Hi, Also posted on the Samsung forum...but which of the two are better; want a trimode (finally conceded I will have to live w/o external caller ID), clamshell for Verizon NJ/NY and Maine Thanks for any opinions on LG VX 3200 or Samsung A650!!!
Well, no CWick, not absolutely sure. The digital coverage maps look pretty good for the areas I frequent NY/NJ/Maine...but my research thus far indicates that trimode is a safer choice, particularly in rural areas (in my case, parts of MAine); I couldn't really get a clear answer on trimode vs digital, in my stumbling questions elswhere on these forums. I am still open to suggestions; will be switching to Verizon at end of the month; thanks
Everyone's phone use is different, but it has been my experinece over the past six years of using a digital phone, that I don't need analog. I travel a lot for work, and to make a long story short, I have never made an analog call. Even when I forced a phone into analog, when I had a very weak signal, the analog signal was just as weak and was not usable. So for me, I lost no sleep when I switched to a digital only phone.
I have the LG VX3200. I believe the 650 has more features than my 3200 but I really like my LG. This is my first LG phone and I am pretty much impressed with it. The VX3200 has good RF. Feels sturdy. It has all of the basic features that you really "need" in a phone. It does "not" have wap, games or Get it Now. You can however email ring tones and graphics to to yourself from Verizon's vtext.com web page for a small fee. I have done this and it worked great. Ringers are nice and loud. Call quality is clear. Speakerphone works pretty well. The phone has numerous alarms, scheduler, voice dialing ringer ID, picture ID, world clock, voice memo etc etc. Menu system is very easy to use. Screen is bright and clear. I really like the 3200 and my only complaint is that LG should have made the flasing green service light do more. When you miss a call or get a message they should have had the light start flashing red or something. LG phones also missed the boat on missed call reminders. It will alert you if you receive a voice mail, page or text message with a 2 minute reminder alert but You will never know if you missed a call if they dont leave a message. The only way to know is to check the screen when you come back. I liked the Motorola phones that would drive you nuts with a loud beep whenever you missed a call. I am very happy with my 3200. I downloaded the manual of the new VX7000 just released and many of the features are the same on my 3200 minus a couple of toys that I do not need. I have everything that is important to me on my 3200. The 650 looks like a very nice phone. I doubt you could go wrong with it, I chose the LG because I have heard so many good things about LG phones I just wanted to try one myself and see if I agree with all of the positive reviews they get. So far, I am an LG phone fan but not to say that I wouldnt have been just as happy with the 650. As far as not having an external screen, that is no big deal. I really dont think it will bother you. The only time that I sort of wish there was an external screen is when I am driving and the phone rings. Other than in the car, opening the phone is no big deal and ringer ID will let you know if you need to be so quick to answer the call anyway. I like having analog capability if I need it. There are still many rural areas of the U.S. that an analog phone is needed. Hope this helps some. I'm sure you will happy with either phone you choose.
Hi, I'm new to this forum and on the verge of making my first cell phone purchase. Like sylviecat, I'm trying to decide between the VX3200 and Samsung's a650 on the Verizon network. Tri-mode is not essential to me, but good reception certainly is. From the reviews I've seen (with much scavenging), both phones seem to come well recommended in this category, but what I haven't been able to find is a true comparison. I'm looking for something reliable with good reception (strong signal, minimal breakup and call-dropping), good voice quality, durability, and an easy-to-use interface. I've read that Samsung is a bit buggy (distinctive ringers getting mixed up when using more than one Get It Now source...not sure that would really be a problem for me, since I'm not likely to do much downloading). Is this indicative of poor quality? I've also read that LG phones have been known to pick up an echo. How true is this of the VX3200? Basically I'm looking for the phone which simply acts like a phone best, with the least frustrations. Any advice or personal experiences to impart? If other Verizon flip-phones meet my criteria, I'm still open to recommendations, but I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the VX3200 or a650 (with an eye on a670).
The "echo" problem can happen with any phone not just LGs, sometimes that's more of a network issue than the phone itself but yes some phones have been known to pick up the "echo" problem more... If i had to chose between the two i would go with the a670, i really like Samsung phones. Good luck and welcome to WA... a670 vs LG 3200
My parents have the 3200, my younger brother who's 16 has the 650. They get almost identical reception. The only real difference is the GIN on the 650. I personally have a little more difficulty opening the flip on the 650 than the 3200, but that's just nitpicking.
I have the a670 and find it's a solid phone. The reception is stable and the voice clarity is unbelievably clear!! The camera part is a fun perk, but I don't rely on it. I like the voice activated calling and the outer display. The perk I use the most is the customized phone rings and sending my phone additional rings to make it "my" phone.... I've also had cell service for 6-7 years...never once did I "need" the analog. My phones have always stayed in digital mode. With the rebate, I was able to get mine for free (and only had to wait 4 weeks for the rebates...not 8-12 as the ad said!)
Thanks for reviving this thread, people. It's nice to get some feedback. Fathead (may I call you Fathead?), do you know if your parents or brother have any complaints (or raves) about their respective phones? I got the chance during my lunch break today to play around with each of them at Radio Shack and a Verizon store. Both seem nice. I agree that the VX3200 is allows much easier one-handed opening. In fact, the only thing keeping me from snatching that one up is the lack of GIN. I don't imagine I'd really need it, but flipping through the (persuasive) brochure made me think, "Hey, maybe I WOULD like to check my email on a telephone," or "Maybe it WILL be useful somewhere down the line." Right now, I don't see myself paying for any of that, though. I guess I just don't want to get stuck feeling limited and left out... For any of you, how does each phone (VX3200 and a650, to recap) rate in terms of daily ease-of-use? From initial inspection, I somehow get the sense that the VX3200 might have a slight edge, though I'm not sure why. I'm hoping some of you regular users can illuminate me. Initially I was thinking I could try both of them out using Verizon's 15-day no-hassle trial period and then pick my favorite, but I was dismayed to hear from a Verizon rep that you can only switch out your phone once in that time. So if I wind up not liking my second choice, I'm kind of screwed. Hence the lengthy post here. Any help? By the way, if I purchase my phone and plan off of verizonwireless.com, do I still get the 15-day trial period? Or is that only an in-store deal? And does anyone know if Radioshack offers anything similar? I've noticed their prices are much cheaper.

There is no policy that says we can't swap a phone out more than once in a month, but the nice Radioshack guy probably won't like it as we are paid to activate the phones and not to do esn swaps. Just get some accesories and he'll probably be happy though.
Only problem is that with RS if you have a problem after the 30 days the phone is sent out for repair unlike Verizon they will swapped it out on the spot....
