I saw in today's Best Buy circular that they have the LG CE500 as an exclusive thru Best Buy.

And it looks like Samsung is coming out with some new phones for Cingular soon including a PTT version, see the news article from Samsung here on Phonescoop, it's down the page some for Wednesday.

I used to like LG phones but lately i think they're falling behind style wise, i guess with their GSM versions that's always been the case imo..

    Thanks for the update Fire14...

Christopher Price of PCSIntel.com reports that four new UMTS 3G phones are coming very soon for Cingular's lineup. They could be out as early as December, but as we all know, things usually get pushed back so I would place a safer bet on seeing these early next year.

Cool, the 1st quint band phone. I wouldn't have expected to see Nokia introduce the first UMTS 1900/2100 capable phone. I wonder how long it'll be until we see it here in Germany.

Re: New Cingular fonez coming soon!

I like the looks of the Samsung D357,(almost looks like a Moto V60) and being a PTT phone is nice, that's what they need to come out with is more then 2 phones for the release to get more interest in the service.
I do hope they release the PTT soon, I am real interested in seeing some reports on how well it works, in case it's something I would get if I ever migrate.

Thanks for the additional pictures and info bobolito, I like the looks of the future.

Re: New Cingular fonez coming soon!

Yep....it looks like Cingular is really building out a real wireless company this time. I think Cingular's phone lineup is definitely the best right now. And this is just the start! Besides phones, I hear several other surprises coming which many of you probably already heard of such as a new MediaNet interface, MobiRadio, AnswerTones, OLAM restrict, GPS, to name a few. :)

Wow... these phones really are tempting. Cingular has until July 2006 to become perfect so I can be confident about switching ;)

I wonder how T-Mobile will respond to the Cingular introduction of the 6282 and to their new lineup in general. There are several models (especially the 6282) which you can bet will also be carried by T-Mobile.

Ok so UMTS 850 does exist? Why, exactly? Are the two going to be distributed equally throughout the markets or differently and thus the phones need both bands...

agreed...they have about 74 version of the V60. Didn't they start using upper and lower case when they ran out of letters? V60Kc

Re: New Cingular fonez coming soon!

As always carriers will broadcast in the bands they are licensed to use. Just like GSM, TDMA, CDMA, etc. UMTS will be 850 where GSM is 850. At the same time, UMTS will be 1900 where GSM is 1900. And if GSM is both 850 and 1900 in your area, then UMTS will be both 850 and 1900 as well. So, yes your phone will need both 850 and 1900.

In the beginning, though, you might see UMTS in one band and then expand into the second band. But the plan is to have UMTS in both bands anywhere Cingular has license for both bands.

Re: New Cingular fonez coming soon!

but can UMTS work on 850Mhz?

i mean, european UMTS systems work on 2100Mhz, if im not mistaken, because the higher number of cycles per second make it better for high speed data transfer.

besides, wouldnt UMTS 850 and 1900 interfere with GSM in those bands?

Re: New Cingular fonez coming soon!

Why not? UMTS is just another add-on technology which will use existing GSM sites. UMTS in the US and Europe/Asia uses 1700-2025 Mhz (1885 Mhz-2025 Mhz) as the uplink frequencies. Europe and Asia have 2110-2200 Mhz as the downlink frequencies. The US downlink frequencies will be at 2100 Mhz but it's not available at the moment. So the FCC allocated 1910-1920 and 1995-2000 Mhz as the downlink frequencies in the former MSS (Mobile Satellite Service) slots.

    http://www.unstrung.com/document.asp?doc_id=59120

The real limitation is the amount of available spectrum in the US. In Europe and Asia, UMTS is more flexible since they don't need to share the 2100 Mhz band with GSM 900/1800.

UMTS will work on any frequency you put it on. You just have to clear out the space so that it doesn't interfere with GSM. For instance, UMTS 850 can be using a 10Mhz space of the 25Mhz total space allocated at 850Mhz. The remaining 15Mhz can be allocated for GSM. This way there is no interference.

Looks like it used to be reserved for a mobile telecommunications service which won't be used after all. It would be great if the FCC put some UMTS up there as well since for once the frequencies would be compatible with other parts of the world.

Great thread, I think the CE500 is great for people who want a solid phone with a few great features - the MP3 player is supposed to be sweet w/ skins and everything...

With 2 new GSM Razr models being released they might just discontinue it rather than lower the price.

Seems like a great phone. The only complaints I've heard are really minor and quite subjective such as the keys being flat against the phone making it a bit hard to dial without looking at it; or that the orange color doesn't appeal to them, or some complain that the phone doesn't have removable memory because 256MB is not enough for them! Go figure. My phone has the Transflash with 128MB and that's more than enough for me.

However, the REALLY IMPORTANT features seem like they work right, such as the sound level and quality, signal reception, the menu speed, software reliability/robustness, ease of use and battery life. They are all great.

Hopefully it's better than the s710a's signal reception and menu speed. The phone would randomly have 1 bar and just generally OK reception. The menu speed was awful though and is the reason I dumped the phone. Hopefully Sony improved these aspects on the w600. The 'handle' antenna may have already solved one.

Oh yes! The menu speed is awesome on the z520! It does get stuck sometimes when the phone is really busy, like when you are in a phone call and at the same time you try to go in the menus to do other things, it does get laggy, but if you wait it comes back to normal eventually. Just like a computer. It depends on what you're doing. But Web browsing is also very comfortably fast. The browser in Motorolas is just painfully slow.

But for the most part, the phone beats the Motorolas in all battery life, sound quality and menu speed by a large margin! The only problem is non-standard headset port, and you can't hack it to disable the poor quality Half Rate codec. Another problem I've found is that CSD is so difficult to get it working on the z520, but it does work sometimes. CSD is much more reliable in the Motorolas.
