Hey and cheers to all. Quick query -- I'd really appreciate if anyone could give me some insight on this:

How's Cingular's coverage in Lynchburg/Madison Hts/Amherst, Virginia? Is that area still SunCom's 1900 network, or is there some 850 thrown in? Particularly interested in ZIP 24503, down by 501 and Boonsboro road -- the residential area around there, but the area in general as well. Plus, it seems there's a big black hole down Rt. 29 from Charlottesville?

    Thanks in advance!

Cingular's coverage is the old suncom network... coverage is fair around the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford... however along route 29 to cville is pretty bad.

One thing to keep in mind is that Central Virginia and GSM just don't mix... It's all CDMA. If you're visiting there for a bit, expect some spotty coverage... if you're planning on being there a while you might better look into switching to USCC or Alltel.

    Hope that helps out

Cingular is on a Crown owned tower in Boonsboro. As far as 29, you drop @ Arrowhead (5 miles south of Charlottesville) and are dead until Amherst. Alltel is working on covering that stretch now. They are about 75%. Nextel has 60% of it covered and Ntelos has all of it covered. This part of 29 goes through Albemarle and Nelson counties. They allow any new towers to be only 7' - 10' above the tree line. One carrier recently had to go before the board go get a 6" variance.

I'm moving to Lovingston, VA half way between Charlottesville and Lynchburg (on 29S) and was wondering if the situation was still the same. I've been using Alltel and had good reception in Lovingston and steadily improving reception on 29 with a few drop out spots. However, I'm so fed up with their customer service (both in store and nationally; expect to spend at least 2 hours getting warranty service for your phone and then they give you a refurbished phone that doesn't work requiring 3 more trips to the store; they promise to call you back, but don't, etc) that I'm contemplating switching, but don't know of a carrier with comparable Nelson County coverage. Any ideas?
