Hi everyone! It's been a really long time! Hope all is doing well and i noticed some old timers are still around. :) Anyway, so i have tons of questions for ya'll. lol.. I just recently ordered a 3g iphone and well honestly i had one for a week when they came out awhile ago but didn't really like that it didn't have MMS. I use that alot being that i have alotta family. lol. Anyway, the one i just ordered has verison 3.1.3 on it and i was wondering if it has MMS now? Can you assign ringtones? I'm pretty sure you still can't put up your own wallpaper either huh? If i can still do all of this then i won't have my iphone jailbreaked. If the first 2 i mentioned is doable then the wallpaper isn't all that important and i wouldn't have to consider the jailbreak. Im kinda scared on that although i know could do alot more if i did. Well, let me know what ya'll think and if i should or shouldn't have it jailbreaked. Oh another thing, will i have to get it activated at ATT or can i do it myself with itunes? Thanks guys! :)

    Welcome back, lilprincess!

I believe anything above v3.0 has MMS. You should be able to assign ringtones to specific contacts and assign wallpaper to the stand-by screen (not the icon area). Now I'm saying this from my experience with the first iPhone, which was jailbroken and unlocked. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about these options being available.

Unless you JB/unlock, you will have to activate with AT&T, specifically through iTunes. If you do jailbreak it, remember its a warranty voider, so keep that in mind (in case you didn't already know ;)).

    Hope this helps!

Yes, the 3.1.3 gives you MMS. You can assign ringtones too. Is it a 3G or 3GS? The 3GS will allow you to take video's and share them as MMS; the 3G will only receive video MMS.

A free upgrade to OS 4.0 will be in June for both phones. The 3GS will add multitasking, but not the 3G. But you always have iPod multitasking and so on with both phones. OS 4.0 will also add wallpaper for both phones, beyond the home screen (Mobile Mike take note)

If they are new, ATT or Apple will activate them with iTunes in the store. If mail order, you will do it yourself via iTunes.

There is a new iPhone coming out in June btw. See the postings about the 4th Gen phone (not to be confused with the 4.0 OS software) in the Apple iPhone sections on WA.

Thanks so much guys! I didn't order the phone through ATT or Apple I got it from another wireless store. I went with the 3g cause one, it was cheaper and 2 for some reason alot of my friends didn't like the 3gs because they said battey life was bad and they preferred the 3g. If it'll have MMS and I can assign ringtones to contacts the home screen picture will be minor and I could deal with it. I'm trying not to have it jailbreaked because I don't want to void the warranty on it. Hmmm it does have a standard 1 year warranty with it right?

Assuming you are buying it from a legit store like Best Buy or so you will get the 1 year warranty. The 3GS battery life is a bit better and the 3GS is faster in many ways. But, true, the 8G 3G is much cheaper.

Other than those things i'd want on my iphone now knowing that it is possible to have without jailbreaking it, it's becoming more and more of a "no need" thing to do... Since i bought it from another store it's nice to know that i can activate it myself with itunes cause going to the ATT store is such a pain! lol .... Ok, so Mobile Mike said i can set my own pictures to the stand by screen but will it be easy to do? lol ... I wish my phone would get here already so i can play with it! :p

Hmm.. this may be a stupid quesion lol but i know i asked if the phone has MMS now and ya'll said yes but that means the phone is able send and receive MMS right not just receive? *blushes* Thanks again!

Setting wallpaper from your own pics is trivial.

Yes, you can send/receive MMS since OS 3.0, some time now. It works very well. Remember that the 3G can take/send/receive photos, audio, text, but only can receive video. The 3GS can do video taking/sending too.

Taking and sending video for me isn't as important as MMS with just pics, sound so forth because I hardly use that feature now and I have it on my BB. You said setting wallpaper with my own pictures is tricky how so? And will assigning the ringtones be as easy as it is now on a regular phone other than an Iphone? How bout assinging caller I.d. Pics, is that possible?

I see all the standard ringtones there to assign but i do not see the specific ones that i want, how do i get those? Grrr this is frustrating me! lol Why can't it be as easy as any other phone? Thanks guys! :)

Did you create a ringtone playlist or did you use the "Ringtones" folder under the "Library" section? This section could be missing by default. Go to preferences and check the box for "Ringtones" (Edit ->Preferences ->> "General" tab (1st one). "Ringtones" has a bell icon.

The only way to make a small part of a song a ringtone requires several things: 1) You can only create a ringtone from a song purchased from iTunes Store. 2) (On Windows iTunes) From the menu at the top, place cursor over "Store". There is an option to create a ringtone. When selected, it will bring up a bar at the bottom of the screen to pull a 15 second part of the song you wish to use. Follow the prompts. 3) You purchase the ringtone for $0.99...:(. It will then be located in the "Ringtones" folder and will be available for assignment to a contact.

Creating a folder and putting songs in it will not work for assigning ringtones. This is how it was for the first gen iPhone. Not sure if this has changed for the later versions. This is the only way I know of to put "personalized" ringtones on the iPhone.

I've gotten that message too on my iPod. Just re-authorize your computer with iTunes (from the menus at the top). Then you should be able to sync your phone with iTunes.

Thanks Mike i finally got it to work! Whew that was a headache! lol iTunes is such a rip off for being able to only get ringtones through them unless you wanna jailbreak your phone which i am trying to avoid. It's 1.29 for a song and THEN on top of that you have to pay an additional .99 to make it into a ringtone. That's ridiculous! Grrr.. but i guess i have to pay the price unless i jb it! Thanks again for all your help and im sure i'll have more questions as i try to do more stuff. lol :)

Oh, I completely agree. It is a ridiculous rip-off. Glad you got it working again. :)

You don't have to pay or jailbreak your phone to input your own ringtones. Google a bit and find that there are several free ways to accomplish this.

If you have a mac and use Garage Band (comes with OS) you can input any song, edit it, and use it for a ringtone.

If you have a PC (or even a mac) there are other ways too. The main correction is to change the file extension so that it is recognized by iTunes and the iPhone as a ringtone.

It is pretty simple. Good luck!

P.S. here you go, one of many google results to find on the web:
    http://www.trickyways.com/2009/09/how-to-create-iphone-ringtones-using-itunes/'

It works just fine. I took a song from iTunes and converted (didn't have to pay $0.99); and then another made my own song; and one from non- iTunes (didn't have to pay $ 1.29). Just be sure to trim the track to 30 seconds or less

P.P.S: If you have any DRM protected songs to use as ringtones, you need to burn them and rip them back into itunes first. Then you can use the method I gave above (which takes about 1 min to do).

Basically the same problem that I had to deal with when using Nokia's mp3 phone player with iTune protected DRM songs.

It is easily done with iTunes software. Or you can use software such as this to do it for you automatically.(How to Convert M4P to MP3 with TuneClone and iTunes 9?)

But those protections have gone away with iTunes now (meaning that all 4 recording companies agreed to remove the protection). So you are only left with your own moral/ethnical decisions on this one. Copyrights are still there, but it is in your hand alone now. :)

You certainly can think of things to do, that I never have a need for!

With MMS you can also send audio files (.m4a) from the recorder, etc. But since ringtone files, .m4r, can only be installed via iTunes, you might as well send the file via email from your computer to your friend's computer. You can certainly send to your iphone via email ( or via file transfer appls), and store them there, for sending via email to your friends, but it's an extra step.

The ringtones are copyright protected generally, so sending them from phone to phone is not possible, afaik.. I could never share my att purchased ringtones on my Nokia with another for the same reason. I also would lose them when I upgraded the phone. At least my iPhone took care of that with my upgrades.

To sum it up, one way or another, your friend will need to install the ringtone with iTunes anyways, so you will need to share/send the file to their computer eventually.

P.S. Time to change your profile from BB to iPhone. No more help until then. We need more iPhone users on these forums.

Well you can add me to one of the proud iPhone owners. I've been using my iPhone 3G for 3 weeks now, and I love it. So much so, that I will be getting the iPhone 4, as soon as I see what the reviews are like for it.…
