your choice but please let us know what you get.
I know a guy with an E62 and he said E61 software is more than likely going to brick the E62 (we have spent a lovely two hours reviving his phone after he flashed it with Chinese E62 firmware and tried to go back to unbranded US). The hardware is very different (E62 is at least two chips short -- my guess is there go your WiFi and 3G).
Nice review Charlyee, thanks for sharing and I am glad you are still smitten over your crappy Samsung I mean Blackjack. :lmao:
Thanks Joe, and yes I am still "smitten" with my crappy Samsung I mean Blackjack. I hope you will be be as smitten and more with your crappy Samsung, I mean Sync.......
Charlyee, Have you ever had a PDA/Smartphone with a touchscreen? I loved the Motorola Q when I first got it because it was pretty darn cool, but the lack of a touchscreen/stylus sort of lessened my enthusiasm for it. I still love the phone, but it's missing the one thing that, for me, would make it ideal. I just got the T-Mobile MDA and wondered how I ever lived without a touchscreen PDA phone. I feel like I've died and gone to mobile heaven..:googlyeye I've heard good things about the BlackJack, but because it's a Samsung, that nixes it for me, plus I've grown to dislike Windows Mobile 5, though I can see that you love it. Go fig???
Hey Mike, let's see I have had the IPAQ 2215, HX 2415, in the PDA line both with WM 2003. I have had the SX66, QTEK 9100, & the 8125 in the PDA/Phone line. Before I went to the IPAQs I had a series of Palm products. All with touch screen ofcourse. I like one handed operation and with the touchscreen approach I can not do that with out "touching screen" with my fingers and I absolutely hate doing that. I used to spend more time cleaning my screen (with a screen protector on, mind you) than I did using it. Also I like my devices to be small and invariably the PDA/Phones are much larger than the Smartphones. Well we have had a few devices that we both liked, the 6682, and the 6131 come to mind, so we did have much in common. So I guess it's time to part our ways?......:crying:
No need for ways to be parted... I know what you mean about cleaning the screen. I guess the functionality of the touchscreen works better for me than simple d-pad navigation. I probably haven't learned enough of what the Moto Q's true functionality could be. The same goes for WM5. It, for some reason, seems more complicated to do certain task than on the Windows Pocked PC version on my MDA. The Q is my first PDA, so I'm pretty new to this arena. Such is the life for the mobile phone addict I am...:loony: :browani:
Now, Now I do think it's adventurous & your defenetly not stupid, personally I wish I could afford to buy toys like you do (I am jealous if you didn't figure it out yet ). So they are coming with the extended battery only? Guess it would make sense if I were to spring for the phone I would get a spare one as well. I know I need to find a spare for my Nextel, I get 10-14 hours and it goes down hard. Either that or a car charger, but it's kind of hard to go into a building attached to the car adaptor, the cords aren't long enough.
Oh good I was worried about loosing you . I know exactly what you mean, I flip flop between WM5 and S60, and in reality I do like S60 much better. Having struggled with WM5 PDA/Phones for a year I think I have learnt the hang of or atleast enough to not want to throw it at a wall anymore. Like you said such is the life for the mobile addict that we all are: Thank you are too kind. As far as I know they are now selling/shipping with one extended battery and the cover for it, someone on HoFo claims they got one extended battery and one standard battery with it. Btw wirles just got one yesterday, and he will have more up to date information. And all this time I thought you could drive your car right inside a burning building with your phone still attached to the car adapter...
