so the Nextel board gets basically next to no traffic anymore and QChat is finally being released tomorrow.......would now be a good time to merge the boards??

At this point probably not, because there's talk of spinning Nextel off of Sprint.

im one of those guys that likes when things are simple and consolidated.......i prefer all these companies to be separate to create good competition but if they have to merge i think it should be quick and "painless"

Yeah, the Sprextel merger went horroribly wrong. Sprint took Nextel, which if I remember correctly was the most profitable carrier in the US at the time of the merger, and ran it into the ground. They should have invested in getting a CDMA PTT solution that worked well, and then migrated all Nextel customers over to the CDMA side. If they had that PTT solution within a year of the merger then they could have most of their customers on the CDMA network by now, and start working on getting the remaining iDEN customers migrated over so they could shut the network down, and save a lot of money.

You don't really believe this was all Sprint's fault do you? Nextel was a sinking ship when Sprint bought them and Sprint wasn't aware of the troubles ahead. They had oversold the Boost Mobile system and their technology was showing signs of unreliability and this all started to come crashing down right after Sprint bought them. This would have happened whether Sprint bought them or not and Nextel knew they had to do something fast. It was just a coincidence that it happened after the Sprint merger.

Anyway this is off topic and we can discuss this in a different thread.

I think the two should be conmined. Espcecially now that Sprint is allwoing CDMA and iden to share minutes on the same plans now. I think the firther integrtion of iden into CDMA prettty much out to rest any ideas that Sprint and Nextel might "un-merge."

Sprint is not going to spin off Nextel. I just don't see that happening. I would vote in favor of merging the boards.

If Sprint spun off any Nextel-related assets, it would be so different than the previous and/or current version that it would deserve an all new board anyways. I would expect Sprint to do something similar to ClearWire--spin off the Nextel spectrum and cell sites into or as some kind of public safety company that would also be involved in the 700 MHz stuff.

If all Sprint's plans had worked on time, all the Nextel customers would already be using qChat phones on the CDMA network, the 800 MHz spectrum would have been rebanded giving Sprint a nationwide PCS G license, and they'd already be looking for a buyer of the SMR spectrum and sites. From what I can see, they're in trouble because they're late, but they're still pushing forward with that same plan.

IMHO if the 2 forums were to be merged, it should have been done when the merger was done. If memory serves correct, they were kept separate at that time because Sprint was still operating them as 2 different companies. The forums were going to be merged when the merger was complete. This of course never happened, and now there is talk of Sprint possibly selling off Nextel. Since there is the possibility of Nextel being a completely separate entity again I would leave them separated. It is really easy to merge the forums, but not so easy to separate them again once merged. I say we keep them separate until such a time comes that Sprint actually completes the merger. At this point I feel it is very likely for Sprint to sell off Nextel and cut their losses. If they do this we will need to pick the Nextel stuff back out of the combined forum.

Jay is right about that....MUCH easier to merge vs. separate forums.
For that reason, I'm for a bit more wait and see...

Not so sure that will happen. Sprint has already built thousands of synergy cell sites where CDMA and IDEN equipment are both housed in the same bunker and on the same arrays on the towers. They also are using IDEN towers for their WiMax network. Sure they could still sell Nextel off but they would have to form some sort of tower sharing deal with the company who they sell them to. I feel this is unlikely to happen.

Sprint can retain ownership of the towers and lease it back to Nextel. That would make Sprint even more profitable.

In a way yes but I'm not sure if Sprint even owns the majority of their cell sites/towers or how that would work. But they could work out some deal like that.

Didn't Sprint sell all of the CDMA towers they owned a few years ago?

Very few carriers actually own the physical towers anymore, just too much liability. What Sprint has done is combined leases and utilized a lot of existing iDEN locations to install CDMA equipment under the same lease since all they are doing is swapping out an existing antenna which has generated an tremendous network boost and monthly expenditure savings.

For them to separate now, while possible, would certainly be a complex deal and more than likely end up being someone simply leasing out the entire network and Sprint retaining the physical ownership and agreements.

I would say not to merge them only because like where I live, Sprint and Nextel are two different companies. iPCS has won the right to keep Sprint from selling, owning, operating, and blah blah blah of the Nextel network here. There haven't been ANY Nextel site additions in forever in northern Michigan and also since it's iPCS here, they won't be going around adding CDMA to all of Nextel's iDEN sites.

If merging Nextel and Sprint brought Sprint to the ground, what do you think merging the forums will do to the Sprint forum? ;) (kidding)

Since I don't think Sprint will spinoff Nextel anyway, eventually the forums should merge. I believe it should be done when the time comes and we have no IDEN-only products being sold.

But I want to see the day when Sprint comes back "from the ground up" all over again. :) I agree with Larry that Nextel was a sinking ship and brought Sprint down with them.
