I now live in Washington DC but have kept my Verison Sacramento phone number and I'm on the national romaing plan. I need to get a new phone and am debating between the LG 4400 and the Samsung A530. Does anyone know if it makes a difference where I buy the phone in order to make sure I keep my phone number? And, technically speaking do I choose a phone that's better for the Sacramento region or the Washington DC metro area. So feedback please on 4400 vs a540 I've read here that some people buy phones through sources other than Verizon (eg. ebay, etc.). How does that work? Do you notify Verizon and then they activate, and what about the 1 or 2 year contracts? A few questions, a bit confused. Appreciate all input. Thanks, redgeorge
When you say "national roaming plan" do you mean National Single Rate or America's Choice? If you are on the NSR plan your choice is easy because Verizon will not allow you to use the a530 on that plan because it lacks analog. If you buy a phone off of eBay once you get it, just call customer service and give them the ESN and they will add the phone to your account. If you buy from eBay you don't need to worry about any contracts.
Well u buy it for where u r receiving service. A530 is all digital and 4400 has analog, thats basically what it comes down to a lot of the time between these two. i like the 4400's features, the b/w multi-colored backlight outer LCD(well the a530 is color) and it is very feature rich. I have not played with a a530.
I like both phones however I don't like the displays on the VX4400 especially in comparison with the A530. The A530 has a much brighter and more clear display. Also I think it's awesome that the Samsung comes with an extended life battery as well as regular life. ALSO... The LGVX4400 was my favorite phone until the current "fake" roaming out of market indicators on it... until the new software gets approved by VZW I've been backing away from it. The A530 has a perfect track record so far... they pulled the initial release to fix a minor problem but the phones were never sold (or were supposed to be.) That is the only exception. Bottom line: A530 smaller, better displays, and crystal clear sound quality (although the LG is too.) Both would be good choices, but if it were me I'd go for the A530.
How is the RF performance between the two, I am looking to upgrade, and I it is between those 2 phones.
Hi all. Thanks for the comments. Well the looks of the a530 seduced me. . .along with the positive thoughts posted here. I ordered it yesterday from Verizon and should have it by Wed. or Thurs. so will let you know. But I must admit, all the great feedback on the 4400 still has me wondering if that isn't a better phone. A couple of Verizon reps made a point of talking about the a530 being strictly digital, that it could be a drawback. When I first looked into this purchase I was told I couldn't get the a530 if I was still on the Single Rate National plan because the phone was only available on the America's Choice plan. But when I placed the order for the 4400 the rep informed me that Verizon had just recently made the a530 available on other plans so my dilemma continued for another day choosing between the two. Really what I want is a phone with superb sound, solid reception and connection and limited dropped calls. I kept checking CNET for a review on the a530, nothing yet. The 4400 got about a 93% favorable by users commenting. Very impressive. . .hope the a530 gets the same.
Let us know how you like the A530. I think that if it would have analog it would be the perfect phone. Well then maybe a camera would be nice! Jack
I'm with you. . .if the a530 was tri-mode it would be the perfect, and easy choice. For someone who has commitment issues this was a tough one. . .jumped into a 2 yr. contract after several years of being month to month. To their credit Verizon has the 15 day trial run guarantee. I'm going to Cape Cod this weekend, should have the phone all fired up by then, so will report back. Thanks. redgeorge
Redgeorge, I think either one is a great choice. I found myself on the verge of buying the VX4400 since Feb (not sure if that is a commitment issue or a cheap issue) and finally compared the A530 with it this last week. It's size drew me in as well. It has very similar feel to the VX4400. My Salesman here in PNW gave me the 'digital only' warning. Figured I'd take my chances. Only draw back to date is that both screens seem to wash out BIG TIME in bright sun. I don't recall my bros VX4400 doing that. Post On.
I had just heard about the high SAR ratings: 1.47 ear; 1.39 body. To be honest it concerns me, but I'm not sure what it really means. Is it a health issue? Is the rating based usage? Can it be equated to other exposures that are more meaningful such as... equal to x hours standing under high voltage lines? Hey B. Wayne, would you like a brand new A530? Post On.
That concerns me now too. How does that compare with the other color phones that are on the market though? (Sanyo, LG?!?!)
You might wanna go to a verizon store and get version 6. I did that and it no longer says "Roam:" instead of time.
The a530 screen looks nice, if not a bit washed-out. There is a button on the outside of the 4400 which turns on the outer display back light (10 seconds). I'm not certain if the 530 has that or not. Personally, I found the 530 outer display was very hard to see. As for SAR ratings. One of the reason for the delay in releasing the 530 was the Hiroshima-like SAR levels. 150+. I understand they were able to get the SAR level below 150 by taking the readings while the phone was off... If any of you begin to have memory lapses after using the 530, please post (if you remember). Oppie
lol thats not funny. Palita-YOu can check the ratings for each phone i believe at the carrier's website, at least for verizon. Then you can check whatever phone for yourself.
